To be fair to Morrissey, the majority of the people on the forum seem like compete dicks. Seems like 'lilikoi' is a bit of a fan trying to conceal it badly. Appears to have heard all albums including early ones as well as having read Truth and Beauty :P And Dominic/Fred I will never be able to look at that photo without laughing now!
I like The Smiths/ Morrissey - Nice music and lyrics. Even if they are a bit glum at times, the sarcasm is their style (besides it's not like Pulp songs are all happy) and although his views are pretty extreme, at least he has views (which are sort of thought provoking and potentially interesting)
Anyway Jarvis played a William, it was really nothing on the Sunday Service once so presumably he doesn't hate them. I remember because he thought it went 'would you like to marry me, and would you like a library' and had to stop it halfway when he realised he was wrong - I don't know how he managed to hear that!
I read Jarvis saying he simply resented the Smiths as it was the 80s, they were from the North, doing something vaguely similar, yet way more successful (at the time). I don't recall him saying anything negative about the actual music.
I like Morrissey's music, & I find his voice & emotional performance very engaging live. But I genuinely couldn't give a sh*t if Morrissey & Pulp like eachother or not. I sometimes find Morrissey's outbursts quite disturbing, like many of you seem to, but when you're artistic, politiaclly-motivated & a bit of a loner/hermit it's bound to happen.
Having said that, I've never owned a Morrissey/Smiths T-shirt largely because of said outbursts...
I certainly could care less whether Morrissey likes Pulp or vice versa, I was more wondering if I was attracted to both performers because, although very different from each other, they share a similar style of stagecraft. The continually walk that tightrope between genius and flat on your face failure. It's interesting that they nearly alwys get it right. I say nearly cos Jarvis fell over on his ass at Auto during Sunrise's freakout.
I kind of agree with you, they both give so much live, but (not wanting to slate him really) Morrissey is somewhat more pretentious. Jarvis will play live & give 100% of what he HAS, whereas Morrissey will only play if he feels he can give 100% of what he's capable of. I think Morrissey doesn't really get that people can't be messed around on dates, 'cos we have to work! Morrissey tries to live in his own ideology, whereas Jarvis (& Russell) live here on Earth.
I think Jarvis has lightened up as far as his opinions on Mozza and the Smiths go. As well as the song mentioned above he dedicated Unhappy Birthday to David Cameron last week and I'm sure he played a solo Moz song once
On Morrissey's birthday he played Everyday is Like Sunday and a voice clip of how he is no longer Morrissey - singer of the The Smiths any more and that he will never be again since that is all the past
I love Morrissey and I love Pulp. But who is better? Only one way to find out - FIGHT! Actually I think that joke may have already been done on here before. Bit seriously I have undying respect and admiration for Morrissey. That doesn't mean I necessarily share all his opinions, but then who does share all the opinions of anybody else, and you've got bear in mind that a lot of what you read in the press about Morrissey is hyped-up, exaggerated or just plain rubbish. Morrissey bashing in the music press has always been rife and the story of searching fans for meat on the way into gigs is probably the biggest load of rubbish of the lot. It probably boils down to a security guard having a bit of a joke with some fans on the way in. A no-brainer all round.
I've had the misfortune to be at two Morrissey concerts that were pulled once underway, and as I witnessed the circumstances first hand, I have no criticism at all over his reasons for not continuing. The second time it happened I was down the front, and saw him collapse on stage right before my eyes, and have to be stretchered off. Definitely not a tantrum or him pulling a sickie. In fact it was quite disturbing to watch, and as we didn't know why it had happened until the next morning, I spent all night wondering if I may have just witnessed Morrissey's final curtain. But even then, half the crowd of selfish idiots were booing and moaning on the way out about their precious wasted time and money. Of course it's disappointing, but in the real word people do get sick. It may be not such a big problem to soldier on and go into work with a cold and a sore throat when you work in an office, but imagine having to go on stage and give it your all in front of thousands when you feel like shit and sound like a frog. If he'd gone on stage and given a poor performance under these circumstances, all the moaners and whingers would have had plenty to say about that too. Much better to cancel and give a refund (which on both occasions I got). And if you've spent hundreds of pounds on travelling and hotels, you should know nothing in life comes with a gaurentee.
So I think it is fair to say I am equally passionate about Morrissey and Pulp. However, in my eyes there is one big difference - in the unlikely event I was ever given the choice, I would marry Jarvis, but not absolutely not Morrissey :) (hopefully putting a smiley after that comment will make me appear less delusional)
I remember reading this thread on a Moz site which says that they apparently shared a flight into Dublin on Aer Lingus and spoke a lot on the flight...
My views on Moz are probably much like Twiggy's but then it seems those kind of antics are part of the appeal for some of his fans. He's ok. Think they're very different.
I like Morrissey and I like Jarvis Cocker... But which one is best? There's only one way to find out... FIIIIIIGHT!
I'm not going to bother reading that thread. They are pretty savage on MorrisseySolo. They even slag off Morrissey loads and aren't very polite to one another. I'm going to stay here on this nice little polite and well mannered message board thank you!
Whilest I'm here - I think I might mention my best mate is getting married in the morning. I'm on best man duties for the day - but I reckon they may be the first couple ever to have their first dance to 'Bar Itailia'. How sweet!
Has Jarvis really slagged off Morrissey? I've read a crazy amount of Pulp interviews over the years (hence my constant 'Steve said this is 1998'-esque comments) and I don't ever remember him saying anything derogatory. They're both pretty similiar people and performers - and for the record can BOTH can be pretty self-absorbed at their worst. Plus the first Jarvis album sounded soo much like Morrissey to me the first time I heard it. I think they're both avid music fans as well as musicians, and probably have a kind of begrudging respect/pointed opinions about each others work rather than actual dislike; It reminds me of some comments I read of the Manic Street Preachers talking about how they prefered pre-hardcore Pulp or something, and Jarvis made similiar remarks about the Manics.
Anet - did Morrissey really collapse on stage? When was this? I saw him a few years back on a rescheduled show he originally canceled due to throat issues and he sounded AMAZING playing just a month or two later. Plus, so much stage energy for a guy knocking on fifty. Oh, and he took off his shirt about three times if that interests anyone. :)

Ok, I'm not Anet but yes he did collapse at Swindon 2009 just after the end of the first song, This Charming Man. There used to be video of it, it is quite shocking, but it seems to have been removed.

It was very shocking to witness it first hand, and it made me very angry to hear all the idiots further back booing.
On the subject of Morrissey's shirt changes, I am the proud owner of three pieces of Morrissey's shirts (including an entire sleeve), gained by getting stuck in to the huge scrum that goes up when he lobs them into the crowd. It's probably the most fun I've ever had in terms of an adrenalin rush, as you have to be prepared to almost die to get a piece. My only complaint is they smelt like the perfume counter in department store, indicating that Morrissey's vanity forbids him to ever let his fans know that he stinks of sweat after 90mins on stage.
