You might all be aware of this but there's a yahoo account baritalianotpulp (mouthful - sorry) and password pulpnotpulp.
Any music that you'd like to share, bring it here.
Some rules:
1 no more than one song per artist
2 no more than one song per person per week - just to stop us drowning in music.
3 the less well known the artist the better.
Any other rules welcome.
Deffo! I'll listen to your song later when I get in.
4. Use this thread to discuss the songs
5. Put your username from this site on the email so we know who posted it.
I was a little put off by the less well-known the artist the better. Sounds like a recipe for competitiveness over who has the most obscure musical tastes!
Oh sorry, no. I was just trying to avoid songs we've probably heard already appearing. I put a song by Ms. Dynamite's brother and a song by THe Magnetic Fields who are actually quite well know.
Nah - biatch is fine. I know what I am! I just have a bit of a bee in my bonnet about people getting all superior because they like artists no one else has ever heard of. I know that sometimes it's because they are too good for the mainstream, but sometimes it's just cos they are shit!
Sorry, didn't mean it as a personal criticism, I was just having a minor toddler tantrum cos I couldn't I wanted to join in but couldn't think of anything that fitted the bill. I tend to like songs that are by well known bands, but the lesser known material, so I suppose that's kind of a compromise?

It's the bands name. Neigungsgruppe actually means something like "special interest group" but other than that, yeah. It's a pretty cool group though, with both my favourit violinist and my favourite radio presenter being part of it. It started off as a sort of art project with reading and music but I guess they decided to make a band from this in the end. I think their first song was a cover of Fuck Forever

hmm I listened to a few songs by the Magnetic Fields (dunno who uploaded that) - If I were to buy an album of theirs which would be a good one to start off with?
It's hard to say: The song I put on is from I - it's a good album but few of the songs are as good as I don't believe you and I thought you were my boyfriend (all the songs start with the letter I! Tracks run in alphabetical order! How's that for an album concept? Bit ropey actually...)
My favourite (and I haven't got them all) is 69 Love Songs. Which is a triple album - bit daunting but the first CD's fantastic and I'm just starting to discover the other two CD's are rather good as well.
Whether you buy the CD or download it, it's much cheaper on Amazon than iTunes (Amazon UK at least).
If you're looking to download some choice tracks:
The One You Really Love Too Drunk To Dream All My Little Words The Dada Polka If You Don't Cry The Luckiest Guy On The Lower East Side The Book Of Love I Thought You Were My Boyfriend Epitaph For My Heart I Think I Need A New Heart Meaningless Papa Was A Rodeo
I was starting to think it was just me and Clodia bothered about this musical exchange...
Okay cheers, will buy the CD because it just seems a bit silly to me buying mp3 files - I'd much rather spend a few extra quid (or in this case it's the same price) for a hard copy. I've been listening to some of the music that's been posted but this is the first chance that I've really had to sit down and listen - Thos Henley is also good! Sorry I haven't uploaded anything but like Anet said I can't really think of any music I like that's not well-known but I'll have a think about it and maybe come up with something
I uploaded the Good the Bad and the Queen which is probably known to everyone here (sorry) but the music I'm into isn't exactly of my generation so I have no grasp of how well known a band is (or was) - all I know is that my friends haven't heard of them, which isn't really saying much since quite a lot of them haven't even heard of pulp either!
Never heard if Pulp?! The folly of youth... Actually I'm only just becoming aware of people who were big just three or four years before Pulp (I was 12 when mis-shapes came out - didn't know what the fuss was over common people!) such as The Stone Roses and Inspiral Carpets (who's name at first put me off), if someone had put This Is How It Feels by IC on yahoo a couple of months ago they'd have blown my tiny mind.

AND I Don't Want to Get Over You!!! That song breaks my heart every single time!
I was one when common people came out (I say indignantly :P) though I have to say personally I don't see the appeal of eminem but I'm liking Inspiral Carpets!

My older brothers were into rap when I was just getting into music, but thankfully one was into Inspiral Carpets - Biggest Mountain was my 15 year old "Ironing my shirt getting ready to go out!" track... Can't say I'm into the long outro, but this was such a fine summer night song:

For the record, I was 16 when Common People came out, and feel quite lucky for that... Just discovering going out, good music at the time, leaving school and the best, hottest, longest summer holidays ever! (To kinda paraphrase Sturdy's book, or Steve in his top X records list - can't quite remember, but I do remember the quote about that Summer resonating)

I feel a bit uncomfortable with this thread. I wanna contribute but I can never think of the right song or artist to feature, it makes me feel...funny inside; slightly sick. Anyway, I really wanna contribute
I really loved The Auteurs in the early/mid 90's. It's a start I suppose.
I suspect I'll probably go a bit mad on here now. Sorry in advance. I just remembered Stereolab, in my opinion if you like Pulp you'll like Stereolab. Here's their classic track French Disko done on The Word (god I loved The Word).
Check out that Farfisa & Moog, they were a stunning live band too.

If you were a president, you'd be Weirdo Roosevelt.
Oh that's cruel fred. I saw them play on their 'breakthrough' tour at the Leadmill. I enjoyed them rather, it was only spoiled by having to stand next to Caitlin Moran. She was writing their first piece for NME, they had a double page centre spread the next week!
aha not yet, I'm a bit strapped for cash so I bought the Inspiral Carpets ('life') instead which I'm really enjoying! Magnetic Fields are next on the agenda though
I wrote most of the wiki entry on Menswear. Not a great boast, I was just on there in about 2004, looking for bands that hadn't been written about yet. They weren't a great band, but they seem to have caught the worst of the britpop backlash. Stardust (along with a few others) is just a great pop song. The second album is really for completists only. It's straight up, irony-free country rock, and only two or three tracks are any good.
ok. does it actually have 69 songs on it? sounds like a bit of a stupid question but 22dreams by Paul Weller only has 21 songs (which annoys me greatly)
First, I like Magnetic Fields thanks for recommending them - I have focused on the first CD and most of the songs are great (although there are some which I'm not so sure about). Second, (I think) this is an absolutely amazing song from a few years ago
It's from Brian Eno and David Byrne's 2nd album Everything That Happens Will Happen Today (but wait there's a link with pulp... produced in part by Leo Abrahams and I believe Jarvis played uncredited guitar on the title track - also very good - during one performance)
Also, the audience is ridiculous in this video

I've heard a few songs by him but never investigated beyond the songs I've heard on compilations.
A quick search for him on iTunes reveals The Hearts A Lonely Hunter, UB Jesus (both great) and um, It's Alright by Jay-Z which must sample something by him and Brian Eno.
I still pray for the day when a rapper samples a Pulp song, just to see how it turns out.
Incidentally I've just put another song on the account, don't let the title put you off.
Glad you like 69 Love Songs. I've deleted Bunny Rabbits, Fido, Fucking Romantic and Punk Love from disc one on my iTunes library - they're not worth listening to. Do you like The One You Really Love?
I quite like Fido, but I agree with you about the rest of the ones mentioned. Yeah, The One You Really Love is great but I think The Book of Love is my favourite.
Yeah, that's why I wrote comedy gold in the email.
Got to admit my ignorance of Talking Heads although I have heard of them (shameful I know) - anyway your what? 17? How have you discovered all these people? You have my respect.
Ahh, sorry I didn't actually read the email - it was comedy gold
Talking Heads are amazing! - definitely 2nd favourite band after Pulp! This is Life During Wartime from Stop Making Sense (Jarvis isn't the only one with some moves )
I have to admit my music taste is largely due to me sharing my dad's itunes account and Talking Heads really stood out everytime it came up on shuffle
