Best of all, more lovely previously unseen footage. Check this:
''Also included is the ''Lost Tape''. Incredible footage of Pulp live up close and personal in Chesterfield in 1985, which has only this year come to light''.
Up close and personal in Chesterfield...Christ, there's a phrase I never thought I'd hear...
Presumably it's taken from the Outrage Tour in October of that year? (They also played somewhere called ''Gotham City Club'' in Chesterfield a couple of months earlier).
There's also footage from a Leadmill gig in '91 (think this was mentioned on here before), including a very early rendition of 'Babies'. When they showed an edited version of The Beat Is The Law 80s & 90s on Sky before Christmas someone posted the Pulp bits on youtube but there seems to be enough extra stuff like the live footage mentioned above to make it well-worth buying.

FWIW, I pre-ordered this last fall, and received this email today regarding the upcoming release:
Hi Firstly a big apology for not notifying anyone sooner about what was happening with the preorder of The Beat Is The Law (part 2) DVD you so kindly made end of last year. We have to announce that this DVD is not going ahead. But the good news is that we have made a fantastic new feature film called The Beat Is The Law - Fanfare For the Common People. Release date 24th May 2011. This is probably the film we wanted to make in the first place but never had the money to do. Not only that but we are now releasing this never-before-seen feature film on a double disc DVD with 24 page booklet all lovingly designed in the Designers Republic. Part 2 (the bit you preordered) is included as an extra as well as loads of other fabulous extras including incredible footage of Pulp in 1985 which has only surfaced since you preordered. Not only that but we are giving away a full colour poster of the Fanfare tDR artwork and postcards of the specially commissioned film artwork. Not only that but the first 200 preorders (including yours) will go into a prize draw to win one of 20 colour Fanfare posters signed by all members of the reunited Pulp lineup. Have a look at our new look website www.thebeatisthelaw.com for more. Also more stuff is happening over on twitter www.twitter.com/beatisthelaw and facebook www.facebook.com/thebeatisthelaw We hope the wait has been worth it!
I have it on good authority that the Chesterfield tape is about half an hour of decent quality camcorder footage from Russell's collection, about 15 minutes of which is included on this release. There's also a couple of complete songs from the same Leadmill '91 footage that is featured in the documentary that was shown before Christmas.

I never got round to buying Part 1 (80's Special) - I'm a bit confused with all the talk of changing the second part...is it still worthwhile buying the 80's DVD or will the new one contain most of that as an extra?
And I wonder did Pulp's reunion give them more levarage when trying to finance the new release and thereby focus this new part on Pulp. Also, interesting to note that although he's not interviewed, some of Webbo's personal footage is included, credited as ''Pulp home movies''.
Hi all, I'm Rob and I'm doing the official social media and web content for Fanfare on behalf of Richard and Eve. Really appreciate the enthusiasm for the film here on Bar Italia - I'm currently trying to persuade the Exec Producer to give me an exclusive clip.
We're going to be Twittering a fair bit so hopefully it's okay to mention the new @beatisthelaw Twitter feed - we've put together a great programme of promos content, extras, interviews and articles to pave the way to release of the DVD on the 27th. This'll include a closer look at the Lost Tape including Jarvis's thoughts.
But if you'll have me - and if it doesn't derail a thread that's doing pretty well without us - I'd be happy to chat, pass on questions (possibly ask a couple - there's expertise on here that rivals the band's own) here too.
Eamonn - Just to provide a bit more info on the various versions. There's three films here altogether. Part One - still available on DVD. Part Two - which picks up the story from there. And Fanfare - a repurposing of the story as a more Pulp-centric tale with new interview, archive, home video and other footage. The good news is that Part Two is included on the second disc of the Fanfare package. Hope that helps! It confuses the hell out of me.

