You've asked that question so often even Jarvis must have heard it by now!

Rubbish! I've got a wedding to be in on the 27th...plus, it's a bit of a trip from the States to Sheffield to get a signed book....although if it was signed by Jarvis, it'd be worth all the money in the world to me!!

I wonder if I could pay someone that goes to either of the signings to get me a signed copy? And yes, I'm being serious.

Unless it's a particularly large Waterstones I'd imagine you'll need to arrive VERY early.

I'm not sure what sort of *early* is required.. I shall be leaving work at 4 I think (it's about a 5 in walk away).

Having met Dominic West and Clarke Peters (from The Wire) and Steve Frost from The Comedy Show Players in the last week, it will have made it a good month for s'leb spoting in Sheffield!

Well that's the problem with these things... you're bound to arrive far too early or far too late.

It's on two floors and I would expect the signing to be on the ground floor. It's pretty full of books. They had a signing in there this saturday and the sofas were arranged in the front window in between the tills and the doors. This would mean they could funnel customers through the tills so I presume buy yer book get it signed and on yer way out the day. I suppose it's quite elegant now I've thought about it.

His girlfriend asked did I want my ticket signed after he signed the book and posed for a picture. I was annoyed with myself for not bringing the Angela and Further Complications vinyl sleeves. So I imagine he'll be happy to sign more than one book as long as you don't take the piss

It does say quite clearly on the Sheffield Waterstones signing page that he will be signing ONLY copies of Mother, Brother, Lover. No other merchandise will be signed.

I doubt Jarvis is as strict but if it's only a couple more copies of the book you want signed it shouldn't be a problem then.

Cool. I'll bring my sleeve of Intro which Nick and Richard Hawley have signed just in case then. I have a setlist from a Sheffield gig which would have been good to bring but that is currently at my parents house in Gateshead.

Is it ironic that I won't be able to met Jarvis because the company he works for won't let me transfer my ticket? People who will be there: Can you try to persuade him to do another signing sometime, please?

Got this in an email today. Shame about the photos... we'll see how it works in practice. I am going with a friend so I will see if we can take pictures of each other during the signing. Hope the Sheffield people have more time.

This is to remind you that you have reserved a place in the priority queue for the EXCLUSIVE LONDON signing with Jarvis Cocker on Monday 24 October, 6.30 - 7.30 pm in the fiction department on the ground floor of Foyles, 113-119 Charing Cross Road, London, WC2H 0EB.

*PLEASE NOTE*
As Jarvis will only be signing for a very limited period of time, & as we have received lots of requests for priority booking, he will only be able to sign copies of Mother, Brother, Lover.
Jarvis won't be able to sign any other memorabilia.
Due to time constraints he won't be able pose for photographs.
Copies of the regular edition of Mother, Brother, Lover will be on sale at the event. Copies of the limited edition of Mother, Brother, Lover won't be available as publication has been put back until early November 2011.
We do recommend that you arrive early to secure a good place in the priority queue.

From the Faber & Faber site:

Limited Edition Details
100 copies only | £100 | Available 01/11/2011.
All copies will be signed, numbered and slipcased.
Each copy to contain a unique bookmark made from a strip of 4, individual, passport-style photos.
Each bookmark will be signed, numbered and dated, with a hand-written message from Jarvis which reads 'mark my words'.

I take it back, the Pink diaries seem a bargain in comparison ;)

Don't know what time people are planning on turning up to the Sheffield signing but was at Waterstones today and they're really pushing it. Lots of huge posters and flyers everywhere. Still reiterating NO other merch to be signed but the book. I'm starting to become paranoid and just a little crazy, I'll probably turn up about 3! or is that too late? I don't know! Who else is going?

My friend and I are trying to work this out too. I have the whole day off but don't want to hang around too long. She only has the afternoon off. I was thinking 3.30 would be reasonable - don't want to spend the whole afternoon there, but on the other hand I would hate to turn up and there be a massive queue already. We'd probably not get their much earlier than 2pm but we could always go for a coffee if it is still quiet when we arrive.

