I know what you mean, in a band like, I dunno Coldplay or something, where the lyrics are just total blandness it must be a real gutter, but I think with Pulp it's fair enough- the lyrics are at least 50% of what makes the band!! And Jarvis has written enough lyrics over the years, too...
Ah poor Coldplay, they ain't that bad, looked OK at Glastonbury from what I saw. In most of the bands I like the lyrics are important, but there are bands like say, Led Zep (who I think are massively overrated), where the lyrics seem pretty incidental.
How much in royalties has Robert Plant got for this, err, lyrical masterpiece ?
You need coolin', baby, I'm not foolin', I'm gonna send you back to schoolin', Way down inside honey, you need it, I'm gonna give you my love, I'm gonna give you my love.

Funny reading through it, it's the sort of thing Jarvis could have written
In my dreams, I was drowning my sorrows, but my sorrows they learned to swim
Waves of regrets, Waves of joy
I reached out to the one I tried to destroy
You, you said you'd wait
Until the end of the world
This is pretty interesting, and seems completely plausible. Also- have there actually been any interviews or anything where a member of Pulp have said "we split all the money evenly between each member"- cause I'm constantly reading in articles that this is what Pulp did, but there doesn't seem to be any evidence other than every band member being credited on the sleeve.
Nick Banks, BBC Radio Sheffield April 2008:
''Pulp very democratically split the money five ways so yeah, I'm not complaining, did alright out of it but y'know, I haven't got a Lear jet.''

Ooh thanks for this- very interesting indeed. I still wonder about the lyrics thing, though.

blah blah.......
This discussion about lyrics has reminded me of the 'lecture' Jarvis gave in Brighton a few years back - think it was called 'On Song'?
Anyway, rather unexpectedly (given that he is a lyrical genius) Jarvis made the point that lyrics are incidental to the 'perfect' pop song. Sorry if I'm not summarising this very well, the memory is a bit hazy now, but I do remember him playing Heroes by Bowie to illustrate this point. If you read the lyrics to Heroes on their own, they look like inane crap, but as the sum of it's parts Heroes kicks ass . You have to bear in mind at this point it was well before the X Factor conglomerate murdered it.
Jarvis wasn't saying that lyrics don't matter, but even the best lyrics in the world cannot make a good song alone.

I remember them mentioning this around 1995ish. Was it not on the No Sleep Till Sheffield documentry? They basically reckon it avoids and silly arguments over money and Jarvis can make more money if he wants to anyway as he's the famous one through other work.
It's the way forward for bands i think... how many have split and never spoke again due to disagreements on royality payments?!
That was perfection!!!! Just home now from a whirlwind vacation in London. Loved every minute of it. It's been a dream of mine to see Pulp and they were even better than I thought they would be! At one point I had a beer thrown in my face (ah, the price you pay for dancing in the thick of it) and even though I was temporarily blinded I still sang my heart out to Pink Glove.
I'm regretting not meeting up with any of you lovely people I would have loved to join in on the fun.
I'm still so euphoric from the show that I'm considering having a massive yard sale to fund a trip back over for Brixton. Anyone in house practicing Pulp philanthropy?

I also had a beer poured over my chest, YIKES!! I was like one of those wet tshirt competitors in a tacky Spanish resort hahahahahaha. at least I was drunk enough not to give a damn.
Thank you to the lovely tall man who put me on his shoulders for a glourious 5 minutes, the view was amazing and sorry if I blocked anyones view for those 5 minutes.
In my opinion it is. The sound is far better on the youtube vids I mentionned earlier

Why do people throw beer at each other at these things? Such a waste of money and beer, even if it is that Tuborg piss. In America, it generally only happens at aggro metal and punk events. Emmy the Great tweeted that she got hit in the head with one while watching Pulp.
The highlight was definitely Pink Glove, I was hoping to see that live after hearing the superior Peel version. Overall it was an amazing gig, but spoilt slightly by drunken idiots pushing and singing really loudly and badly. Also what happened to Pulp's promise of playing songs from "all periods of their career"? It was more like a Different Class gig with a few extras. Hope Brixton is a bit more diverse, but either way its great to see them again :)
I always wondered about the Help the Aged credits thing. What's strange is that I noticed on the AllMusic site Russell actually has a credit on the song Dishes, though this doesn't correspond to TIH's liner notes. Curious?
