A small curiosity:

I recently spotted on eBay a promo CD sampler issued by Universal/Island on 30 May 2001. This of course was some time before We Love Life came out, and indeed it pre-dates the earliest version of the finished album in promo form by nearly 2 months. The track listing - just under the heading PULP - was as follows:

1. Weeds
2. Sunrise
3. Trees
4. Minnie Timperly
5. Bad Cover Version

It's interesting that the CD picks out 3 of the tracks that would ultimately be singles... along with the other 2 that really should have been!

Anyway, the unique thing is that, since 'Weeds' doesn't segue into 'The Origin of the Species' here, the final chord plays out fully, with an extra 3 seconds of fade-out! FLAC and MP3 copies of this complete, stand-alone version of 'Weeds' are in the BarItalia2007 account now.

Enjoy!

Nice, thanks for the upload. But -I may be missing something here- was Weeds a single? I really liked Origin of the Species- it sounded like a welcome Jarv/Steve effort.

Are there any differences in the other versions of the songs?

Hawalius said that three of the five songs became singles: bad cover version and trees/sunrise as a double a side. Weeds was never a single.

Weeds was earmarked to be a double A side with Minnie

I remember a lot of speculation about weeds being a single. I still say the birds in your garden should have been a single.

That rings a bell... Jarvis on accoustic guitar?

That's right - a very beautiful acoustic version!

For the record, the other tracks on this promo were just the same as the album versions, although they were probably smartened up a little for the finished CD; these versions sound ever so slightly heavier on the bass when compared side-by-side, and they're all much quieter (greater dynamic range but overall a lot quieter - the final album was probably blasted through a volume enhancer). Definitely the same mixes and edits, though.

A double-A of Weeds/Minnie? That would have been a bit uninspiring really.

What does everyone think of weeds II? I think it had potential to be something really special, but it goes on a bit and I tend to skip it.

As for Birds on Ross - is that on a yahoo account?

Not a fan of "Weeds II." Probably my least favorite song on WLL, an album I think I like more than a lot of people (though I recognize it is not their best work).

I really like Weeds II, but I think it makes a rather damp track 2 and spoils the start of the album a bit.

Weeds II was probably my favorite. Haven't heard the album for years. They could've done some interesting remixes with that.

I missed Jarvis on Jonathan Ross all those years ago. He did an interview didn't he. I'd like to see it if anyone knows if it's on the internet somewhere.

Weeds II is worth it alone for the line, "Do your dance, do your funny little dance."

I think I uploaded the audio of the interview to one of the Bar Italia accounts, but not sure which.

You're all mad! "Weeds II" single-handledly spoils the album for me.

As for "Weeds" being a single, well, to me, it's the "Glory Days" of the "We Love Life" album (i.e. a potential hit single if anyone was interested in such a thing) and really should have been a single.

No, sorry I completely disagree. Weeds II is a natural fit on the album as far as I'm concerned, it is also very Pulp. WLL is just a brilliant album and it's such a shame it didn't seem to fit in with the general public at the time. I wouldn't be exagerrating to say it's my second favourite Pulp album, listen to it all the way through without any problem unlike DC and TIH.

I love Weeds II too and can't really understand the hostility it gets - it's just a good spoken-word piece, riffing off the "freaks" and "mis-shapes" in Pulp's past, some very good wordplay in there and the backing is moody and effective, but mainly stays out of the way of the words.

We Love Life singles should've been, in order;

1. Sunrise
2. Minnie Timperley
3. The Birds In Your Garden
4. Weeds

For me, Sunrise, Bad Cover Version, and Minnie were perfect - Birds would have flunked badly if released as a single

Further to my assumption that all the other tracks on this promo were the same mixes... I've just discovered this might not be the case!

Sunrise for some reason wasn't copying from my We Love Life CD the other day, so, unlike the other tracks, I didn't actually do a direct side-by-side comparison of the promo vs the album - I just played it through my hi-fi and judged it to be the same version, and as Minnie, The Trees and Bad Cover Version checked out exactly the same against their album equivalents, and as Weeds was identical, too, apart from its final note, I thought nothing could possibly be different with Sunrise. But I was just playing the promo disc through a different set of speakers and was surprised to hear the choir in Sunrise sounded a bit louder than normal...

I'm fairly convinced that the choir are louder during the loud and crazy instrumental sections, and then much *quieter* in the slow section between the two instrumental bits - on the album mix they come in loud and clear, but on the promo mix they're very quiet and you don't really hear them clearly again until the instrumental goes wild. I thought for a while that it might just be the result of the entire track being processed for loudness for the final album mix, but I've come to think it's too different to be explained away.

The mix is in the BarItalia2007 Yahoo account for you to judge (only as MP3 this time - the FLAC is too large to upload there). Am I going mad and imagining things? Or is this a very slightly different mix?

x

I can indeed.

Though I promise, I checked them all thoroughly and there's no differences in the others. Sunrise was the only one I couldn't compare side-by-side the other day.

MP3s heading up now.

Thats the alternate version of Sunrise - it was produced on a promo german cd along with a radio edit of Trees and all the other We Love Life tracks. It IS indeed a different mix.

As far as I know, its only been produced for the one promo - so to hear of it being on a second promo is quite a surprise - any chance of a scan of the covers etc? I wonder why this mix was scrapped in favour of the album mix?

I imagine this was the original mix, and that it was perfected/finished for the final album. This promo is after all dated way ahead of the release date.

Hmmmm. I've always theorized that Weeds & Weeds II was once one single song, and at the last minute they decided it was too long so split it into two. This is complete conjecture, mind you, and the fact that Weeds is stand-alone with a definitive ending point on this promo kinda debunks that. As for the latter half, I always liked it, it was sort've a throwback to the more dancey/house era of Separations that they kinda drifted away from at the time of WLL, y'know?

I still can't hear any difference between the two versions of Babies, so I'm not even going to bother downloading this new version of Sunrise!

Yes, that was wonderful!! I was really hoping they'd do it at one of the Brixton nites.

Just Jarvis & Candida.
