Why Jarvis of course! But then we already knew he was cool. What was a much bigger surprise and delight was seeing Russell at 28!

Sounds like something from 1995. How bizarre!

Maybe we should all be non-nostalgic and positive and name one band we love whose peak was between 2001 and 2011 in order to get rid of this whole 'last ten years of music have been awful' schtick that's so popular these days!

I'm selecting Art Brut.

Mine are:

Spinto band
Dr Dog
the Libertines
BRMC
Lucky Soul
The Pipettes
The Black Keys
The White Stripes
The Strokes
Ed Harcourt
and many more... But clearly none had the cultural impact, hence the "90s were better". They're good, some even great, but none are life changing, like Pulp or two other bands from that time. Maybe the Libertines...

Grinderman have made two remarkable albums in the last decade but could you really class them as new? I quite liked S.C.U.M. for a while. I would probably have to say The White Stripes. To be honest I find it hard to connect with new bands who are, sometimes, nearly 20 years younger than me!

MGMT's second album (I still only know the singles from the first one. Kids annoyed me so much that I wrote them off for a fair while) was the most interesting experimental-pop by a major band I've heard in years. Really hope they keep it going.

Dare I say Hot Chip? The Streets? Russell should have been in the list... Maybe he was 51? Sandwiched between Liam Gallagher and Rebbie Jackson.

Franz Ferdinand

and honourable mentions to

Arctic Monkeys
Arcade Fire
The XX
The Libertines
The White Stripes
The Strokes
The Killers

I don't think there was too much wrong with music in the early/middle of the decade.  Only in the last four years or so has it gone down the dumper

I'm definitely getting older, my son teases me whenever anyone comes on TV these days that they are my favourite band.  Currently it's JLS.

You know you're getting old when you listen to Radio 5 ahead of a music station.   Only time I listen to Jarvis (or XFM) is when I'm trying to avoid football results on a Sunday afternoon.

Totally agree, I Found A Whistle is an amazing moment on a brilliant album.

Joking is not allowed when we're talking about something as serious as NME's estimation of Russell's coolness...(I fell for your lies too, damn you).

As far as bands to restore our faith...for me it would be Arcade Fire; The Suburbs is so great I'm afraid to listen to any of their other albums.

Some young-ish bands that show promise, imo:
Beach House
Best Coast
Band of Horses
Ford & Lopatin
The Joy Formidable
Airborne Toxic Event
M83

It's some rapper who was completely unknown to everyone and without a record deal until NME decided that she was so indie she was cooler than everyone else. Since then she has become well known (well more well known) and record labels want her - I can only assume this publicity makes her less cool in the eyes of NME

Hmmm - that sounds a bit dodgy. Oh well at least if she no longer fits their no 1 in coolness criteria, Jarvis can be first place now.

In reply to the question about recent/current bands we like: Goldfrapp. And also Lhasa de Sela (who sadly died last year), Gotan Project, Antony and the Johnsons, Scissor Sisters and Rufus Wainwright. My current favourites are Metronomy.

Maximo Park, Madlib, MF Doom, The Avalanches, Scratch Perverts, Plan B, Me First & The Gimme Gimmes, Gorrillaz, Talib Kweli, Akala, Dan Le Sac Vs Scroobius Pip, Mos Def... (The Ecstatic by Mos Def is a modern classic and one of the most inventive albums I've heard)

Jazza, please tell me you're not referring to MIA.

I honestly think the oughts were the worst decade in music. Lots of great stuff in the begining, The Microphones, The Unicorns, Menomena.... Animal Collective are the only ones still doing it for me nowadays.

ha! First time I've been called 'fresh and new'! But it does seem to me that NME are purposely choosing people who nobody will have heard of to go on the list so that they seem superior. Clearly nothing revolutionary is happening in music at the moment so they should put all the 'oldies' in their cool list because that's where upcoming artists are going to get their inspiration from, rather than the musical wasteland we've seen in recent years.

And NME asked me if I wanted to be number 1, but I rejected because I'm far too cool for lists

Actually I've just reminded myself, Kelis is a brilliant act from the last ten years. And Nas. And Jay Z... fuck it, and Beyonce. Good music is good music. Who cares if there's no guitars in it.

That 'ring on it' songs pretty out there! I bet they had to fight the record company bosses when they wanted it to be a single. And she released an album named after an arse washing device.

I'd had a couple of jars when I mentioned Beyonce... She does sing a good pop song though. I know she doesn't write them but half their success is in the delivery. I think the guy in that Banks video wearing the baseball cap should be on the cool list! The new Bez.

I know that, but there is no geting away from the fact your background and upbringing has a huge influence on who you become. It's easy to succeed when you have money and influence behind you, and you grow up having the belief instilled in you that there are no barriers to becoming what you want to be. I accept there are exceptions to the rule, and would like to think Frank Turner is for real and not just another version of that Greek girl from St Martin's college.
