Is it ironic that I won't be able to met Jarvis because the company he works for won't let me transfer my ticket? People who will be there: Can you try to persuade him to do another signing sometime, please?

Got this in an email today. Shame about the photos... we'll see how it works in practice. I am going with a friend so I will see if we can take pictures of each other during the signing. Hope the Sheffield people have more time.

This is to remind you that you have reserved a place in the priority queue for the EXCLUSIVE LONDON signing with Jarvis Cocker on Monday 24 October, 6.30 - 7.30 pm in the fiction department on the ground floor of Foyles, 113-119 Charing Cross Road, London, WC2H 0EB.

*PLEASE NOTE*
As Jarvis will only be signing for a very limited period of time, & as we have received lots of requests for priority booking, he will only be able to sign copies of Mother, Brother, Lover.
Jarvis won't be able to sign any other memorabilia.
Due to time constraints he won't be able pose for photographs.
Copies of the regular edition of Mother, Brother, Lover will be on sale at the event. Copies of the limited edition of Mother, Brother, Lover won't be available as publication has been put back until early November 2011.
We do recommend that you arrive early to secure a good place in the priority queue.

What is the difference with the limited edition of the book?

From the Faber & Faber site:

Limited Edition Details
100 copies only | £100 | Available 01/11/2011.
All copies will be signed, numbered and slipcased.
Each copy to contain a unique bookmark made from a strip of 4, individual, passport-style photos.
Each bookmark will be signed, numbered and dated, with a hand-written message from Jarvis which reads 'mark my words'.

I take it back, the Pink diaries seem a bargain in comparison ;)

I think I will pass on that one. £100 quid for lyrics that have already been published, as a common person I just don't see the appeal there.

Don't know what time people are planning on turning up to the Sheffield signing but was at Waterstones today and they're really pushing it. Lots of huge posters and flyers everywhere. Still reiterating NO other merch to be signed but the book. I'm starting to become paranoid and just a little crazy, I'll probably turn up about 3! or is that too late? I don't know! Who else is going?

London people - what time will you be getting there? I don't know what time to go. Don't want to be ridiculously early but obviously don't want to miss out....

I'm thinking just turn up ridiculously early and be damned. You'd kick yourself if you missed him. According to littlesaint above he's only signing for an hour.

My friend and I are trying to work this out too. I have the whole day off but don't want to hang around too long. She only has the afternoon off. I was thinking 3.30 would be reasonable - don't want to spend the whole afternoon there, but on the other hand I would hate to turn up and there be a massive queue already. We'd probably not get their much earlier than 2pm but we could always go for a coffee if it is still quiet when we arrive.

Thinking about showing up for the London signing tomorrow, though I've never been to anything like this before, might sound stupid... but are you expected to buy the book from the actual store? (do they normally have enough stock for these type of things? or should I pick up a copy elsewhere and bring it with me?

I've only ever been to one book signing (Simon Pegg), but I believe you are always expected to buy the book at the store. In my case I was given a wristband once the books were purchased, and then we were allowed to get in line. No idea if that will be the case at this signing, but I'm sure they will have plenty of stock. This particular book store also had a wall of signed books from previous signings, so if anyone is feeling generous enough to pick up an extra book (to be repaid, of course), I'll add my name to the request list.  My birthday is coming up... smile.gif

I just popped up to Waterstones in Sheffield on my dinner break to check things out.

The guy I spoke to reckons that you won't be able to pose for photos (although you'll be able to get someone else to take one while your book is being signed). Jarvis will only be signing his book (although I already knew that, it's made very clear on the posters) and

They had Tony Iommi in for a 5.30 signing a week or so ago, and apparently people were queueing from 10.30am and they expect Jarvis to be busier!! It's entirely dependant on Jarvis/the book publishers as to how long he'll stay - Tony Iommi stayed and made sure that everyone in the queue got their book signed but some don't.

Finally, it doesn't sound like you'll have to buy the book instore on the day (although I will do if I go) and depending on numbers and speed they may have to limit the amount you can get signed to 2 or 3.

This is a problem for me, as I have a family gathering to attend and I won't be able to stay that late. I can get there @ 3pm but I'm not sure if that will be good enough :'(

Blimey, from 10.30!! It's a good job I'm free all day but that is ridiculous. That's just made me feel even more paranoid. Think I might have to start queing on wednesday night now. Let's see what the London queues are like.

Jazza, I fear your understanding of irony is as hazy as Alanis Morissette's... Don't they teach you no brains at that school?

Yeah, 10.30am is crackers. I'm gonna show up at three, if it's not looking like I'm reasonably close to the front (like 30 mins waiting once it starts) then I'll have to miss it.

I'll probably be able to sort someone getting me a book, but still

I've just posted about irony on fred's Loss Adjuster thread, how ironic! I think (more like I hope). This is where I show myself to be an ignoramus of the subtleties and nuances of the english literary genre, oh the shame.

I reckon fred was at one of the Tommy Iommi signings (if you don't know who he is for shame, google him). That or Dave Prowse (ditto earlier remarks). Eh, eh?

Oh , and if you're a spoon lover check out this sculpture in Sheffield Millenium Galleries

Pretty amazing, no? If you press it's buttons it kinda jingles...it's better in the flesh.

That looks impressive, I will have to pop over and take a look.

If it consists of exactly 10,000 spoons then it should be considered as irony in physical form.

Back from Foyles. I was first in the queue after Stephen who won the competition. I arrived at 3pm with my friend and we saw that there was no one in the queue so we went to the cafe for a coffee and went down at 3.40pm to queue. We were joined by a couple from Gloucester - Abi and James and a lady called Joy from Essex soon after and very slowly the queue lengthened.

By about 4.30pm the queue seemed to have stopped growing - it wasn't all that long despite Foyles staff expecting about 200 people. At 5pm they let us come into the building and divided us into two queues, one for the priority queue and another for people who'd turned up without booking a place. The priority queue turned out to be quite short - more people joined it after 5pm and the other queue lengthened considerably too.

The staff at Foyles were really helpful. The manager kept us informed of what was going on and told us that Jarvis was "a really nice bloke". He also shared around some Celebrations which was nice. At 6.30 the manager appeared with Jarvis and two ladies. The lady with red hair sat down next to Jarvis - seemed nice - could that be his girlfriend?

After Stephen got his booked signed I went forward. We were reminded that there were to be no posed photos, we told the manager that was OK because we had a system worked out. There were post-its in the books with our names. I had two books and Jarvis initially thought I was my friend who I was getting a signed book for too. That inspired a bit of chat and Jarvis' comments in my book. I then told Jarvis that I appreciated him doing the signing and he said: "Not at all. Thank you for coming."

Then he gave me my books with the post its still in. The lady with red hair said something about collecting the post its and I asked her whether she wanted mine, thinking she probably wouldn't. But she said "yes please." So I gave it to her. Don't know what they are doing with the post-its though. And that was it, so I just said thank you and possibly nice to meet you, I can't remember much after that.

Anyway. It was really nice. I tried to think of something to say or a question to ask but what I said just seemed right at the time. The book looks great and I am really pleased to not have to feel I need to ask Jarvis for an autograph if I am ever fortunate enough to bump into him again.

Hope this is useful to anyone planning to go to the Sheffield signing.