Thinking about showing up for the London signing tomorrow, though I've never been to anything like this before, might sound stupid... but are you expected to buy the book from the actual store? (do they normally have enough stock for these type of things? or should I pick up a copy elsewhere and bring it with me?

I've only ever been to one book signing (Simon Pegg), but I believe you are always expected to buy the book at the store. In my case I was given a wristband once the books were purchased, and then we were allowed to get in line. No idea if that will be the case at this signing, but I'm sure they will have plenty of stock. This particular book store also had a wall of signed books from previous signings, so if anyone is feeling generous enough to pick up an extra book (to be repaid, of course), I'll add my name to the request list.  My birthday is coming up... smile.gif

I just popped up to Waterstones in Sheffield on my dinner break to check things out.

The guy I spoke to reckons that you won't be able to pose for photos (although you'll be able to get someone else to take one while your book is being signed). Jarvis will only be signing his book (although I already knew that, it's made very clear on the posters) and

They had Tony Iommi in for a 5.30 signing a week or so ago, and apparently people were queueing from 10.30am and they expect Jarvis to be busier!! It's entirely dependant on Jarvis/the book publishers as to how long he'll stay - Tony Iommi stayed and made sure that everyone in the queue got their book signed but some don't.

Finally, it doesn't sound like you'll have to buy the book instore on the day (although I will do if I go) and depending on numbers and speed they may have to limit the amount you can get signed to 2 or 3.

This is a problem for me, as I have a family gathering to attend and I won't be able to stay that late. I can get there @ 3pm but I'm not sure if that will be good enough :'(

Blimey, from 10.30!! It's a good job I'm free all day but that is ridiculous. That's just made me feel even more paranoid. Think I might have to start queing on wednesday night now. Let's see what the London queues are like.

Yeah, 10.30am is crackers. I'm gonna show up at three, if it's not looking like I'm reasonably close to the front (like 30 mins waiting once it starts) then I'll have to miss it.

I'll probably be able to sort someone getting me a book, but still

Back from Foyles. I was first in the queue after Stephen who won the competition. I arrived at 3pm with my friend and we saw that there was no one in the queue so we went to the cafe for a coffee and went down at 3.40pm to queue. We were joined by a couple from Gloucester - Abi and James and a lady called Joy from Essex soon after and very slowly the queue lengthened.

By about 4.30pm the queue seemed to have stopped growing - it wasn't all that long despite Foyles staff expecting about 200 people. At 5pm they let us come into the building and divided us into two queues, one for the priority queue and another for people who'd turned up without booking a place. The priority queue turned out to be quite short - more people joined it after 5pm and the other queue lengthened considerably too.

The staff at Foyles were really helpful. The manager kept us informed of what was going on and told us that Jarvis was "a really nice bloke". He also shared around some Celebrations which was nice. At 6.30 the manager appeared with Jarvis and two ladies. The lady with red hair sat down next to Jarvis - seemed nice - could that be his girlfriend?

After Stephen got his booked signed I went forward. We were reminded that there were to be no posed photos, we told the manager that was OK because we had a system worked out. There were post-its in the books with our names. I had two books and Jarvis initially thought I was my friend who I was getting a signed book for too. That inspired a bit of chat and Jarvis' comments in my book. I then told Jarvis that I appreciated him doing the signing and he said: "Not at all. Thank you for coming."

Then he gave me my books with the post its still in. The lady with red hair said something about collecting the post its and I asked her whether she wanted mine, thinking she probably wouldn't. But she said "yes please." So I gave it to her. Don't know what they are doing with the post-its though. And that was it, so I just said thank you and possibly nice to meet you, I can't remember much after that.

Anyway. It was really nice. I tried to think of something to say or a question to ask but what I said just seemed right at the time. The book looks great and I am really pleased to not have to feel I need to ask Jarvis for an autograph if I am ever fortunate enough to bump into him again.

