As promised on another thread: give me your top 12 Pulp related albums out of this list:
It
Freaks
Masters Of The Universe
Separations
Intro
His N Hers
Different Class
This Is Hardcore
We Love Life
A Heavy Nite With Relaxed Muscle
The Jarvis Cocker Record
"Further Complications"
- that's all the main studio albums and non-album singles compilations. There's 12 of them. You put them in order 1-12 with 1 your favourite and 12 your least favourite. I'll then (beacuse I'm wonderful and generous with my time - and a bit sad) do the maths assigning 12 points to number 1 rating, 11 to number 2 (you get the idea - bit like eurovision) and announce the official ranking amongst decerning Pulp fans.
I know you won't be but try not to be swayed by anyone elses list.
you have until 11/11/11 - that's a Friday. That's a nice easy date for everyone to remember because it's Chanelle from Big Brother's birthday... oh, and all the ones!

mmm, what I mean is I spread the 1-12 marks around as I didn't think Intro should get much less than His n Hers and should get far more than Freaks. More a relative ranking.
You've still got plenty of time. But I don't want the thread to disappear onto page two!
I like to think you've all been arranging and rearranging lists because it's a great responsibility to get it right.
11/11/11
I wish the poll was limited to Pulp albums only...it's hard enough to rank just the Pulp albums, I find myself unable to consider the solo/side project albums on the same scale...
1. Different Class 2. This Is Hardcore 3. His'n'Hers 4. We Love Life 5. Intro 6. Further Complications 7. Separations 8. Jarvis 9. Masters of the Universe 10. A Heavy Nite With... 11. Freaks 12. It

Interestingly, if we were going by the ''deluxe versions'' I think I'd have TIH as first and perhaps HnH second...WLL could even fare the best if we ever get to hear the many lost songs from that era. DC would be lower on a lot of lists I reckon due to the relative lack of extras in terms of b-sides and demos from that era because of its shorter period of creation than the others. It can't be a coincidence that the one album that Pulp got spot-on tracklist wise was the one which had the least amount of time to fret over production and quality of songs.
Because I think 'Further Complications' needs defending a bit. Personally I love it and it was getting this that started me on the long, slow road back to full Pulp love again!
Different Class Freaks Separations We Love Life Masters Of The Universe His N Hers This Is Hardcore Intro "Further Complications" A Heavy Nite With Relaxed Muscle It The Jarvis Cocker Record
I'll leave the sides of albums poll to you, although Separations is probably the only other Pulp album with a split personality? In fact the only other such album I can think of full stop is Abbey Road...
As for Venini, and I hope you take this in the best possible humour: fuck off!
haha, well it's not me who is making the 'what is your 5th favourite song from Separations' threads or whatever Dammit I like it when Pulp songs aren't ordered!

In any case when I did try to do this, I ended up with a list and realised I missed out Different Class and His N Hers - Dunno why, but I suppose I take it for granted that they're brilliant because they are the most commercial (I am spoilt!). The fact remains that grading Pulp songs / albums is pretty much futile because it will only change the next day!

