Anyone ever managed to work out what 'Cousins' is about? Actual cousins of Jarvis'? He seems very coy about its title on the June '84 Hallamshire tape suggesting that its lyric may be a bit 'close to home' with him not wanting to reveal anything about it. But then it just 'slips out' if memory serves. A very odd, nasty - and passionate song...
Sick of the sight, Every object touched before Possessed Depressed I shouldn't have to call you I've got the key to your door. I'll take a look inside
I lie You lie You lie You lie You cry You cry You cry You cry
Oh, I'll talk to your mother, l will smile at your father who is sleeping on his feet Waiting for an accident I'll take you on the table I will creep into your garden But I'm standing on the pavement walking round and round and round and round and...
I Lie You lie You lie You lie You lie You cry You cry You cry
Took you six years to achieve this state Hopelessly staring at your fate Well, it's all too clear It's all too bare Well, you fell in love with something that isn't there And you see your father lying on the floor in a hopeless state you can't ignore And your mother's weighted down with the drinks she's tried Got 16 years hanging on her side You walk into the air and you shut the door And there's no use in crying, you can do no more And you put yourself in an airless flat You think it might be a place to hide You read somewhere it's been done before By someone in 1964 And you can't escape the blood and shit You can't escape, you're stuck with it
Then again it might just die away Oh, then again it might just die away Then again it might just die away Die away Die
I'm probably totally wrong but I always thought it was about two cousins having an affair (sad, I know, but these things probably happen) that caused the whole family to fall apart i.e. the father having an accident and the mother turning to drink...
Yeah, I thought that to an extent. But it's the fact that Jarvis isn't just a narrator in this one - he's part of it. It's as if it's about himself and his own cousin maybe? Or, if he's taking on someone else's role, that role is certainly a somewhat malevolent one...
I've never really given much thought to what it's about. I had the impression that it was just Jarvis trying to sound generally dark and angsty without really being about anything specific. Probably doing him a disservice though!
The thing about not wanting to announce the title at that gig, I took to just be part of the preoccupation he seemed to have that night with not acting out any rockstar cliches.
