I wasn't really that aware of them at the time... Don't really know much about them now. What style of music are they? Did Russell write lyrics? Why haven't you listened to RM?
Never listened to Venini either and although I have heard Relaxed muscle, I've never really sat down and listened to it (other than Mary, which is great) - think I was a bit put off by Sexualised which to me just sounded like Jarvis constantly stating things that are sexualised for a few minutes and seemed dissapointing compared to Pulp + his solo stuff. Maybe I'm being unfair and the time is right to give it another chance;
I bought the RM album when it came out so couldn't really compare it to the solo stuff, I just presumed Jarvis had moved on. I remember it feeling quite mysterious at the time. I couldn't say I listen to it alot but when I do I really enjoy it, Beastmaster is one of my faves. I've never heard the studio version of Le Roi de Fourmis. Is it on one of the accounts?

It's sort of arty, vaguely French glam-rock - Suzi Quattro meets Grace Jones meets Stereolab, if that's not too overblown a claim. I LOVED them at the time, many people didn't.
Russell did contribute to the lyrics, but they were mainly from the peculiar mind of the band's singer Debbie Lime.

Oh, and the most notable things I haven't heard are probably Jarvis' solo B-sides, with the exception of The Loss Adjuster which I like very very much.

If that Venini dong had been an instrumental it would have been fuckin A! I found myself looking for God and Apparently are, for me, better than a lot of what got on the album.
BTW, if you all wait for someone else to congratulate me on my genius title for this thread we might end up in a situation where no one's congratulated me. That would just be wrong.
Yes, the vocals/lyrics were probably the most 'controversial' aspect. I think they have a certain something though. Here's another (non-embeddable) video:

A bit excluding of the other Pulponians though innit?
Didn't Mark do something on an album with Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth (incidentially, Moore split up with his wife and bandmate recently after 27 or something years together)?

Phwoar...THANKS! Never seen any live footage of them before.
The album Russell produced for Baby Birkin is excellent as well (imo), if anyone hasn't heard it. Can't find any clips online, unfortunately. Would this be allowed in the yahoo account?? Just came across an interview with the singer; apparently Russell was a very harsh producer...
It's a cover of a french singer, Michael Polnareff. It was recorded in 93, I think, but not released till about 98(?). They do a live version on the 94 Black Session. However, I'd love to hear the sudio version. Does anyone have it?
I have yet to listen to Relaxed Muscle... Never heard anything good about the album until I came across this forum!
I love Venini (my favourite Pulp side project). Although I enjoy Debbie Lime's vocals, I agree that instrumental versions of the songs would have been ace. Thanks for the "Carnival Star" video! I had no idea it existed!
As for Steve's production work, I liked some of the tracks on The Long Blondes' first album. Oh, and that song Russell played guest violin on is nice.
saw119, you can listen to Le Roi Des Fourmis here and I found a download link here.
Ah, seems like my other post has been flagged as spam for whatever reason (could it be because I've been ghosting around for so long? Or because I've provided links? A combination of both?).
I'm not going to retype the whole thing (in which I was saying that I love Venini, thanks for the "Carnival Star" video, The Long Blondes' song Russell played guest violin on is nice, I have yet to listen to Relaxed Muscle), but saw119: you can find Le Roi Des Fourmis on Youtube, it's been uploaded by RarePulp, and I'm positive it's the studio version!
I don't agree about it being better than those other three albums, more consistent perhaps... It is hood though. I got DD on one of the Yahoos. And I bought the Billy Jack/Sexualized single on Amazon for the Good AIGs b-side which I didn't realise was on there when it was originally released. That was before I discovered this site though so it may also be on Yahoo.
Does anyone know if Russell ever ended up recording with Art Brut? I read that he was asked to produce their album, but he's not mentioned in the liner notes of the album I bought (which I didn't really care for much at the time, but I only listened once). Maybe I got the wrong album?
Well, since most of you seem to agree Relaxed Muscle is worth a listen, I'll have to get my hands on the CD and some of those non-album tracks! Funnily enough, I've never heard anything good about them until I came across this place, and I guess that's why I've never shown an interest in this side project of Jarvis before now.
Twiggy, I asked myself the same question, and ended up doing some research only to find out Eddie Argos, the singer in Art Brut, mentioning Russell in an interview as "doing some production work for them" or something along those lines. I think it went a bit like: "Russell of Pulp said, while doing some production work for us, they used to be compared to The Fall," I remember The Fall being mentioned anyway. Sorry, I'm not of much help, I guess it happened in some way if Argos has been quoted saying that, but there seems to be no trace of said production work elsewhere!