Hope this is useful to anyone planning to go to the Sheffield signing.

still, i got 2 books signed, they were lovely, and I went off with a smile on my face

I wasn't on the preference list but third in the non-preference queue... got there at 5:10, left at about 8:00 with two lovely signed copies.

Jarvis was pretty jaded by the time he got to us lot (who could blame him?), but it was good that he stayed on so much later than planned. Nice one!

That's nice of him. We went for a quick drink at the bar opposite after the signing and walked past Foyles at about 7.40pm. There was still loads of people waiting even then. God knows what time he finished. Would love to hear other people's stories.

I arrived at about 6:00pm (quite late compared to everyone else) and joined the priority queue. By this point the queue had nearly reached the front doors (onto Charing Cross Road). It got a little shorter after quite a few people who hadn't emailed for priority were removed from the queue and sent to the other one.

All the staff were really nice...a guy came round with post-it notes to stick in the books...I've always found the whole thing of having a post-it note with a pre-written message to give to the person doing the signing a bit strange. Surely it means nothing if you have written it yourself?

Anyway, I got to Jarvis at about 7:30pm. I wonder how conscious he was of the fact that it was time to finish and there was a still a LONG queue in front of him?

I told him that I loved the Brixton shows, but that he almost got my hopes up for a second when he mentioned "Silence". He let out a little groan and said "Oh dear...that really wouldn't have been good. I'd have to do a special separate show just for all things like that.". I couldn't resist it. I had always wanted to mention that song to him! :)

He asked if I wanted him to write anything in particular and I said that I didn't know..."I don't want to put words in your mouth. Anything is great.".

He wrote "Leo...things go better with a little bit of razzmatazz. Love Jarvis.". I wonder how many people got that message? Was that his default quote to write down whenever he couldn't think of anything specific, or was he just picking some of his favourites at random maybe?

But anyway...was fun. Felt a bit greedy though. I got a copy of his last album signed in person too. Maybe I should retire gracefully now.

Who's going to the Sheffield signing tomorrow? I will be there.

I am, although don't know what time to go for...

I'm either going to miss Uni and go quite early to judge the queue, or go to my first lecture and go in the afternoon

What time are you thinking of going?

Can someone at the Sheffield signing please ask if there will be any American shows next year?

I'm gonna head down town earlyish to scope things out. I originally was gonna head over about 3 but I'm thinking I might get there earlier. I'll go to an art gallery if nothings happening.

It's probably gonna be unlikely but I may be able to. I will certainly try to post.

Well, as of 2:15 there are about 10 or so people waiting outside Waterstones in the queue. One thing it does say is that you must buy your book before you start queuing so bear that in mind. I don't think I'd like to be at the front anyway, it's all over far too quickly. A little bit of queuing is good for the soul in situations like these. I won't be able to post again until I get back home so for anyone who turns up this afternoon good luck.

Live report from the queue - just arrived and got ticket number 248! We are in the outside bit of the queue, they're saying that there's no guarantee of meeting Jarv for us latecomers. Fingers crossed...

In the time it took me to post that, another 20 people have joined the queue, and they're not handing out any more tickets...

Just got back from the signing and, guess what, I couldn't think of anything to say. So he offered me a grape. The I didn't know whether to eat the grape of just hold it as we were still talking. Told him when I'd first seen them and he said 'What was I wearing? I wasn't wearing that stupid rabbit coat was I?' I told him he wasn't and then said how important Pulp had been to me. He signed my book, no special inscription :( I had ticket number 13 so I probably saw you blueowl. I was upstairs when he arrived with his girlfriend and their dog, a cute jack russell, and they looked soaked through, been pissing it down here today. It was all over in the blink of an eye but the time I spent in the queue was brilliant. Was queuing next to two young girls who had Jarvis setlist from Leeds, they were remarking on his handwritten notes on it. One of the notes was about the Heineken festival in 95 so I told them I ahd been at that show and one of the girls said 'I was two'. There were some moments when I felt very old in that queue!

