Cheers Stef!

Someone mentioned on Twitter they had played Razzmatazz in second encore so that must be one of the 2 you didn't know?

21 Songs! Have they ever played a set that long? A couple of suprises - Expected it to be His n Hers & DC heavy but they really have gone the whole hog! I would have expected maybe 'Sunrise' as a nod to WWL.

Very exciting stuff!

Anyway... I'll close my eyes and put my fingers in my ears now until July (yeah right!)

Surprised by Mis-Shapes being included, as I thought Jarvis had come to hate it...

Glad to see so much His N' Hers there - Acrylic Afternoons and Lipgloss will be the highlights for me!

It couldn't be better for me as I only saw them for the first time in 95 and the majority of my gigs after that were post TIH so I wasn't as bothered if they didn't play later material. Apart from This Is Hardcore itself

For O.U. I really cannot say for sure...sorry :(
The gig lasted 2 hours.
As for Mis-Shapes it was the final song of the encore.

As much as I am over the moon with them reuniting, I am a little surprised that there are NO WLL songs.....would be nice to hear Russell's input for them - still early days yet - would rather have Shes A Lady and Pink Glove as to Acrylic and Have you seen her

Does anyone reckon this will be the setlist for the whole tour? Hope they mix it up a bit and throw in more songs off This Is Hardcore as well as one or two off We Love Life.

Do you have any pics?smile

Obviously they won't be doing all of those at each gig. The last bit is just their selection they can chop and change with when they feel like it. I can't believe they were daft enough to stick it all on one piece of paper though! Surely they have heard of the internet! (yes they definately have I have seen them on it)

Anyway - If I do just manage one of the shows this year I can die a happy man! This is going to be ace!!

I hope there's more as well - hoping they'll do the other singles off This Is Hardcore.

Was also hoping for The Fear as that would be a brilliant opener, but the setlist is still spot on.

It occured to me in the night that most of us won't be getting that encore! Festivals have strict curfews so for most the show will end at 'Common People'. So don't get carried away or you're gonna end up being disappointed.

Good innit? biggrin This crossed my mind as well as I was reading the setlist. Am I the only one that will find it a bit odd to see Jarvis singing the songs with the beard though? Haha. I'm sure I'll get over it though.

Great to see Pink Glove on the list. The potential encore songs are all great as well, although I could take or leave Acrylic Afternoons. Would much rather have She's A Lady instead, if only so Russell could have his big moment.

And yes, I am also intrigued to know whether they brought the stylophone along with them. Am guessing that, if O.U. is on their list, they must be touring with that as well.

Also thrilled to see Countdown on there...I think that's a really good choice.

I have a feeling that this is the beginning of something really great. Looking forward to seeing all the setlists being posted and hopefully some nice, good quality video footage too!

Also...is it sad that I almost had trouble clicking on the setlist links as I was too excited to have a steady hand? disbelief

Same...and I also prefer Sheffield: Sex City to My Legendary Girlfriend, and I think they have made the right choice there too, as the two couldn't really co-exist in the same gig.

Anyone else getting slightly edgy about the title "Festival set"? Does this suggest that at the festivals, they won't be bothering with the encore songs...including Wireless?? I think I would possibly cry a little.

ALSO (sorry still over excited)

everyone just looked so happy to be back - candida was smiling away, and i could see russell dancing at the side during the build ups/mental guitar bits/ of sunrise.

it was just fucking amazing. I'll stop going on now.

but does anyone know what he was wittering on about during o.u and countdown?

A lot of the festivals they're at they're playing beneath headliners, Wireless will hopefully mean a longer setlist. They've got to have an encore if they're headlining surely?

When Blur headlined Hyde Park in 2009 they played 25 songs over a mains set and two encores. Just as an example I searched on setlist.com, and Jay Z's headlining set at Wireless last year also consisted of 25 songs. So I wouldn't worry, Wireless will be amazing!

Not a lot of love for We Love Life? It's my least favourite Pulp album (although maybe I'd change my mind if I'd seen any of the forest performances). I'd rather see Birds in Your Garden than Sunrise.

Pulp's songs are longer than Blur's. Blur have always played 20-25 songs in their sets

I think 1 hour 45 was the average last year but it may be more for Pulp as most people will be attending to see them.

