I've written lots of lyrics over the years and feel I've probably ripped off Jarv's style in my time...
(not saying they're on the same level btw... lacking the humour)
Good Grief
Good grief won't you hand me a line And we will each spin a lie Then we can leave it alone
And each time on the ground where we meet The earth is cracking beneath And giving birth to a sea
Cutting thru' That chemical thrust On the cusp of our lust Was it worth coming up Rarely to get down to the stuff That pheromone musk Is there ever enough
You and I At each others throats Forever and ever on
And if you're settling I'll let you know You know I never learn to just say no To be delivered from a lonely road I owe, I owe, I owe I owe my all
Good grief how she gives me the lift As she purses her lips On the hills by her home
All the while earth's falling to bits I find the ignorance bliss It's primative
Sour faced she's got the ache of all ache's She's got the tricks of the trade and still She lacks further play
Not enough To bother with love There is no voice from above And no reason to stay
You and I At each others throats You and I At each others throats You and I At each others throats
Forever and ever on
And if you're settling I'll let you know You know I never learn to just say no To be delivered from a lonely road I owe, I owe, I owe I owe my all
Good Grief
Good Grief
Good Grief
Good Grief
I aim to please I keep the peace Each day to repeat Forever and ever on
And if you're settling I'll let you know You know I never learn to just say no To be delivered from a lonely road I owe, I owe, I owe I owe my all

Anyone ever heard any lyrics and they've been reminded of Jarvis' lyrics in some way?
My two examples are about sex but there's more to it than just that.
First off when I first heard "Not Fair" by Lilly Allen I thought, Jarvis would be proud of those lyrics. Cruel and counter to what you think the songs about when youre not fully paying attention.
Then the new album by The Roots (Undun - fantastic by the way) features the line
"Daddy should have let me be a stain on the bed sheet" - Dark, sordid, witty... I'm not saying I can Imagine him singing this line - just thematically and stylistically similar.
If any of you actually know what I'm talking about please share your own examples.
I dunno, I think Jarvis would find your second example too crude. Sounds the type of thing two teenage lads would say to each other. There's probably a host of copycats, can't really think of any now. Not direct lifts anyway. Maximo Park at times reminded me of Jarvis' lyrics. Observations on humdrum life, doomed-relationship imagery etc. Especially the spoken bits. From the brilliant last song, Acrobat, on their debut album:
This room gets so cold in the winter, What will it take to heat this house? I just want to feel comfortable, When there's only the two of us in my bed, My foot nearly brushes your leg, I cant draw it away, I cant push it forward, It lies stranded, It belongs to someone else, We knew each other once, This cant be what you want
Conversely, a couple of Jarvis' lines that I've heard snatches of in other songs include ''When you kissed my eyes awake'' from Scott Walker's Always Coming Back To You (I wonder did he clock that when producing Birds In Your Garden?!) and ''Love, Dear, is strictly for the birds'' from Nick Cave's Idiot Prayer (Compare with ''Practising is strictly for the birds'' on Cuckoo). Jarvis is a big fan of both so it's not a stretch to say he lifted them, consciously or not!
I think Jarvis can be delightfully crude. It's one of the reasons I love him. "I'm not looking for a relationship, just a willing receptacle" springs to mind.
Well they might be if they read this. You probably right but I like the line. Also that album brought a wee tear to my eye on the last song, something Jarvis has so far failed to do.

That Roots album is the best thing I've listened too in such a long time. As always way ahead of the competition. One Time does it for me.
The bit that got me was: "some think life is a living hell, some live life just living well, I live life trying to tip the scale, my way" Have you heard The Ecstatic by Mos Def?
Cody Chesnutt... Got to admit I haven't investigated beyond The Seed 2.0. Can you recommend an album?
That Mos Def album if you haven't heard it, it uses samples but from such a diverse range of music it's not like anything else I've heard. Experimental but in the best way. I've had it three years now and keep coming back to it regularly.

I see what you mean about 'My God' that really is a Jarv tell. Check out Jesus+ if you're in the mood for some political punk. I seem to be unable to write anything other than drug songs / not taking drug songs / girl songs / politics songs - But then, is there really owt else?
I've been a big fan since I heard Phrenology. The difference between them and their peers is that they're a band, watching their DVD, seeing how the bassist plays, like he's barely touching the strings, it's that roll and groove. However in terms of Rap in general I'dhave to say Big Boi's solo effort is one of the best thing I've heard from the genre. Assume you're also a Cody Chesnutt fan?
He's only got the one double album which is modestly titled 'The Headphone Masterpiece' - And it is. The only Mos Def I have is the New Danger but I'll have to check out some more recent stuff.
Also this side of the Atlantic you may want to check out Task Force - Music From The Corner Volume 3. Best British rap i've ever heard.
Is it meant to be funny?
That's a bit like saying "oh you like all that singing over guitars do you? Have a listen to this Black Lace song. You'll love it"
I hope you haven't fallen into the rather unhealthy trap of dismissing an entire genre of music as crap...
Damon Albarn, Thom Yorke, Chris Martin all like rap, I'm in good company. Maybe not the last one...

To quote you earlier, ''Woah, sorry if I offended you''. I posted it cos I thought you might genuinely like it. Not, as you think, in a ''Oh, he likes all that shite, so he'll probably like this nonsense'' way. I think it's great, a clever piss-take of the boy-racers using their motors as cock extensions culture so prevalent. Maybe the Irish humour doesn't travel too well... (though I'm sure you like Father Ted?).
And I don't know where you got the idea that I thought an entire genre of music was crap, crossed wires I guess. I wouldn't consider myself an authority on rap or hip hop but I have albums by artists like Grandmaster Flash, Dre, The Beastie Boys, Outkast etc. and enjoy the vast majority of them.
