BTW...perhaps it has already been mentioned on this thread and I just haven't read it thoroughly enough...but what had actually happened when Jarvis mentioned kicking something at someone (presumably in the crowd)? Did he actually cause someone an injury? :S
I have to say that I am little bit tempted to make a sign that says "PLEASE PLAY 'SILENCE'" for tonight! ;)

Here is DYRTFT, also got Hardcore but haven't got round to uploading it yet. Was too busy screaming and jumping to film anymore (except Jarvis taking his jacket off for some reason :P)
LeoVK wrote:I have to say that I am little bit tempted to make a sign that says "PLEASE PLAY 'SILENCE'" for tonight! ;)
Maybe Russell and Jarvis have been working on Silence today. Pulp should restrict the set to pre-Separations songs tonight. Then I won't feel like I have missed out .
Although last night's set had some "rarities", all bar three of the songs were singles (if you include Underwear which was supposed to share top billing with Common People). I reckon Nick Banks just got them to do Hits.
Actually, perhaps I should be careful what I wish for. I think I would probably feel extremely embarrassed for the band if they were to actually do it! Haha. I suppose they could try and make it vaguely palatable by working out some kind of techno/dance reworking of it? Hmm.
Ahem, but on a more serious note, what makes you think that about Nick? Is he known for being keen on the "crowd-pleasers"?
LeoVK wrote:Ahem, but on a more serious note, what makes you think that about Nick? Is he known for being keen on the "crowd-pleasers"?
When Hits was released they had an interview with Nick on the pulp people website when he defended, quite rightly, the idea that a Hits album should contain the hits and nothing else and if people didn't want to buy it for Miners Strike they should download it. He also said that Mis-shapes was not included cos they didn't rate the song anymore (how things change).
The impression I got (sadly can't find the interview now, so I have to rely on memory) was that Nick enjoyed the hit making and was proud that Pulp has an abum that would stand beside Queen's Greatest Hits. Hence my throwaway comment on Nick deciding the set list. Just my opinion no real insight here.
What a frenzied 24 hours. Left my house at 11 am yesterday morning, arrived back home at 11 this morning (to find the cat wrestling a mouse on the door mat). No sleep, lots of time spent on buses, planes, walking, airports (the hardest part) but well-worth it for the few hours in Brixton last night for the show and meeting some of the people on here (I refuse to use the word ''boardies'').
Time was really tight on the whole thing, it would have been great to arrive earlier in Brixton though more or less everyone had to make the last tube back just after midnight so there wasn't much missed post-gig.
As has been reported, it was a fantastic concert (if you fancy a laugh read the Londay Evening's Standard review). At the start with Jarvis promising more obscure songs (though ruling out ''Silence'' which was quite funny as James had been telling me about his all-major (or was it minor?) 7ths cover version in the pub less than an hour beforehand), it really promised to be an unpredictable show. After an opening salvo of DYRTFT? (ok, by now the most predictable song and set-placer), Countdown (much to My Legendary Girlfriend/Paola's delight), Lipgloss (which saw Hawley joining the stage for the first time of the evening), OU and Have You Seen Her Lately I think we were all in dreamland. Especially me when (self-indulgence alert), I waved a sign I'd made on crappy fluorescent paper ''Russell: You Are The One'' which caught Jarvis' eye. He read it aloud, looking across to Russell who rather brilliantly, flashed a rare smile and gave a thumbs-up in my general direction (not sure if that was something separate to what you were on about Jazza?). Some of us tried to scribble-up more signs before leaving the pub but they weren't great really were they?!
With a packed crowd it was inevitable I suppose that the ''fan-club'' type set would be opened-up to include more hits and album cuts that the causals would recognise so a lot of the stuff that's been played at the festivals got an airing (the presence of Different Class was trimmed however). A lengthy introduction (I thought they were going to try Seductive Barry) preceded Wickerman with Jarvis admitting he needed the lyric sheet on-hand just in case he messed-up. Three backing singers joined in for this and Bad Cover Version with Hawley back on and Russell taking a break. To be honest the singers' warbling during the spoken bits of Wickerman was quite off-putting I found as I couldn't concentrate on the words and band playing.
Just as well that a fair few less well-known songs were thrown-in as it was pretty cramped and sweaty down the front for the likes of DYRTFT, Disco 2000, Babies and Common People. Jarvis straddling of the side amps, ten foot above the stage, and thrusting while clung onto them during This Is Hardcore was an, er, sight to behold.
Nice to see the crazy Mexicans get some acknowledgement for having followed the band around all summer (surely they've not been at all of the festivals have they?!). Jarvis was in fine form, sharing a big glass of wine and later a bottle of beer with some lucky people at the front (though not the same people as ''you shouldn't mix'') although at one stage he reprimanded poor Mark for tuning-up over him talking. Obviously it wasn't meant seriously but calling him a ''knobhead'' which caused the crowd to respond sharply rather than laugh, was not something I can imagine him saying to another band member. Still he did admit he can be a twat and gave Webbo a hug later.
Misshapes was a fine note to end on though I wonder if they changed their mind on playing a couple of more songs (Party Hard would have been great, the reworked version they tried in Australia is ace...while Sheffield:Sex City was tantalisingly left-off. Someone on facebook mentioned Steve being angry at the end(?) Maybe you lucky people will hear it tonight).
Most of us headed back to the Canterbury Arms, getting in before closing for one last drink before we went our separate ways.
Here are some Bar Italia people at said venue pre-gig (sorry, my camera is shite for night/dark shots. My pics of the gig are crap. The fella I asked to take the snap took three snaps, all with his finger in the lens!).
From left to right: Eamonn, Christina (Weener), Anet, Paola (MyLegendaryGirlfriend), Dave (Deebs), Rolf (non-Bar Italia person. Really nice German guy I met at Suede at Brixton in May), Matt (Sleeve) and James.
It was also great to meet username Twiggy outside the pub after the concert
Eh! Chill. I was upset when I read that, then relieved when I saw the reviewer's name. After all the lashing-out, he still gave 3 stars. 3 stars for Pulp by his standard meant he found the show omfgawesome. Anyone who knew him will be shocked he actually gave a 3, a 1 star rating is even generous. He hates Pulp with passion. I'm a Blur fan so I know this and he loves Blur a lot but he tends to hate Blur songs that are universally praised.
"Right said fred with northern accents", "shallow songwriting", "novelty tag" - there, your bias-free writing clues. Makes you think why did he even bother. I feel bad for one poor soul (me) who struggled to have a ticket and then some critic who regarded the band as useless got easy passes. I truly believed he's mellowed. We should be sending him a fruit basket or better yet, the latest NME issue with Jarvis and Julian Casablancas on the cover.
Cheers guys, I'm from Manilla, Philippines. So jealous right now.