I'm guessing that it might just be a "play it by ear" affair. Looks like Common People is the first encore song...and then maybe they'll throw in some extras depending on how many the festival management agree to?

[SPOILER] UPDATE - 25/05 setlist in Le Bikini, Toulouse
Permalink

Got some very mixed up feelings about the show in Toulouse.

The venue was bigger than I expected actually. Lots of instruments on stage. The band arrived on stage about 9pm and Jarvis was holding a screen displaying 'Bonsoir Toulouse'. The band was composed of Jarvis, Candida, Steve, Russell (despite that some people could not believe in this and said he was a look alike), Mark, Nick, and another guitarist. They started by playing 'Do You Remember The First Time?' which was very well received by the audience. Most of the people were very excited and the audience was really hot.

After that, Jarvis asked us if we remembered the first time, exactly 17 years ago when they played at Le Bikini on 25th May 1994. He asked if there were people who attended the show at that time. And if there were people born on this day too

Then they continued with another His'n'Hers song, a good performance of 'Pink Glove'.

Those 2 first songs really sounded like to the performance of that time. Then the band started playing mainly songs from 'Different Class' for the rest of the set:

'Pencil Skirt' which sounded really like a 1995 revival. Still good to see Russell playing violin however.

After saying that we didn't get the feeling that we had changed, Jarvis introduced 'Something Changed'. This version didn't changed so much still. That ballad was still quite pleasant then.

'Disco 2000', 'Babies' which had not changed too.

After talking a bit about raving, the band played 'Sorted For E's and Wizz' which sounded a bit different: new intro, and some violin effects by Russell.

Then, some great tunes with 'F.E.L.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E.' and 'I Spy'; followed by 'Underwear'.

After presenting us the fact that Russell was back in the band, Jarvis told us that he needed a rest and so the band played a couple of songs from their 2 last albums. First 'This Is Hardcore' which was introduced by the instrumental remix'. Jarvis was doing some kinds of effects with a sort of box in which he was singing. And then a rendition of 'Sunrise' during which before the last verse Jarvis thrown his acoustic guitar on stage that he left broken. It was one of the guitars he played with at the Galerie Chappe a few years ago, which also broke a little my heart then Despite the great performances of these songs, the audience seemed a bit bored of not hearing 'Different Class' songs anymore and talked a bit during the songs.

Fortunately 'Sunrise' was not the last song, and Russell came back for a performance of 'Bar Italia' which is a great ender too.

Quickly the band came back for an encore 'we have forgotten something' and played 'Common People' which seemed the song for which most of the audience came that night. Most of the audience was singing 'I wanna live with Common People' which made those people looking really common. Despite the original sense of the song, this performance here was for the masses and to get the most of people coming to the festival. The band would not have left some place for sarcasm with songs such as 'Cocaine Socialism'.

Hence the mixed-up feelings: In general the band sounded quite right, and in top form. Jarvis was moving a lot of stage and looked to enjoy the show. But what I missed the most about the show was the lack of 'great moments'. Yes, the global performance was good and there were some great tunes, but we couldn't really move on different feelings during the set. The set seemed to be just to give us a revival of the Different Class tour and didn't really bring anything new (not in terms of songs or performance, but of feelings). But as a festival set the band want to show during the whole set that they can still rock, and not many other feelings. But I have to ask if it actually makes sense today to hear the same tunes and the same tour as in 1995? (If they would have done something different people would have say it wasn't as good as before). The set is still enjoyable, but who can be aimed by such a show despite the brit-pop nostalgias (the same who are going to see Blur and Suede reunion shows) who want to dance as in their early years??!

Fortunately the band came back for a small second set, which was more interesting (for me, but probably not for everyone as I saw a lot of people from the audience leaving during it) which proved the band was not here only to bring back their memories of a specific time, but still have more to play.

They started with 'O.U.', one of the greatest tracks from the Intro album, let's hope they will play Styroloc or Razzmatazz sometimes soon.

