Whilst This Is As Good As It Gets is pretty good - it's also worth giving 'Dirty Dick' a go - personally my favourite RM track....

RM in my opinion is better than WLL and vastly superior to Jarvis's solo stuff .

I don't agree about it being better than those other three albums, more consistent perhaps... It is hood though. I got DD on one of the Yahoos. And I bought the Billy Jack/Sexualized single on Amazon for the Good AIGs b-side which I didn't realise was on there when it was originally released. That was before I discovered this site though so it may also be on Yahoo.

Does anyone know if Russell ever ended up recording with Art Brut? I read that he was asked to produce their album, but he's not mentioned in the liner notes of the album I bought (which I didn't really care for much at the time, but I only listened once). Maybe I got the wrong album?

Well, since most of you seem to agree Relaxed Muscle is worth a listen, I'll have to get my hands on the CD and some of those non-album tracks! Funnily enough, I've never heard anything good about them until I came across this place, and I guess that's why I've never shown an interest in this side project of Jarvis before now.

Twiggy, I asked myself the same question, and ended up doing some research only to find out Eddie Argos, the singer in Art Brut, mentioning Russell in an interview as "doing some production work for them" or something along those lines. I think it went a bit like: "Russell of Pulp said, while doing some production work for us, they used to be compared to The Fall," I remember The Fall being mentioned anyway. Sorry, I'm not of much help, I guess it happened in some way if Argos has been quoted saying that, but there seems to be no trace of said production work elsewhere!

Didn't Nick join another band after Pulp? Is that worth investigating. Off topic but I'd say the worst thing Jarvis has done (worse than Silence) and therefore worth missing is Somewhere with Marian Faithful. It's bloody awful!

Nick did have a band going, he told me their name when I met him but I must admit I've forgotten. I worked with someone from Baby Birkin once, she liked Russell

Nick's band was Pollinates. Saw them supporting Jarvis in Sheffield in '07, they were pretty good.

I've never heard the Charlotte Gainsbourg album 5.55. Don't know why, especially since I have a mild obsession with miss Gainsbourg. Is it any good? Might buy it this month.

Love the Venini song. I never heard their stuff either. I wanted to and I wanted to hear Baby Birkin but no internet back then! It was like being the only Pulp fan. I remember reading about both in the newspaper & looking for the stuff in the local shops but no luck. Just saw this Baby Birkin vid:

Is this the one Russell produced?

I haven't listened to Relaxed Muscle either actually & I missed the 'Walk Like a Panther' performance on TOTP. I used to watch TOTP as much as I could but missed it sometimes. Amazing having access to all this stuff now but the problem now is there is so much of it all at once that I need to make the time to wade through it!!

(Was *very* hard to find stuff pre-internet unless you were near a major city centre with good record shops. I do remember finding Alpha's EP 'South' back in 2001 with Jarvis's vocals on the Jimmy Webb cover 'This is Where I Came In' & finding the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack just to get 'We Are the Boyz', Great Expectations just to get 'Like A Friend' - which I never even knew existed till 2001! Info was hard to get)

Saw, it must be a VERY mild obsession! I really like it. Try and get the version with the (I think) two bonus tracks which I wasn't aware of when I bought it. He wrote a song with Neil Hannon on it! "I saw a photograph, a woman in a bath of hundred dollar bills, if the cold doesn't kill her money will"

I'm dying to hear Unshaker/Exotic Night/Hoboken. Wait, does anyone know if Russell was still in Venini when those songs were written/recorded?

I was -also- wondering which Venini track opens with the line "Dress me up in Gucci" that Russell was so fond of... 

A friend of mine recommended the last two Charlotte Gainsbourg albums, I will have to do something about that as well. And what did you lot think of Baby Birkin? I'm not a fan of S. Gainsbourg or J. Birkin, but I found the LP relatively enjoyable.

I must have heard almost everything that's been released, however, Moe's post has reminded me that I've never actually heard the Unshaker EP and I would like to.

Isn't there an unreleased Venini album somewhere as well?

No, Russell produced and arranged  the album from 1998 called Classée X, which included the singles "Melo Melo" and "Jane B".  They're all covers, though Russell apparently wrote some lyrics for Jane B (according to the notes on the single sleeve); he also played strings on that track.  "Melo Melo" is in the 07 yahoo account if anyone wants to listen!

 It's good. My favorite album of 2006, but than The Jarvis Cocker Record.

The one which Beck produced? It's even better than the 'Jarvis one', in my honest opinion. The music is different. It's more like a continuation of Beck's Modern Guilt, which happens to be one of my favorite records of the last few years.