Thing is I saw Morrissey with my wife early in August and came away totally underwhelmed (my wife is a big Smiths/Morrissey fan and his previous show a few years ago at Brixton was infinitely better) yet that show got 4 stars. We were gobsmacked as it was a very lacklustre show. And after the 4 star review from the Standard from the more perfunctionary Hyde Park gig http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/music/review-23966852-pulp-wireless-festival-hyde-park---review.do I would have expected at least the same for a far more ambitious set list.
I arrived in Brixton too late for the Canterbury Arms so went straight to the venue. I thought the crowd was amazing - especially after Wireless! No pushing, no drunks, everyone was just so happy and at the front everyone seemed to sing along to most of the songs!
I was really surprised that they left so quickly after the 1rst encore, without saying a few words or mentioning anything about seeing / not seeing them again soon. They must have been pushed by time :( For a moment a few of us thought they might come back for a second encore!
The setlist was amazing ! Countdown, wow. It was HEAVEN on earth for 2 hours. I'm now feeling pretty depressed thinking this might be the last time... It was hard enough after Magna but somehow now it feels even worse thinking this might be it. I only wish that they enjoyed playing together again so much that they might want to give it another try... Jarvis looked like he had a great time but it was hard to tell for the others. Maybe some of you more at the front were able to see if they were smiling a bit ?
Sheffield Sex City, of course the oft played Underwear replaced it. grrr....
Trees, Monday Morning, and The Fear pretty good, but stil not yet regretting not going tonight (not that I was able to anyway as my wife was having her night out).
It was me he kicked it at it was like this wooden little box thing hit my wrist didn't hurt that much just a bit shocked. I've got it though looks like something for a gutair. I thought maybe someone might ask for it back but no one did so it's now sat in my room with me still trying to work out what the hell it is.