After say, Jarvis remind us that exactly 17 years ago, he played at Le Bikini, and added the fact that exactly 20 years ago on 25th May 1991 the band was playing at the Leadmill in Sheffield and played for the first time the next song: 'Countdown'. For me this was the highlight of the show. The version sounded a bit different from how it was played before I think, but the result was quite good. Let's also hope they will play more from 'Separations' or 'Death Come To Town'

Then, someone asked for 'Master Of The Universe' but Jarvis said we will have to wait other 17 years. A bit of a shame as we could expect from the reunion they bring back some early hidden gems. This second small set, was more axed in 1990-1994 material however (while the main set sounded like a 1995/1996 show). So, after playing 'Joyriders' the band followed with 2 interesting performances of 'His'n'Hers' and 'Acrylic Afternoons'. Finally the band ended with 'Mis-shapes' and did not come back for another encore or any performance of the songs written on the second setlist.

As a conclusion, of course I was expecting a king of 'best-of show', but not actually a 'Different Class' show (despite the flyers which looked a lot DC). I'm not saying it's bad, just that it gave me the feeling to not bring anything new. It may sounds like a strange feeling, I know, but it was a feeling that have hopefully disappeared when the band started to play the second set ! :D

they're doing festival, and promoters want hits, they dont want obscure bsides, thats why you get this setlist. there's nothing unexpected here, bar the 2nd encore. if they make another album and tour "real" venues we'll get a different show.

i get your point, but you were aware of what you would get alphi ;) thanks for the review detailed though. cant wait for london.

Yeah that was me! Come say hello next time, I´m friendlier than I look.

Glad the gig has been well covered on here, lets me off reviewing duty. I´ve a couple of short crappy vids I´ll upload at a later date. Off to Primavera now!

Their press release promised the hits. The promo photo used was from 95.

Thank you Alphi for a great review.

I imagine if they have taken time to rehearse songs like OU andd Countdown, that they will be played at festivals. I just hope I get to hear Countdown live, so excited and very jelous of you were there last night and who will be there tomorrow!

I also imagine at Leeds where they are headlining, they will play a good encore, as it's their only Yorkshire date.

Brothers and sisters, this will be a great summer!!!

Don't think so, as the fact they played Countdown at the Leadmill, on 25 May 1991 is not mentioned in Pulp Wiki. I'll add the info right now BTW...

Thanks for posting the reviews and videos, I just can't believe this is all happening! How did they leave the stage, did Jarvis give any clue as to what could be next ?

Au fait, any other Frenchies travelling to London for Wireless ?

I'll meet up with you! I'll need all the help I can get navigating Wireless. I've been to V Fest in Canada, but it's not nearly as big as Wireless I assume.

Me too! This is really happening... wow.

and also..very impressed by Jarvis movements, like there is no tomorrow. Or like it's still 1995.

I kinda can't stop thinking about these clips, making it very hard to concentrate at work. Unbelievable. I thought Disco 2000 sounded especially wonderful.

Seems like a good idea. I'm wondering if there's likely to be a post gig club suitable for the Pulp fan. Shame Wireless is a Sunday! Also, the beard.....has it gone? It looks like it might have.

Think I can clearly see the beard fully in tact in the HD videos.

Thanks for sharing these. Just got home from work and watched the lot. I don't know whether to laugh or cry!

Of course I'm up for a meet up at Wireless. There's about 10 of us travelling down to London for the weekend so wherever or whenever is fine by me.

Compared to when they toured We Love Life - its fantastic to see Jarvis so full of enthusiasm once again - he really was jumping round a fair bit !!!

I thought that too. It's comparable to his Glastonbury performance in 2009 - he was all over the shop like this then too and I couldn't believe my eyes! He does it more so than he did in 1995 i think. I get the feeling here that the band are on the same emotional journey as the crowd playing these old songs again. They all look and sound fantastic. I just hope they can keep the pace with all these concerts lined up and I hope the novelty doesn't wear off for me if I am going to keep looking at spoilers!

It was the bit where he leans on Russell during I Spy (I think it was that one) that got to me

It's great to see they are having fun. It doesn't look like something 'just for the money'. Hopefully this summer tour will will function as something like: 'We need to get to know each other again' or 'Do we still have it?'. Hopefully they'll have it, although I loved Jarvis solo work and especially his last record, and something more will come out of it. Perhaps not a full-blown worldwide tour, but a project like Jarvis did in Paris back then.

Was Russel punished or something ? on the side of the stage, he looks like he's an additionnal musician. Webber was the "main man" on that side.

Yeah I felt a little sad for Russell, he looked so old! And Candida too. Maybe Russell wants to stay low key or something?
