Not that many more as yet.

But someone should really try and research this one - http://www.pulpwiki.net/Pulp/Live13April1982TheLimitSheffield - it has leads!

Someone with the right skills should seriously consider doing a 'live Freaks' bootleg.

 ...I love this idea.

I've been meaning to find all the most energetic live versions of Different Class tracks to make one such bootleg. Sublime as the original recordings are, I've listened to the studio album six billion times and it's all a bit familiar. A 'live' version would renew it... make it feel fresher.

It was the reunion renditions of Mis Shapes in particular that made me think of this.

The other (late) albums might be harder to do, as there are fewer live versions of (for example) Davids Last Summer, Somewhere Like the Moon, The Day After the Revolution, Roadkill, etc.

But It aside, I suppose most the material from the early albums is out there.

Freaks, certainly is there. Separations lacks 'House'. Don't know about the more recent ones. Is Somewhere Like the Moon missing from HnH then? I know there's a lovely version of David.

Btw Freaks encore can be Tunnel, Manon and Silence :)

This is a fantastic release, thank you Stephen and all who allowed this to happen.

For me it confirms even more so that Pulp are much better live than in the Studio, so much energy in this. Master of the Universe is great!

Shotoki - see a previous thread for a discussion about why I don't think 'Tomorrow' is that song. 'Tomorrow' used kettle drums (even live apparently!) Where do you hear the word 'Tomorrow' btw...? I've yet to hear any audible words in it, but Mark Sturdy had a few. Stuff about hair and eye colours. Blue? Green?

I think he sings "I just got asked, what is tomorrow?" at 1:50, but I'm not certain. There's definitely "your eyes are blue" earlier though

The few words I can make out on this unknow track are;

1:40- "your hands(or handle) are white, your hair's a mess, your eyes are green, try to look your best

If you listen to Never Ending Story, at about 3:14 just as they start the unknown song, it sounds like Jarvis actually says the name of the song that follows.

Is he saying,     "Next is....rise coke player...... so I hope she.......credibility...??)

No apology needed Stephen re LOTL.

Russell was a bit of stickler for dotting i's & crossing t's with regard to the contract thing. It was something he handed to venue's, bands should they host/play with Pulp. I remember the contract covered stuff like payment, riders, dates/times etc. It had a lot of bold looking arrows on it & was hand written by Russell. The contract was signed in Flockton Court in the same room from where Jarvis had plunged to earth a few months previous.

I was kicked out of LOTL about a month after the gig for not turning up to rehearsals.....which is odd because my co-LOTL people hadn't told me we had any!!Shame because we were close to signing with Native at the time. Interesting fact...two members of that band went on to form Warp records.....

I'll look forward to your next update Stephen, thanks.

Blueowl. Cheers! And bigger thanks to the two people who made this happen.

Glad to see more and more lyrics coming in. Someone want to compile these?

"...Try and retain some credibility", btw.

I don't think the mystery song is Tomorrow. When I asked Russell about that one he described it as "violin, kettledrums and Jarvis screaming", as well as "fucking awful". It's got the violin and a bit of screaming, but apart from that...

I concur with Mr. Sturdy on this. "Tomorrow" was, as stated, 'new' on 31st May 1986 and featured 'violin and kettledrum'. At that May gig, it also states 'Never Ending Story' uses Kettledrum, which is seems to at the Maze bar too. But the 'unknown' track definitely does not include kettledrum. Nor does it sound like it ever would have done.

Mainly FAO Will, but still...

This gig wasn't recorded by Clyde. The only Clyde gig I currently have is the Rockwells one.

Secondly, don't work too hard trying to decipher "Didn't Feel a Thing" just yet...

I've corrected the 'Recording' section on the wiki page.

I'll wait for the better recording before trying to decipher "Didn't Feel a Thing". There are already some lyrics on the wiki, but they were added a while ago and not by me.

Cheers, chap!

I thought the lyrics had been added recently as the page stated it had changed recently. Ah well.

Keep trying to edit in a couple of extra songs of 'I Want You' (from second chorus) but it keeps making audible clipping noises that I can't edit out.

"When we met last week on [Saturday I couldn't make a sentence I couldn't even say what I meant to say: That I] want you It doesn't hurt to say I want you...."

Is how this runs. With the bits in square brackets missing. However, by editing in

"Never dare to [say: That I] want you It doesn't hurt to say I want you"

(square brackets again) from chorus two, a couple more seconds can be restored. Can anyone do this better than myself...?

....so that's what I was doing all those years ago 29/04/86.

Here's my recollections.....

1.The Maze was rammed that night, standing room only.

2. Pulp wiped the floor with us, btw I sang with LOTL, I didn't play bass.

3. Russell made me sign one of his contracts prior to supporting them, he kept a bundle in his briefcase 'cause he effectively managed that side of Pulp ( has anyone managed to get a copy of one of Mr Senior's contracts?).

4.Treebound Story were in attendance I believe , Hawley, Infante & Rob Gregory.

5.Two different sets of posters were produced to plug the evening, one by LOTL, one by PULP.

6.It was my last gig with LOTL prior to joining PULP.

7.My mum & sisters were in the audience.

Steven,

Good to hear from you!

Re: the Maze being packed. It certainly sounds like it. You can almost sense the excited atmosphere on the tape. And as for them 'wiping the floor with you' well, they certainly were on form that night!

Apologies for getting your LOTL role incorrect. I should have read around that.

Contracts for supporting a band? Jesus! What were the restrictions therein? I've supported 100+ bands in my time, and never had to sign a contract by any of them! Club/night managers yes, but never another band!

How come the long gap between this being your last LOTL gig and your first Pulp gig in Nov/Dec that year (was that the Hull gig with Captain Sleep)? I had always imagined you'd moved smoothly from one band to the next!

Btw I think there's going to be a future Portfolio dedicated entirely to your time with the band. Actually, on checking, it'll have to be 2 separate ones due to space reasons. It'll be the March '87 Limit gig, J&R inteview in May '87 on Radio Sheffield, three tracks from Nottingham Barracuda (Jul '87), Don't You Want Me Anymore/Rattlesnake session (Jul '87 again. Before or after Barracuda gig? I don't know), and a few mixes from the Death Comes to Town Session.

If you have anything I can add to your year in Pulp, then please do let me know, otherwise prepare to enjoy reliving your youth!

Seeing the amount of work Russell put into Pulp management up to 1990 or so, one really begins to understand why he becomes a little bitter at times with regards to his lessened influence as time went on...

Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell! http://uncommonpeople.co.uk/media-archive/bands/lay-of-the-land/

Never heard of many vocalists being forced out of bands before. Very odd! Did they replace you with someone else?

And about a week after you'd played the Limit with Pulp, too! Cracking set, that...

Cheers for the link, too.

I have created a wiki page for the unknown song:
http://www.pulpwiki.net/Pulp/Unknown1986Song

I've tried to work out a few of the lyrics, but it's not easy. If anybody can do any more, then please add it.

Also, does anybody have any more ideas about what it's called? 'Tomorrow' seems to have been pretty much ruled out. The one suggestion I've got so far (from Jason) is 'My First Wife'. That does seem within the realms of possibility to me. But I'm slightly hoping it's not called that, because a third 'First Wife' would be rather confusing.

''My First Wife if you don't count the one I divorced and the other one I killed'' maybe.

And if my memory serves me correctly they don't have much in common except for the title.