Sheffield: Sex City!! I knew I should have foregone financial prudence and stuck around for tonight. Fuck! I really hope bootlegs for both nights appear at some stage.

Haha! Really? Jarvis sounded quite contrite about that in fairness.
And I loved Nick's exit from the stage last night. He did it really slowly, last one off, turning and half-turning to the crowd, wanting to take in all the adulation but very gracious for it too. Was really nice to see.
Really lovely to meet some of you last night. Far surpassed my expectations with the setlist. Very tempted to try and come again tonight but bottled it because I was so knackered from last night. I hope this isn't the end and I'd love to hear more from TiH...

Yeah, I liked that too. He and Jarvis looked like they were enjoying themselves the most. Steve was strangely subdued. Mark seemed to take Jarvis' barbs with good humour - couldn't really see Russell or Candida from where I was.
Aw man, I just watched the DYRTFT video that Jazza put up, I wish I went to tonights gig now but I decided to be sensible with my finances for once. I'm sure the setlist will appear on here soon, that's when i might cry :)
Saying that I hope they were great for those that went tonight and let us know if there were any clues about their futures.

For me, the regrets are not hearing Sheffield Sex City nor Live Bed Show, but then I did get OU and Bad Cover Version. Had they done My Legendary Girlfriend tonight I would be crying.

Sex City was played in the set. Wickerman was played as a 2nd encore. Incredible show but the crowd was dreadful compared to last night. They played til 11:15.... Party Hard was played too, and The Trees!
Was Wickerman played as well as Sex City in the end?
Only Wickerman for the 2nd encore, but this time Russell played on it! He kept trying to launch a paper airline into the crowd and failed all 3 times. Adorable.

They played 10 minutes longer tonight? I feel cheated now
It makes sense the crowd being better on the first night as that sold first so there is likely to be more Pulp fans and less people there just for a night out. I'm happy you guys got Sex City, Party Hard and Trees.
Gutted I missed Wickerman, - Had to get back for a train to Dorking! Excellent - Acrylic Afternoons and maybe Mile End would have completed it. BTW - I was the guy stood to the right of the sound desk screaming every word (yes the people around me thought I was a cock too!)
Just really disappointed we didn't get His n Hers either night, that is a fantastic track and deserved some party time.
I have to admit that I had my fingers crossed for His N Hers when they came back for the second encore, but in the end I was quite happy to hear Wickerman again...in fact it seemed a very appropriate end to the evening.
There was a nice atmosphere in the crowd for the most part but (and it's unlike me to say this) but I thought they were a little bit tame in some places.
I got a few funny looks when I was jumping about and singing along to the likes of Sheffield: Sex City and Countdown...but sod 'em. I had fun! ;)
Same for Sheffield Sex City, I had to explain to some people in front of me what was happening and why it was important. Yeah sure that went down well!
Could have lost Trees and Party Hard for some of the usual staples... Acrylic Afternoons etc...
I'm tempted to look on eBay to see if a copy of the set list goes up on there. REALLY wanted one for a momentum and just a special something as it was my 21st today... What a way to celebrate it!!
Don't really get what people are saying about the crowd being off.. but I was right at the front so maybe didn't notice it as much.. and what the above person said about the 31st tickets being sold first.
This was my first time seeing Pulp btw.
Oh, and I got to touch Jarvis :D

