Right, I'm not missing this one! This time I can justify the expense by getting someone to buy it for me as an xmas pressie, even tho I hate xmas and am not over-enamoured with the concept of the book either. But in the style of the Grinch, my heart may grow a size or two at the prospect of having it signed in person by Jarvis.
only if he recognises you. I can't see - do you have to book a place or anything since it is also a presentation as well? if not what do you reckon is a safe time to come - do not want to risk it!
Yeah the grapes are a sweet touch but don't fall into the trap I did. You see, I didn't know wheter to eat the grape, and thus ruin any converstaion, or simply hold it in my hand, which makes ou seem a bit weird.
Anyone planning on going to this, I just phoned rough trade and they said that you will have to buy the books in store or online before the day and they'll hand/send you the wristband as it will almost definitely be sold out before the 5th. Apparently 250 places or something
ah no, sorry! I ordered it online and was also confused by the out of stock message so I rang them and they told me it was generic and that it would arrive in a few days (and it did!)
So basically just keep checking back then and it will be available at some point? At the moment I can't even put an order in - it just goes straight to out of stock and that's all. Sorry if I'm being a bit thick on this one!
Haha - I see now and I have 4 in there! All ordered now (just the one), but no mention of a wristband anywhere. From what you said that will come with it as standard?
Thanks for your help, and hopefully see you there.
They had better. I only bought it for this occasion. Will have to contact them to make double sure as I am cursed by bad luck and things going tits up.
After missing the previous signings, I am over on the right side of the pond now, and very much want to go to this. My only concern is when I click 'order' on their webpage, it says 'out of stock' and shows that I have no items in my shopping cart. Am I doing something wrong, or do I need to call them up and give my details over the phone?
I really don't want to miss this opportunity that's presented itself to me!

really? I can still manage to add books to my basket - go to http://www.roughtrade.com/site/shop_detail.lasso?search_type=sku&sku=343113 , press 'buy now' and then it automatically adds it to the basket which can be seen at the top of the page
So today I made a diversion to Rough Trade East after work to pick up the book and wristband. On my way back home on the tube I look up and at the other end of the carriage was the unmistakeable figure of Jarvis himself. Given that the only reason I was in that part of London was to get the wristband and hence opportunity to meet Jarvis, I am slightly freaked out by the coincidence. To top it off I was listening to his solo album at the time. Weird.
anet, if you go give me a shout, i only live round the corner. i probably won't go due to my shame of the last signing i went to.
Yay! I have my book and my wristband now. So I will be going for sure. If you did happen to go again, I'm sure I would out-shame you, so don't worry about it. My previous encounter with Jarvis involved leaping upon him (metaphorically) from some park bushes (almost - it was in a park, and up until the point of his arrival I was sat on some grass near some bushes).
Unfortunately the carriage was pretty rammed, I was due to get off at the next stop and he was talking to someone else, so i just gawped in open mouth amazement until I got off.
(hoping I wont be recognised as the weird staring man at the signing)
I'm looking forward to going to this; however, my boyfriend is planning on going with me. Do you all think he needs to buy a book as well or will they let him in? He's not nearly the Jarvis fan that I am, but I hate making him wait outside, especially since he's agreed to go down with me on the day (we're coming from Birmingham).
Also, for those who've gone before to these events, any idea how long they typically last? I'm trying to determine if I need to book a hotel for the night while he goes back to Brum (he has to go back to work)...
Ta very much in advance!

i reckon it'll be a couple of hours? but of course rough trade will be able to let you know there are lots of nice bars that he can wait in, i can recommend the pride of spitalfields just round the corner, or if he's into that kind of stuff the big chill is right next door
Has anyone who has ordered their book not got it yet? I ordered 2 copies late last week and requested first class signed for but so far I haven't gotten any email from rough trade saying its been shipped so I'm a bit worried.

mine didn't say it had been shipped, it just turned up a few days after I ordered it. So long as you got the confirmation of order email I wouldn't worry - it'll probably arrive soon
It might be worth giving them a ring to see if it's been dispatched. Only saying that because I ordered mine last week too, and chose the cheapest posted option and it arrived just 2 days later. Maybe it's taking longer because it needs to be signed for?
hmmm by the way: is that book worth buying or is it just lyrics printed with two lines commentaries under it ?
It varies from song to song and the notes are at the end of the book. Some are 'Milk Tray was a popular brand of English chocolate' kind of things but some are much more detailed. The Wickerman entry, for example, contains jarvis entire World Of Interiors piece that inspired the song. You also get a very nice introduction from the man himself about how he writes songs. In my opinion it's one of the better music/lyric books. Plus it looks gorgeous, all orange and brown. I have to say though, if I was going to the Rough Trade event I'd be really pee'd off at having to buy another book!
oh no, I'm arriving in London on the 6th (live in Norway) :( :(
I think he'll be taking that book signing to Paris this 14th. Roughtrade temporary Parisian store. Not yet confirmed. If I'm wrong, I apologize in advance. I don't even know if this piece of info is helpful to you, Tiram. Sorry.
The presentation was entertaining. Jarvis treated to some readings of lyrics from the book which included (off the top of my head) Wickerman, Sorted for E's and Whizz, Inside Susan, David's Last Summer, Space and for the 'encore' Cunts. These were accompanied by a slide show (Jarvis joked about hoping it not being too much like going found your grandparent's).
As for my turn to get my book signed, which happened seconds after that photo above of Jazza was taken, the less said the better. One of my worst examples ever of engaging mouth before brain - *hangs head in shame*!
Basically First he introduced when and why the band was made and showed a few photos on a powerpoint presentation. He then read and commenting on Wickerman, Acrylic Afternoons, Modern Marriage, Darren s Dream, Sorted for Es and Wizz and Space (I think that was it) and had some relevant photos and images projected behind him (He doesn't seem to have much luck with technology - this time the remote for changing slides was broken so he had to move to the other side of the stage by his laptop). After that he signed peoples books . Quite a few people so he didn't have time to say much and in any case I was too gob-smacked to say much, but at least I didn't make a complete idiot of myself which is the best I could have hoped for (forgot to thank him for the summer concerts though!). Got my book and set list from the 31st signed ('Be of good cheer' & [arrow to the songs] 'It all happened') and he commented that it was in good condition.
Wow, sounds a much better talk than the one at Cheltenham. How long did it go on for? Did he take any questions? What is ''Darren s Dream?!'' (the TimeOut article by Spooner in the book?). Any extra info about the songs like Modern Marriage?
Yes, Eamonn, Darren's Dream was the Time Out Article. The presentation probably lasted about 45 mins I think, although I wasn't timing it! No questions though.
Haha - yes he wrote exactly that again, and when I saw it I accidently said out loud 'oh no!' (my attention had been diverted by the sweets on the counter, so i didn't see him writing it) He really looked taken aback, and I spent the rest of the time apologising madly and explaining it was fine. I felt awful! I was accidently rude to Jarvis :( - but the reality was that 'oh no!' was HONESTLY supposed to stay in my head, and was just a response to a joke I'd had with my boyfriend before I left over the chances of Jarvis writing the same thing again. Talk about coming across as a rude, ungrateful bitch in front of one of your heroes!
I am down with the beard but I do wish he would get that mop trimmed.
Anet..don't be too embarrassed the things I saw fans do in the 90's would make people blush.
I think I might have been Jazza's age when she ws born...oh my.
A video of jarvis reading inside susan at the roughtrade signing http://vimeo.com/channels/roughtradeshops#35371093 Pure Magic!I think it'd work well as part of a novel too.
