I like the (probably) more obvious bands: Blur, Eels, Moloko, Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, The Divine Comedy, The Magnetic Fields (although weirdly I didn't come to TMF as a result of being a fan of TDC, but through hearing I Don't Believe You on a CD that came with a mag)
I also like some people who are less obvious, I'm very into rap: MF Doom, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Nas, Akala - a world away from Pulp but with one obvious connection - wordplay with a sense of humour and a certain darkness.
I like some dance music (which is good because JC's dance based side projects are stacking up): Hot Chip, Scratch Perverts (mixing dance, hip hop and songs by the likes of radiohead and ian brown into mixtapes), The Avalanches, Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip.
Other notable artists in my collection: Johnny Cash (I know JC's also a fan) and Me First and The Gimme Gimme's (not really into sk8 punk or whatever you call it but they really know how to rework a classic song), Sparks and (risking credibility) I own every Eminem album!
Anyone else got any potentially unexpected musical tastes?
Making no effort to separate obvious & not: Syd barrett/early Floyd, Xtrmntr-era Primal Scream, Suede, Marilyn Manson, Divine Comedy, Nobuo Uematsu, My Chemical Romance, Cradle Of Filth, Madness, Motorhead, Blur, Beatles, Franz, Morrissey/Smiths, Doors, Shampoo, Placebo of the top of my head...
prince, of montreal, long blondes, beatles stones, kinks, who, jimi hendrix, david bowie, neil young, george clinton/parliament/funkadelic, smashing pumpkins, fairport convention/steeleye span/pentangle and other british folkrock, blur, boo radleys, elastica, suede, placebo, kaleidoscope, elvis, dEUS, dutch indie bands (excelsior label), wannadies, belle & sebastian, elephant 6 bands, byrds, pixies, sonic youth, the muffs, radiohead, r.e.m., smiths, and lots others.
way too many actually. Pulp is in my top 10, but that top 10 is different everyday. Prince is always #1 and of Montreal is #2 much of the time.
Some (perhaps) less obvious likes: Beulah, Bauhaus/Peter Murphy, The Small Faces, The Airborne Toxic Event, Beach House, The Bird & the Bee, Black Keys, Jimmy Eat World, The Supremes, Irving, Adele, The Killers, Matt & Kim, Modest Mouse, Pixies, Stevie Wonder, Tegan & Sara, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Death Cab for Cutie, Dashboard Confessional...though looking at most of these bands I think my musical tastes have largely been shaped by my love for Pulp...
Tegan & Sarah - I loved the White stripes (I forgot about the White stripes!) cover of walking with a ghost by them and always meant to investigate further but never did. Where should I start?
Sort of became interested in Prince when I bought Useless Trinkets by Eels (collection of rarities) which featured two live covers of his songs - if I was your girlfriend and I could never take the place of your man, problem was I preferred the eels covers! Apologies.
And someone said soundtracks? I'm intrigued. The only soundtracks I ever listened to much were Trainspotting and the wickerman.
Seems I may be alone round these parts for my love of rap? (or American rap at least, I'm counting the streets) I spotted a bit of alt dance though.
You all need to listen to Gazzillion Ear by MF Doom, there's even a Thom Yorke remix if that makes it more palatable.
All sorts, but I particularly love The Shins, Sparks, ELO (yes, I know!), Belle and Sebastian, Cardiacs, The Divine Comedy, Frank Turner, The Futureheads, Genesis, Hot Chip, Inspiral Carpets, Julian Casablancas (his solo album actually appealed to me more than anything by The Strokes), The Kinks, Kraftwerk, The Lightning Seeds, Lauren Pritchard, Rose Elinor Dougall, Little Boots, Maxïmo Park, OK Go, Supergrass, Talking Heads, The Tiger Lillies, Velvet Underground, XTC and probably alot more!
Sandy Denny, Blondie, Roxy Music, Lhasa de Sela, Gotan Project, Gamine, Roisin Murphy, Portishead, Massive Attack, Everything but the Girl, Elvis, Johnny Cash, Amy Winehouse, Led Zeppelin, Scritti Politti, Ian Dury, Rufus Wainwright, Anthony & the Johnsons, Divine Comedy, Edwyn Collins, Band of Holy Joy, Julie London, ABC, Florence & the Machine, Leonard Cohen, Nick Cave, Goldfrapp, Au Pairs, The Carpenters, Cowboy Junkies, Flaming Lips, Grace Jones, Gorillaz, Kate Bush, k.d. lang, Scissor Sisters, Pet Shop Boys, Talking Heads, Amadou & Mariam, Tom Waits, Richard Hawley, Heaven 17, Dusty Springfield