Didn't Nick join another band after Pulp? Is that worth investigating. Off topic but I'd say the worst thing Jarvis has done (worse than Silence) and therefore worth missing is Somewhere with Marian Faithful. It's bloody awful!
Nick did have a band going, he told me their name when I met him but I must admit I've forgotten. I worked with someone from Baby Birkin once, she liked Russell
I've never heard the Charlotte Gainsbourg album 5.55. Don't know why, especially since I have a mild obsession with miss Gainsbourg. Is it any good? Might buy it this month.
According to Truth & Beauty there was no album. Two singles, an EP and a track on their website. Mon Camion/St Tropez Carnival Star/Carnival Star (ver. 2) Postcard (mp3 website only) Unshaker/Exotic Night/Hoboken
Love the Venini song. I never heard their stuff either. I wanted to and I wanted to hear Baby Birkin but no internet back then! It was like being the only Pulp fan. I remember reading about both in the newspaper & looking for the stuff in the local shops but no luck. Just saw this Baby Birkin vid:

I haven't listened to Relaxed Muscle either actually & I missed the 'Walk Like a Panther' performance on TOTP. I used to watch TOTP as much as I could but missed it sometimes. Amazing having access to all this stuff now but the problem now is there is so much of it all at once that I need to make the time to wade through it!!
(Was *very* hard to find stuff pre-internet unless you were near a major city centre with good record shops. I do remember finding Alpha's EP 'South' back in 2001 with Jarvis's vocals on the Jimmy Webb cover 'This is Where I Came In' & finding the Velvet Goldmine soundtrack just to get 'We Are the Boyz', Great Expectations just to get 'Like A Friend' - which I never even knew existed till 2001! Info was hard to get)

Saw, it must be a VERY mild obsession! I really like it. Try and get the version with the (I think) two bonus tracks which I wasn't aware of when I bought it. He wrote a song with Neil Hannon on it! "I saw a photograph, a woman in a bath of hundred dollar bills, if the cold doesn't kill her money will"

Thanks to Sturdy
I'm dying to hear Unshaker/Exotic Night/Hoboken. Wait, does anyone know if Russell was still in Venini when those songs were written/recorded?
I was -also- wondering which Venini track opens with the line "Dress me up in Gucci" that Russell was so fond of...
A friend of mine recommended the last two Charlotte Gainsbourg albums, I will have to do something about that as well. And what did you lot think of Baby Birkin? I'm not a fan of S. Gainsbourg or J. Birkin, but I found the LP relatively enjoyable.

I must have heard almost everything that's been released, however, Moe's post has reminded me that I've never actually heard the Unshaker EP and I would like to.
Isn't there an unreleased Venini album somewhere as well?

No, Russell produced and arranged the album from 1998 called Classée X, which included the singles "Melo Melo" and "Jane B". They're all covers, though Russell apparently wrote some lyrics for Jane B (according to the notes on the single sleeve); he also played strings on that track. "Melo Melo" is in the 07 yahoo account if anyone wants to listen!
I sold you some duff info the other day Sarah: Year of the Dog is the b-side and As Good As It Gets is on the compilation 'Electric Bible Vol. 1' which is a canny compilation in parts.

It's good. My favorite album of 2006, but than The Jarvis Cocker Record.

The one which Beck produced? It's even better than the 'Jarvis one', in my honest opinion. The music is different. It's more like a continuation of Beck's Modern Guilt, which happens to be one of my favorite records of the last few years.

Yep Russ is on the Unshaker EP, which like the web-only track Postcard came from the unreleased album. Also on there is Roxy, with the infamous "dress me up in Gucci" lyric!
Geek fact: Venini drummer Bob Barton, along with Nick Burke who replaced Russell in the band's dying days, are now in The Human League's touring band!

The album that Jarvis did with Air for Charlotte Gainsbourg where he wrote a bunch of songs. That was a hole up until a few months back. AF 607109 I think is one of the best things he has written. When I flew to the UK this year I had it on repeat.....perfect travel song.
When you read that song title you can't fathom how it can be part of a catchy song, but then you hear it!
I've been listening to IRM from a magazine CD (TransitionTransmission - I got it in a charity shop, not sure what magazine).
I like it for many reasons:
1 - she's made a catchy song from what must have been a traumatic experience 2 - it features MRI sound effects 3 - it tickles me royally that IRM is French for MRI.