last night was amazing...personally glad to hear the set we got that night, my friend and I went on a bit of a nerdy trip to 59 Lyndhurst Grove a few hours before just to see it/take a photo and were constantly saying how cool it would be if they played Countdown and O.U. ....so when he said they were going to play some different songs and played Countdown SECOND we were going nuts!! :)
I was just gutted to find out later that whoever chucked that letter onstage inspired them to drop Sex City in favour of.....Underwear. :P Great song yeah but when you're on a high watching Pulp do the rarely played tracks you'd really hoped for you don't want to Jarvis go "hmm we were going to vary it a little but no, let's play Underwear" haha
can't have everything though, and we got to hear O.U/Countdown so I don't mind! :D fantastic set, beat Wireless by a country mile obviously, and was up there with their Glastonbury set. really hope this isn't the end for them...if not simply to hear His N Hers/Sheffield: Sex City at some point ;)
Got 12(!) songs on my phone, including Trees, Countdown, Party Hard and Wickerman (phone cut out with 1 second left!) Will be easier to send a Channel link as soon as I get them uploaded. Photos to follow too.
Edit: I'm still giggling at the point just before the end of Common People where Mark threw the t-shirt off stage and it hit the security guy! It didn't pick it up on my phone dammit. I did however get Jarvis humping monitors on Hardcore. -- Edited by SarahAWilson on Friday 2nd of September 2011 02:26:41 AM

Jarvis: "it could be the last time we ever see you"
post-encore
"I hope we do meet some time in the future,"
Ah, teasing everyone again.

I have to say, I left the gig with the gut feeling there was to be no more Pulp. Hope to god I've got it all wrong, but these two comments made by Jarvis, and something about the way bowed out at the end, definitely looked to me like he was saying goodbye on a greater scale than just for the end of the night.
I don't want to put a downer on all the excitement of an amazing night, and I've probably been one of the most optimistic on this board about the prospects of a new album, another tour etc, but at the end of tonight, I came away feeling it was the last time I'd seen Pulp.

Was it just me?
I think it may be the last time for the full Pulp line-up (1989-2002), but I don't think it will be the last Pulp gig. At the very least Jarvis will do solo dates (with Steve in tow) and play some Pulp material.
It will be interesting when Jarvis does make a new album whether he does it as a solo artist or not.
Perhaps they'll do a Suede next year and have one night each for His n Hers, Different Class and TIH. A lot of bands are doing the album tour thing so you never know.

That would really be great. Especially if they do the deluxe versions . Should combine Intro with His 'n' Hers as they are of the same era.
just front crushing :( I moved back after Sheffield Sex City and actually had a great view etc because of the sloping floor!
Best place in Brixton is just in front of any of the numerous crush barriers. But never behind them. It may be tempting pre-gig to have them to lean on, but once it starts duck under and move forward. I broke a couple of ribs once upon a time after being pushed onto the edge of a stage. Anyway, look after yourself.
JayJay wrote:errrr one black eye, one broken finger, two cracked ribs and a very lumpy/bumpy head!!!!
Sounds nasty. How?
A few people around me lost their specs on Wednesday night, but nothing as bad as that.
There was a bit of unpleasantness - I was right at the front (will post photos over the weekend) and there was an UTTER DICK behind us at the start - think I'm safe in saying he isn't likely to be on the forum but if anyone wants to offer me out then ok - who was barking a couple of words per verse that he knew of DYRTFT and Monday Morning, and spilling his beer over everyone. I turned round, shushed him, grabbed his wrist and pushed his beer down to his side. Got away with it and he seemed to get the message, but he did have a fight with another person and then a bouncer just before the first encore.

The main albums have already been deluxified. Unlikely to happen again.
Jarvis saying the same thing at the end last night as he did at the Magna gig suggests to me that is it for this particular reformation anyway. Maybe a little tour across the Atlantic, but I'd be pleasantly surprised if there were more domestic shows.

Headliners at Gasto 2013 when it returns maybe.
Don't expect any enhancements to the deluxe editions, just want them to play the extra tracks live as well (highly unlikely).
I suspect that they may play a few arenas in UK and possibly Europe. Not sure it would be worth heading to the USA, as I don't think they would play large enough venues to justify the costs.
Would do no harm to come back in 2013. Always leave people wanting more.
Did Candida read the opening paragraph? She didn't in the only bootleg I have from an earlier gig.
I don't think she did as I was watching her closely during it and her lips did not seem to be moving. Her voice though, so probably a pre recording used.
Enjoyed the second night even more than the first though both were amazing. Only downside for me was that the batteries went on my video camera meaning I couldn't record anything past the intro. Even at the front only about half the people new the words to songs like the Trees, Party Hard and the Fear which was a little suprising, but great to hear these again.
Lovely to meet a few more off here too, if only briefly. It has been an amazing year watching Pulp and if this is the last time I see them at least I know they went out with a top performance. Still hopefull of more gigs though, but I guess we all have to wait and see.
Hey people, what a week, 3 nights of pulp and I am tonight somehow depressed. Loved hanging out with some of you guys specially Anet, the master of getting to the front. I lost my iphone on the first night, reckon someone nicked it, yikes, very depressing, but still loved every second of it, and last night too. PEACE!!
cool thanks Sarah. Done the best photos of 31st (may well add more later) and will do the 1st ones later when I have more time. This is one I particularly like :P