Nick Cave, Teenage Fanclub, Sons and Daughters, Wussy, Divine Comedy, Kinks, XTC, Sonic Youth, David Bowie, Wilco, Crowded House, Quasi, Neko Case, Bob Dylan, Cheap Trick, Emma Pollock, Neil Young, The Replacements, The Beatles, The Smiths, R.E.M., Randy Newman, Versus, Gorky's Zygotic Mynci, X, Big Star, Electrelane, Shudder to Think, The Weakerthans, The Dears, Elvis Costello, Roxy Music, The Magnetic Fields, Art Brut, Jellyfish, The Pretenders, Talking Heads...
My last.fm (geeveecatullus) probably has the most consistent overview of what I like ... I tend to be into bands with lyricists that know how to tell a story, use "big" words, and are slightly melancholy, eg Songdog.
Lately I have been getting a little into soundscapy, noisestuff, too, though.

I haven't heard Rapoon (checking on youtube right now, though, sounds interesting!)
I meant stuff like Lokai, KTL, or Fennesz. (A lot of these things I find a lot more interesting live than at home, though)
Difficult to say. Maybe something like only ONE song of any band ever would do; so that people who are interested would still need to obtain the rest. I would even suggest youTube or something, but some of my faves aren't on there.

I like Kraftwerk, Scott Walker, Brian Eno, Surf City, suede, Sebastien Tellier, Phoenix, daft punk, air, new order, a certain ratio, cut copy, joy division, the wendys, roxy music. all the good stuff.
Despite her not being on my lastfm profile (some tagging fuck-up on windows media player), the artist I've listened to the most by far this year is Anna Calvi.
Nick Cave's always been a big favourite, David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Ultravox, Adam Ant and Bruce Springsteen to name a few more. Pretty varied when I stop to consider it!
Manic Street Preachers, The Stone Roses, Smashing Pumpkins, The Smiths, Pixies, Radiohead, Happy Mondays, The Libertines, Oasis, Blur, The Strokes, Foo Fighters, RATM, The Cult, QOTSA, Viva Brother, The Clash, Joy Division, Pavement, New Order, R.E.M.

To whoever posted Thos Henley, thank you! And who is he? He doesn't even seem to have a wiki page? He's so obscure, how can someone with that voice who wrote that song be so obscure???
Bit of comfort for Clodia assuming you do mean Yahoo Mail, Your missing out on some sweet ass music but... you live in Austria! So, swings and round abouts yeah?
If you tell me you live in Salzburg I'm just going to be sick with jealousy...

Sorry, I meant Spotify, not Yahoo. Thos Henley was posted by me; I discovered him totally by accident when he was playing in a club in my town (Innsbruck, not Salzburg) for free ... He is quite obscure, although magazines do seem to pick up now that he has released an album of sorts. There's some info here:http://www.last.fm/music/Thos+Henley
Low, Leonard Cohen, Wilco, Neil Young, Spacemen 3, Blur, Loop, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, Serge Gainsbourg, Guided By Voices, Galaxies 500, Red House Painters, Stars of The Lid, Pink Floyd ....
Once met Leonard Cohen and it was the best day ever. Probably wondered why some 20 year old lad liked him so much.
That Akala track is great! Am loving the violin! (I thought I'd commented but probably forgot) Everyone should listen to Magnetic Fields. Did you see the Stephin Merrit documentation? It's quite interesting.
Do you mean documentary? Didn't know there was one but am going to find out more! He's steadily becoming my second favourite lyricist after you know who.
My driving instructor keeps going on about D2 weirdly.
Bought a Depeche Mode compilation a while back but I couldn't get into it - I thinks its because it was two discs and was a little overwhelming. Same happened with simon and garfunkle. Which songs would you recommend as a starting point?
I'm totally obsessed with Belle & Sebastian, probably even more so than Pulp.
Other than that..well, The Velvet Underground, The Mountain Goats, The Decemberists, Owen Pallet, The Tindersticks, Elvis Costello, Felt, Frankie Vallie & the Four Seasons, Sufjan Stevens, Bill Callahan, The Left Banke.
Also general northern soul/powerpop, main compilations (especially those by Numero Group)
Also been listening to more ambient stuff lately- Tri Angle records stuff like How To Dress Well, Balam Acab, Holy Other, also Mark McGuire's solo stuff and Emeralds, the Darkstar album from last year too.
Very, very lucky to see Metronomy play an intimate homecoming gig at Dartington Hall on Monday. I happened to be there at a conference and had no idea they were playing until saw them wandering around. Luckily there were tickets left and I dragged a whole load of people along who'd never heard of them. I liked them at Wireless but they were amazing this time.
