Hi Alphi. I just made a long list of all the members I wanted to contact and went through it. Some of them were easy (eg the writers on the Sheffield Star, who were amongst the first that I spoke to). Others involved spending a long time going through the Sheffield phone book through trial and error. As I interviewed people, I'd mention other people I was trying to get hold of, and sometimes they'd be able to help. People would also sometimes recommend other people I could get in touch with - eg Martin Lilleker suggested I talk to Ogy McGrath, who (I think) suggested I talk to John Nicholls etc etc.
It would all be a lot easier to do now - half of them are on Facebook!
Actually convincing people to talk wasn't much of a problem. Most of them were just happy to have the chance to tell their story. Some wanted to know more about what sort of book it was going to be, but it was fairly clear I was just a fan rather than someone who was going to do some sort of nasty hatchet-job. One or two checked with Jarvis first that it was OK to speak to me. Apparently he said yes!

Have you considered an update of the eBook?
My books are starting to go the way of my CDs/LPs, forever consigned to a storage room off the North Circular Road, so I have started getting eBooks. The other advantage is I can take them on trains without them getting dog-eared.

They all took a fairly linear format. I'd normally ask them what their background was before they got involved with Pulp, then chronologically go through key points of their time with the band, let the conversation digress as much as they wanted as long as I got my main points answered, and then finally ask them what they've been doing since. Most of them were pretty easy - it didn't need a lot of questionning to set them off!

That has been mooted as a possibilty. By which I mean my Editor at Omnibus said maybe they could do it, I asked him (twice) how much they were going to pay me, and he didn't reply!

1. Why do you think Mark, Candida and Steve were unwilling to talk? Similar to Russell, didn't want to tip the balance without Jarvis giving his side of the story?
2. How or why (do you think) were you able to get Nick to talk?
1. Maybe that. Also, ridiculous as it may seem considering the time it took to write the book, timing may have been an issue. I spent a lot of time trying to chase Jarvis for an interview, and when I was going through the official channels (ie Rough Trade) they didn't want to ask the rest of the band without getting an answer from Jarv first. When I finally gave up on that one, I got Alex from Pulp People to forward a message to the others (I'd tried this many years before without success). This was mid-2002 though, only a couple of before my deadline. Mark was in 'media blackout' mode at the time so no one was ever going to get an interview from him. Candida was about to go travelling around the world so probably wasn't going to be available. Steve, dunno.
2. See above - sent him a message through Alex and he met up with me in Sheffield for a couple of highly enjoyable afternoons.
