I like the (probably) more obvious bands: Blur, Eels, Moloko, Velvet Underground, Iggy Pop, The Divine Comedy, The Magnetic Fields (although weirdly I didn't come to TMF as a result of being a fan of TDC, but through hearing I Don't Believe You on a CD that came with a mag)

I also like some people who are less obvious, I'm very into rap: MF Doom, Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Nas, Akala - a world away from Pulp but with one obvious connection - wordplay with a sense of humour and a certain darkness.

I like some dance music (which is good because JC's dance based side projects are stacking up): Hot Chip, Scratch Perverts (mixing dance, hip hop and songs by the likes of radiohead and ian brown into mixtapes), The Avalanches, Dan le Sac vs. Scroobius Pip.

Other notable artists in my collection: Johnny Cash (I know JC's also a fan) and Me First and The Gimme Gimme's (not really into sk8 punk or whatever you call it but they really know how to rework a classic song), Sparks and (risking credibility) I own every Eminem album!

Anyone else got any potentially unexpected musical tastes?

Some (perhaps) less obvious likes: Beulah, Bauhaus/Peter Murphy, The Small Faces, The Airborne Toxic Event, Beach House, The Bird & the Bee, Black Keys, Jimmy Eat World, The Supremes, Irving, Adele, The Killers, Matt & Kim, Modest Mouse, Pixies, Stevie Wonder, Tegan & Sara, Erasure, Depeche Mode, Pet Shop Boys, Death Cab for Cutie, Dashboard Confessional...though looking at most of these bands I think my musical tastes have largely been shaped by my love for Pulp...

Forgot about the streets and the beatles!

Tegan & Sarah - I loved the White stripes (I forgot about the White stripes!) cover of walking with a ghost by them and always meant to investigate further but never did. Where should I start?

Sort of became interested in Prince when I bought Useless Trinkets by Eels (collection of rarities) which featured two live covers of his songs - if I was your girlfriend and I could never take the place of your man, problem was I preferred the eels covers! Apologies.

And someone said soundtracks? I'm intrigued. The only soundtracks I ever listened to much were Trainspotting and the wickerman.

Seems I may be alone round these parts for my love of rap? (or American rap at least, I'm counting the streets) I spotted a bit of alt dance though.

You all need to listen to Gazzillion Ear by MF Doom, there's even a Thom Yorke remix if that makes it more palatable.

All sorts, but I particularly love The Shins, Sparks, ELO (yes, I know!), Belle and Sebastian, Cardiacs, The Divine Comedy, Frank Turner, The Futureheads, Genesis, Hot Chip, Inspiral Carpets, Julian Casablancas (his solo album actually appealed to me more than anything by The Strokes), The Kinks, Kraftwerk, The Lightning Seeds, Lauren Pritchard, Rose Elinor Dougall, Little Boots, Maxïmo Park, OK Go, Supergrass, Talking Heads, The Tiger Lillies, Velvet Underground, XTC and probably alot more!

Sparks! Just getting into them, love Barbecutie by them.

And I could become an inspiral carpets fan based on the three songs I've heard by them: come back tomorrow, dragging me down and this is how it feels.

Starting to notice some artistes getting mentioned multiple times.

Divine comedy most of all. Not surprising. More surprised at the lack of eels mentions.

i've made the rash decision of setting up a new yahoo account. Is that ok?

I was thinking we could post music as recommendations almost for getting into different artists and styles of music?

ground rules:

1 nothing too mainstream
2 No more than one song a week (to try and avoid overwhelmingness and over crowding)

that's all, unless someone thinks of some extra rules.

If anyone thinks this is a really bad idea we can discuss that as well.

by not too mainstream I mean not this weeks number one single, it can be a well known artist.

one song per person or one song for all?

My last.fm (geeveecatullus) probably has the most consistent overview of what I like ... I tend to be into bands with lyricists that know how to tell a story, use "big" words, and are slightly melancholy, eg Songdog. Lately I have been getting a little into soundscapy, noisestuff, too, though.

Per person. I won't police it. Just trying to keep it in control. By soundscapy do you mean stuff like Rapoon cause I work with him!

I haven't heard Rapoon (checking on youtube right now, though, sounds interesting!) I meant stuff like Lokai, KTL, or Fennesz. (A lot of these things I find a lot more interesting live than at home, though)

someones emailed Beulah - I like it! Should it just be songs that have previously been free or aren't commercially free?

I've sort of already broken that rule but if everyone's more comfortable with that I'll roll with it.

Difficult to say. Maybe something like only ONE song of any band ever would do; so that people who are interested would still need to obtain the rest. I would even suggest youTube or something, but some of my faves aren't on there.

I prefer your first suggestion. Rule number 3?

Music on youtube... I'd probably not give it a second listen unless it really grabbed me.