also sorry the photo is massive

3 nights of Pulp? Have I missed something?! It was great to meet you too. Gutted for you that you didn't find your phone. I really felt for you, cos you were clearly loving every second of the show, and then losing your phone must've put a downer on it for you. Hopefully the second night made up for it?
Back in Cornwall now and trying to take it all. I can't believe I saw them in such an intimate setting on Wednesday. I would have liked to have heard more from TiH and am gutted to have missed The Fear. Given how little they've played from TiH this summer, I'd love them to tour and play the whole thing - preferably with Anne Dudley. What's the chances? Oh well, a girl can dream...

Oh my GOD, that security guy's head in the lower right hand corner is so creepy.
Just a dude in a do rag doing his job! Great show, brilliant lights, nice to meet some of you in the real world. Let's hope there's more to come and if not, at least we got this.
Just arrived back home in sunny Newcastle after a pretty awful train journey home! Mega delays meant a long wait at Kings Cross. They were about to cancel our train due to lack of train guard but thankfully I had the sense to take my other half to see Pulp who is a Train Guard and volunteered to work the train back to get us home!
We went to the Canterbury Arms before the show but due to our late arrival at around 7.45 I didn't see any familar faces still in there. Got into the venue at around 8.40 and took position around mid-crowd. Great view from anywhere in the Brixton Academy so was happy there. Great crowd (around us anyway) everybody singing along with enthusism and we had at least 3 hardcore fans nearby who we had a little brief chat with - probably mutual respect for signing along to every word od 'Sheffield:Sex City'!
Nothing else to say really that hasn't already been said. Thanks for posting all your bits and pieces as I have been reading them on my phone on what became a rather long train journey! - They killed at least an hour.
I must say that having watched Pulp twice this year stone cold sober I decided I should have a few drinks for this one! I was watching my manners and being a rather well behaved drunk when very near the end someone knocked me which in turn made me spill a portion of freshly poured cold beer down the kneck of the young lady in front of me. I did spend about 20 seconds trying to drunkenly apologies to her (knowing she'd also rather watch Pulp than have some man begging for forgiveness at her!) but I think she was ok in the end as we had a little joke about it. If you are that lady - I'm sorry! If it is any consolation I was by that point already covered in beer from an earlier incident where the male responsible was not being quite as well mannered as I was espiring to be!
I attempted to make a recording on my iphone of the show (sometimes works sometimes doesn't) Most of it is of such poor inaudible quality that there is no point in uploading it. I have captured Jarvis' between song banter and perhaps I may have one track that is ok. I haven't listened through it all yet. However, I did note by this recording how long they played for I pressed record at the end of the intro track and stop after wickerman. 2 hrs 15! Thank you Pulp!
The set was totally amazing. I could only have wished for O.U. in addition to what we got. Sheffield Sex City was hoped for but 'Wickerman' came out of the blue! Quite simply one of the best shows I have ever seen and reafirming my faith that this band are by far my favourite band in the entire world!

