Theoretical situation: suppose Jarvis decided to do something a bit different: maybe a full album, maybe a mini album between bigger projects, what would you like him to do?
One of the above? Something else?

I love the way Jarvis's mind works regarding soundtrack/instrumental music. I could really go for an album of music like Fire Island, Roald Dahl, My Chopper etc. A kind of KES meets analogue synths approach, brilliant, just brilliant.
I like his two solo instrumentals loss adjuster excert one and pilchard. And I like his choice in instrumentals on the trip. So even though I love his voice and lyrics; yeah wouldn't mind hearing an instrumental CD.
Just remembered another idea I had in my brain storming session with myself: A Chocolate Layers album!
Since when were you a moderator?! You kept that quiet! I've been on this site properly for about 9 months and this is the first moderatory thing I've seen you do! Does that not mean you can contact Steve?

I'm listed on the front page. No need to moderate much around here. I delete the odd bit of spam, but people who post on here are all generally well behaved, so I'm hands off. I only volunteered as Steve asked many years ago and I was on the forum more often than not. Only way I can contact Steve is through PM.
Who mentioned contractual obligations? This is just a theoretical situation.
And I know The Loss Adjuster is a (really rather excellent) longer song (damn those yokels), but it was an instrumental track to us for a few months before the full song was released and it still sounds fantastic in it's own right.

You do ask awkward questions Fred! I think for me the evasive answer would have to be, anything that caught his interest, which seems to be pretty much what he does do anyway. It's that energy that comes from genuine engagement coupled with a divergent imagination that works really well. He does seem to function best musically with other people around, he seems to thrive on the interaction. So how about something a bit like the format of the All Seeing I "Pickled Eggs and Sherbet", where they got loads of different people in for a song or two and mixed it all up. The thought of him having to churn out anything for the sake of it to fulfill some obligation/contract whatever sounds a bit tense to me.
For something a bit different, I just saw this on Twitter about "In The Thick Of It":
"RT @mrchrisaddison: JarvisCocker guests in two episodes as Ewan Tucker, Malcolm's brother, though he's not in the musical episode itself."

He's a good storyteller in a lot of his songs, and I like the Inside Susan Quadrillogy? Tetralogy? Quartet? So it might be good to hear a story played out over a dozen songs.
The only examples I can think of are rap but I really like A Grand Don't Come For Free by The Streets, Defamation by Plan B and Undun by The Roots, so yeah, like the occasional album with a story.
Apparently Promenade by The Divine Comedy is a concept album but that never really came across to me.

Surely the greatest concept/story album is Histoire de Melody Nelson by Serge Gainsbourg, and astonishing piece of work. I'm also pretty sure that Jarvis likes that album so he was probably being slightly disingenuous when he said he hates concept albums
Not heard of that. I'll have to sound naive and ask... Is it in English? All the concept albums I've bought have been by people I'm already into, so I've never actively sought out a concept album. Jarvis has done Relaxed Muscle which is arguably a concept album of sorts. It sort of begs the question: what is a concept album? It can be a few different things: Magnetic fields did an album of songs starting with the letter I, listed the songs alphabetically, called it i. Pretty loose concept.

C'mon Dominic, now you're the one being disingenuous! Surely you've heard of Serge Gainsbourg? Histoire de Melody Nelson is his grand concept album about a young girl who he knocks over in his Rolls Royce falls in love with, has lots of sex with, she has to leave is in a plane crash and dies; all in French and within 30 minutes! I've always felt that the choral ending to Sunrise owes alot to Cargo Culte the final track on Histoire. The whole thing is outstandingly good and everyone must hear it if they haven't.

... or as Douglas Adams would have it, the increasingly inaccurately named trilogy
I have a cricket themed album album Neil Hannon made under the name of The Duckworth Lewis Method, very evocative, if you like cricket, which I do. Does that count as a concept album?

That was meant to be a hypothetical too, I was just trying to make the point that whatever it was, I would only want to see something born out of genuine creative enthusiasm not any external pressure of any kind, for example the likes of us clamouring for a new Pulp album. Only if they really want to!