Okay, I'm going to try. But I'll probably change my mind in an hour & a half.
1 This Is Hardcore (9) 2 Freaks (8.5) 3 His N Hers (8.5) 4 Different Class (8) 5 Further Complications (8) 6 A Heavy Nite (7.5) 7 Seperations (7) 8 Jarvis (7) 9 Intro (7) 10 It (6) 11 MOTU (6) 12 We Love Life (6)*
Everything after the first four are quite interchangable with mood.
*I LOVE the songs on this album, but the recordings themselves leave far, far too much to be desired.
Sorry I dont have the Jarvis solo albums so didnt want to include them. I know they are not as good as the Pulp albums though, so you can add them at the end with your ratings if you like.
Well Ive heard bits and pieces of all of them online and they were ok but not on the level of Pulp. I'll listen to them all a few times on Spotify and edit my post afterwards then
1. This Is Hardcore 2. Different Class 3. His N Hers 4. Intro 5. Separations 6. We Love Life 7. It 8. Freaks 9. Masters Of The Universe 10. The Jarvis Cocker Record 11. "Further Complications" 12. A Heavy Nite With Relaxed Muscle
Ok, I felt the time was about right to register my list.
1 Intro 2 His n hers 3 We Love Life 4 Separations 5 This Is Hardcore 6 "Further Complications" 7 Relaxed Muscle 8 Different Class 9 The Jarvis Cocker Record 10 Masters of the Universe 11 Freaks 12 It
Honourable Mentions - I might note that if the bonus discs of the deluxe editions had been valid contenders then the His n Hers bonus disc would be in 2nd place on that list. I also realised that just because the early stuff is at the bottom it doesn't mean I don't like it I just don't listen to it.
Why do people hate on Intro? I think it's absolutely brilliant. It seems to consistantly come in the second half of peoples charts. It's beyond me (shakes head and walks away).
Well it's a tough start with Space, taking half an hour to reach a bad joke followed by a bit of (admittedly brilliant) music, Babies is on HnH, S:SC goes on a bit, IS:ASITP is only 2/3 brilliant 1/3 a cat being strangled. That only leaves you with 5 songs. Barely an album.
After I wrote my post I thought about it and...Intro was the second most popular album for Pulp songs on the recent reunion tour (I Think?). 5 of the 9 tracks were played on the tour. in this poll Intro was my number one. I had to choose it because when I got into Pulp Lipgloss had just come out so the first album I bought by them was Intro. There simply weren't any other options, all I could do was listen to it over and over again. I sometimes try and work out how many times I've heard O.U.; I think it must be in the thousands but it's never enough!
Am I alone in thinking that Razzmatazz is better played live - I really like it but I always expect it to be faster than it is and so whenever I hear it it feels a bit like it is dragging
Hmmm, I disagree slightly. I always felt that Razzamtazz was quite clumsy live, certainly when Russell was playing it alone. Bless him that slide guitar part defeats him every time. I also think it misses the echoey piano part in the intro which is often replaced by bass guitar live. Same with Lipgloss, always seemed to cause problems live, but then again that song does have magic in it's DNA.

I read that as you contradicting yourself. You prefer the live versions even though it sounds like it drags?
I agree about the dragging it out live, (with crowd participation handclaps at the Pulp shows I saw this summer) and I far prefer the energy of the recorded version. To which producer Phil Vinal contributed considerably (taking Ed Buller's original couple of goes at producing the song before doing it himself and remixing Razzmatazz).
I wonder why Pulp didn't do more recordings with him. His'n'Hers might have had less reverb...Luke Haines, ever the curmudgeon, mentioned in his Britpop memoir how annoyed he was that ''his producer'', Vinall, had worked with Pulp and helped make a great record in Razzmatazz.

Four wasn't it? OU, Babies, Razzmatazz and Sheffield Shag City.

I can't see any contradictions - when I listen to the record (not live), the opening part before the singing just seems a bit heavy, like it's a bit of a challenge to get to the next beat. Just the opening bars - when the singing starts then it's much more dynamic. If it drags when being played live I didn't notice, probably being too excited to actually care!
This is an impossible task. Far too many variables to consider, such as my mood at the time and what mood I would like to be in - ie lidicrously high and dancing around the house, wallowing in self-pity, or just having a bit of quiet introspection. The most I can probably say is that Different Class MIGHT be my number 1, as it has the most potential to do all three of the above.
I agree. This is too hard. This is Hardcore is probably my favourite album but I don't think it's their best. And Different Class has such a special place in my heart...but Separations is probaby my second favourite.
I think Jarvis was a lot better than Further Complications though. I don't think I can properly rank the albums without feeling like I've betrayed one of them.

No they fought for the right to be able to make their own decisions which means not participating if that is their decision! Maybe the ladies are just too frightened to make an actual choice, indecisiveness. I thought it would be difficult too but I actually found it rather fun. I followed an intuitive path and let the records chooes themselves. I found that after I'd finished my exercise in automatic writing that my subconscious mind had made the right decisions. Hallelujah.
This is turning into a male only poll... Did the Suffragettes fight for nothing?
If you think this will make me want to vote now, it's not working! I reserve the right to waffle, skirt around the issue and not commit to anything at all.
Debatable... Although I am tempted to go back to it to see why some people love it.
One trend I noticed was the amount of times TIH was second in peoples lists.
If there's demand I'll be happy to update the figures from time to time if new people submit lists.
MOTU is one of those albums that takes a long time to get into, but once you do it never gets boring. Its challenging but there's so much depth. Freaks has some of the greatest Pulp songs too (Being Followed Home) but as an album doesnt work as well for me. Fairground and Never Ending Story are pretty uncomfortable to listen to.
Believe me, I've listened to MOTU way more times than a lot of albums I do like, just because it's Pulp. It's Jarvis and FC that need the love. Big Julie and INeverSIWDeep are two of the best songs he's done, and plenty of other songs on both albums are up there too.