That is quality!
hahaha seriously?! That's amazing, are they allowed to do that?! I just imagine it being like some sort of train version of Airplane..
I'm FINALLY back home, after having to travel to Manchester for a uni resit, then get the coach back to Newcastle..done 9 hours traveling today! But it was worth it, both gigs were AMAZING. I think I enjoyed the first one a little bit more, just cos there was more banter and the crowd were better, but both of them were equally as great, really.
So, SO glad we got Sheffield Sex City. Obviously there are always gonna be songs that I wanted them to play (A Little Soul would have been lovely), but those setlists were better than I could have ever hoped for. Have You Seen Her Lately was a big surprise!
On the first night, did anyone notice Jarvis getting really angry during the start of OU? He was shouting at one of the tech guys and pointing at something, whilst banging the bass drum with a face like thunder..I wonder what the problem was. It looked like he was pointing at the stylophone, but I didn't see anyone go over to it.
I had a pretty good view during both the gigs, right at the front in the middle, as this (pretty scary) photo I took during Sheffield Sex City shows..
The only people to annoy me was a woman on the barrier with her husband/partner standing behind her, "protecting" her from the crowd. He obviously didn't like Pulp, and didn't smile or sing along at all. I don't know why, but it just wound me up! But I've got a thing about people who try and protect other people at the front of a gig. If you need protecting, you shouldn't be standing at the front! I remember once going to see the Flaming Lips, being right at the front and then this guy shouting at me for "dancing too near" his pregnant wife!! Jeeeez.
Anyway, two amazing nights. Let's hope it's not the end, but if it is, it was a great way to go.
That's a beauty of a photo Callum! - I can't do being at the front anymore as I am quite fragile! I sometimes really wish I could for moments like that! Also if I was pregnant I probably wouldn't go to see the Flaming Lips! They do warn people before their shows that it's pretty intense! Funny you should mention The Flaming Lips as I was trying discuss on the way home how that Pulp show sat in my top 5 best ever gigs! I'm yet to put them in order... but 1,3,4,& 5 are Pulp and number 2 is The Flaming Lips!
On a side note about getting home! Even though it took ages and one of our party ended up working - we were still very well fed and watered on the train and 1000x better than Megabus! I did offer you free train travel to Newcastle Callum!. 3 out of 5 of us there work on the railways and I think any of us would have stepped up to get us back home if needed. There were about 800 of people on that train and it would have been cancelled! So thank god for Pulp... otherwise those people wouldn't have been able to get home. (can you believe they still complained at my other half for being late?!)
The whole show is just a strange blur to me now. I'm hoping someone has bootleged it so I can fill in the gaps.

Was it just me?
I've had a very long plane ride back to L.A. and 3.5 hours in traffic (had to pick up our little pug) to think about it, and I agree with you...it did seem like a good-bye. I thought Wickerman was a very strange choice for a second encore, even if Russell did play on it (I could not hear him at all, by the way, and he was practically hugging his monitor through most of the song).
The only mention of any future appearance was Jarvis' plug for his Literature Festival appearance in October. They do seem to like being mysterious though, so I hope I'm wrong and they announce a massive U.S.(and U.K., I guess) Tour and knock Russell out like Mr. T to get him on the plane.
Anyway, the shows were incredible. I'm sorry I didn't get to the pub on either night--Eamonn tried to help me after the show on the 1st night but I have a very bad sense of direction and an even worse sense of timing. I enjoyed the 2nd show more, probably because I was much closer to Mr. Senior, and the sight of a ticket pocket drives me wild. London crowds are so much more polite than American crowds; I expected the big push when the show started but everyone stayed in their places and we barely got smooshed at all. Hearing "Countdown" both nights was an indescribable pleasure (even Russell was singing along), O.U., Sheffield Sex City...it was all wonderful. I even had "Trees" (of all songs...) stuck in my head all the way to Heathrow this morning (or whatever day that was, at this point).
I noticed this, we were on that side of the stage. He wasn't happy, was he. It did nook like he was pointing at the stylophones. Maybe he wanted the levels adjusted?
Does anyone have any bootlegs from either of the shows? I was at the Thursday night show, and it was amazing! After waiting 11 years to see Pulp in the flesh, I had an absolute blast of a time! Despite missing the last train, and wandering the streets of London at 1.30am looking for a hotel, and being exhausted to near the point of collapse, it was the best show I've ever been to, by far!
BTW, just curious...anyone else from America make the trek over the pond for the show?

I did have an account but they banned my ip address! Not really understanding the rules on there - I had a clearout of all my utorrent files and had nothing to share anymore so my ratio dropped so I could not download. I tried to ditch the account and start again from fresh and they got a bit shitty about that and banned me. We're not on speaking terms now.
I'm still trying to take Thursday night in. One of the best days of my life - I met every member of Pulp (plus Richard Hawley)... it's still not sank in properly....
