This actually made me feel quite nauseous. And sad.

From This is Fake DIY about Russell's Miner Musical:

Within a couple of months, a draft of the first act was ready, but with the reformation of Pulp last year, the aptly christened 'Two Tribes' had to take a bit of a backseat for a while. Going back to my old job took a year out of the play, Senior tells us, but now Im back on it full-time.

How very, very sad.

Well we could see it coming, there was too many signs really. Sad, but not the end of the world for me, as i think Pulp post Russell was as good as Pulp with him. I wish him the best on his projects.

You really think they are good post-Russell as they were with him? Certainly there is some good stuff, but I always found they lacked the excitement, humour and energy of the Russell days.

Boo.

Not sure if I'm being spiteful, but the 'Two Tribes' website looks crap and all. Real amateurish job, and the descriptions of the characters in the play are so hackneyed and dull that it further upsets!

Well This is hardcore is my fav Pulp record and probably in my top 5 of the best album ever, so yes. I dont think WLL is as good but that's simply because they didnt choose the right songs. The WLL demos are up there with their best work.

Sure the humour is gone, but that's how our society is like now, I dont think Pulp 94 could work now, the energy is still there - well Jarvis still has a lot of it - and the excitement around a band can only be maintained for a few years. At least for masses. I'm excited, really excited to see what they have left in them.

Andy, I probably actually prefer WLL to TIH! But we'd be very boring if we agreed on everything. I think it's partly a production issue for me with TIH often sounding a bit bloated and muddy.

I am excited, I suppose, to see what happens with Pulp now. But I wouldn't really be excited about seeing them do more 'greatest hits' sets without Russell, as it would be a weaker version of the 2011 gigs.

Likewise, I couldn't imagine anything else like Brixton - getting the old obscurities out because it's not the same band members who played on them. Hearing 'Countdown' and Sheffield Sex City and stuff was amazing...but it wouldn't have been quite as amazing without that lineup doing them.

I do hope that this new Pulp do some new music, though. I would be interested in that. Just to carry on doing the reformation/nostalgia act thing when you're a member down is a little more undignified than the wonders of 2011 showed us.

If Pulp do more gigs, and again, anything after the (Central/)American dates is speculation at this point (though my money would still be on a last-hurrah big Sheffield gig which Russell would surely be involved in) the one advantage of Russell not being there would be the last two records could get more live attention. But I'd prefer Russell to stay until the end of this reformation and them to all bow out together as a six-piece.

Yeah I'm sure Russell would return for a local final gig, really hope so anyway. I agree with Stephen. If the future is some more greatest hits sets I'd be wanting to hear stuff like Countdown than the later stuff

They won't drag it out, that's for other bands to do.

Maybe they're planning on touring It for a few months and Russell will return for the Freaks tour!

Well, at least they're on good terms with Russell- it hardly seemed likely that he'd want to continue touring the world with Pulp, but if they continue with the reunion for much longer it seems likely that he'll return. It was great to have him there for last years shows!

I don't think it means Russell won't be involved anymore. Once a play is written, it is written.

But it's not written. Read the comment that he made. He has this whole year free. And he's planning on showing a couple of acts of his play at Tramlines. That's in June if memory serves. That's quite a bit of work to get something polished by then, and presumably he wants the rest of the play shortly after.

Him and his chum have rented offices for the purposes of writing the play, so I can't imagine he'll be willing to pay money for office space he's not using!

I think it depends on what your favorite album is as well... I think This is Hardcore is their best... so I think they were just as good w/ or w/o him. Though I was hoping to see him w/ the band..

Let's not be hasty here. It isn't explicitly stated at any point that he won't be involved with the Pulp activity this year. You never know.

Yeah, I agree with Sturdy. There's only, what, six Pulp shows scheduled so far this year? That's hardly full-time!

Also, FWIW, he's included in the Pulp pic on Radio City Music Hall's site.

What is the first Pulp appearance of 2012 to be, then? The NME Awards, or the US Tour...?

I've seen Channel 4s listings for that week and the awards aren't on. I reckon they'll be shown the week after

Hmmm.. I think we're jumping the gun a bit. Was this the interview done months ago but never published until now? He could have been referring to the past six months or so of non-Pulp activity in that case. He still hasn't been removed from the concert posters (except for Mexico) and I'm still taking the Radio City Music Hall's claim that the NY show will feature "all original members" (whether that was cut/pasted or not) .....but that may just be wishful thinking on my part.

cry

If that bit on the website about conquering phobias isn't referring to Russell now we know he's not touring, what is it referring to?

Maybe it is not referring to anything.

Maybe he changed his mind?? It wasn't just the question on their site that made it seem like Russell would be involved; the initial press for the U.S. dates specifically included him.  Now they seem to be telling us that he won't be playing these dates, which I find very upsetting.  I wish they had been clear about this from the start.  Or they could just be messing with us, who knows.

Makes me really glad I made the trips to see them (him) last year...