Admittedly half the songs on Eggs are shit. But the ones written by the big man himself are good and a couple of others are alright... One with baby bird and one with a woman making innuendos about erectile dysfunction.

Number 9 in the queue, got there way too early, totally knackered right now
My awkward conversation with the big man went something like this

Me: Hi
Jarvis: Hello
Me: How's it going?
Jarvis: Not too bad, pretty good yeah...
Me: A bit wet...
Jarvis: Well we set off from London at 1 so you know...
Me: It's so strange seeing you in person...I've been a Pulp fan all my life...
Jarvis: Oh right...Well...Take a biscuit then!
Me (picking up complimentary biscuit): haha okay then...see you later then!
Jarvis: Yeah bye!

Quote in my book says: To Joe, Mind how you go, *squiglly line* Jarvis

Can anyone decipher the small cluster of letters after the "Jarvis" of his signature? I noticed he did the same in a friend's copy, but he didn't seem to on an earlier sample I have from a few years back. Could it be an "oxo" (i.e. hug, kiss, hug)? Or something else? Is anyone's legible?

I thought it was the ''i'' and the ''s'' on mine.

Like the ''J'' and the line afterwards made up the ''Jarv'' part of his name.

You could be right too though

That was great, had a chat about Jack Russels with his girlfriend and then talked to Jarvis about becoming a dad. I was really impressed by how he took his time to think about what to say to me, I didn't feel rushed at all. And he offered me a grape!

Did you make him agree to an interview? Did he explain why he wouldn't be interviewed for the book? Has he read the book? I know... too many questions...

I was literally right behind you then! I didn't have a lot to say either.. I said 'alright!' and shook his hand. He didn't put anything special in my book, but he wrote something in french for my girlfriends mum (who lives in normandy) and he offered me a snack - I took a grape :)

A very good day, I was out of Waterstones by 17.55 or so! Although I could have done without getting up at 6 so I could start/finish work early!

Made it to the Foyles signing on Monday straight into the priority queue!! was so weird seeing him, actually started to feel kinda nervous as I got closer to the front... can't really remember what I said? but he made a jokey comment about my name being 'Oliver' so he signed my copy "Oliver, You deserve more - Jarvis"

Really pleased I managed to get it done, so a big thanks to all the guys on this forum who posted the info!

I wasn't about to get on his back about interviews and stuff. Apart from anything else I was number 248 in the line and he was still managing to maintain good humour, so I didn't want to risk rocking the boat! When I told him who I was he said he'd read a few bit of it and he thought it was "quite accurate", then he signed the book "Here's to Truth & Beauty... love Jarvis". Good enough for me.

Yeah, probably a good plan not to berate him. When you do the sequel or update to TaB and ask him for an interview or foreword maybe he'll remember what a delightful chap you are and say yes!

I was a little ahead of those two blokes, got paired up with a lovely mum with kids at the same school as my son. Those teen girls were very...excitable! Do you know if they got their setlist signed? Oh, and it wasn't me who tore their setlist. Still it was great to see that Pulp/Jarvis can still attract new fans, he's old enough to be their dad by a long way.

hehe, no I was one of the two blokes you're referring to just behind the two girls!

What I meant was that when we were upstairs and Jarvis walked in, there were only 2 men in the crowd in front of me. You must have been the taller chap in a longish coat and red/brown hair (I think?).

They told me that after they'd got the set list @ Leeds festival, some other girl got jealous and decided to try and tear it in half as she'd missed out - horrible behaviour. I'm not sure if they got it signed, I was a bit distracted by that point as I was near the front of the queue as they went up.

This has been puzzling me as well. I've had it upside down, on it's side ven the right way up, but as of this moment have no idea what that cryptic arrangement of lines is. Quality isn't great but anyone have any ideas?

That sounds like me. God, it was nerve wracking waiting to go and have the book signed wasn't it? I'm a grown man for goodness sake!