The last post on this thread is by someone with the username TieMachine according to the front page but it's not appearing in the thread?! According to his profile he's from thebeatisthelaw website. Speaking of which, there is a podcast here
of a chat between the director of these films, (didn't know she was a Dutch lady! Hardcore indeed) Russell, John Robb and the guy from Chakk taken after the premiere screening of Part 1 of The Beat Is The Law 17 months ago...the one Sturdy was at I think.
Anyway, it's well-worth a listen. Especially when Russell speaks so knowledgeably and humorously. Been a while since I've heard him talk at length and it makes you realise how much we/Pulp missed him. They are perfect foils for each other really, Jarvis and Russell. That blend of intelligence, idiosyncrasy, down-to-earthness and Yorkshire wit.
Interesting to hear him talk about the group's manifesto when in Pulp during the 80's - ''to make fairground music of the future'' as the podcast is named. And when they are comparing the differences between Manchester and Sheffield... very funny.
The website's twitter is being constantly updated, I've just seen. They're trying to get more info/do a piece on the ''lost tape'' - the live Pulp footage from '85 which the DVD will feature.
That wasn't the screening I was at - or if it was, I missed the talk somehow. Russell wasn't there when I went, although I seem to recall John Robb being in the Showroom bar (and Tim Allcard!).
Apparently the Chesterfield video is from the Gotham City gig, which would be 7 July 1985. A clip will be appearing on the Beat Is the Law site soon. (I'm reliably informed that there is also video in existence of the Chesterfield Arts Centre gig of 29 January 1986, complete with Jarvis in a wheelchair - apparently not releasable quality though.)

Hiya - Yup, I'm Rob and I'm doing social media for The Beat is the Law. I dropped a line earlier in the week saying hello and replying to your post from Monday, Eamonn but it got marked as spam although, strangely. the topic was still showing me as the most recent contributor, as you noticed.
In an attempt to avoid getting marked as spam again I'll keep it short! Thanks for the interest and feedback everyone, which is a real motivator with such a huge project as this. The Lost Tape is indeed from the Gotham City Gig at Fascinations Nitespot Chesterfield and we'll be uploading a brief clip as part of a piece on how it was found, the restoration etc within the next week or so.
Does anybody know what the setlist was at Chesterfield by any chance? Could make educated guesses of course ("Little Girl With Blue Eyes" et al) but just wondered if there are any major hidden surprises? A song that was only played once or twice and then binned or anything like that?
No, but the set at the Hallamshire 4 months earlier was:
1. Hydroelectric Dam 2. Tillys Story (part 1) 3. Little Girl (With Blue Eyes) 4. The Will to Power 5. Fairground 6. There's No Emotion 7. The Mark of the Devil 8. Simultaneous 9. Back in LA 10. Breaking Down at My Door 11. Srpski Jeb 12. Life Must Be So Wonderful 13. Being Followed Home 14. Tillys Story (part 2)
(Tilly's Story being a spoken word piece by Mark Tillbrook).
So probably the old faithfuls for the most part, but there's always a chance they threw in something unusual - 'Breaking Down at My Door' was a one-chord thing that sounds like it was at least semi improvised, so maybe they tried something similar at Chesterfield.

As a matter of interest Mark, what's the word-count of your book, roughly?
And what's this about an unreleased Pulp studio recording? I won't be in so I hope there's a podcast made of whatever this Video DJ set is. Also, there's meant to be a new podcast up this week on TheBeatIsTheLaw on the 'lost' live Pulp footage which will be on the DVD.
Hi All - Thanks for the interest in the Twitter Video DJ thing. Head scratching is welcomed LeoVK - it's basically our friends at Playlist Club pretending to be a DJ and tweeting links to videos on YouTube, but we're pitching it as an attempt to recreate a night down the club without leaving your laptop. That means encouraging people to tweet us song requests, virtually flood the virtual loos and do any other bits of storytelling they fancy. The potential for re-enacting Jarvis anecdotes, rewriting history so you did ask that lass who smiled at you during the Jackie Wilson track etc is really exciting. It's like being in a play on Ceefax. TwitPanto is a good example.
We're also offering a complementary preorder for the best dressed clubber - so this is a good opportunity to scan those pre digital snaps you've had in the drawer for the last ten years - and yup, we'll be uploading a previously unreleased Pulp Studio recording as part of the aftershow playlist 'Horror Show at a Stagnant Water Bed'.
Putting lots of time into this so we're going to push Podcast #2 back a week as part of a 'Lost Tape/Week' with this and an article on the website.
And for anyone who hasn't got into Owen Hatherley's writing yet, I can recommend it. His blog is a good place to start.
Thanks for the support everyone. Speaking as the person putting together the online stuff it's really heartening to see people interested!
Marked as spam again. If a mod was able to help with this that'd be great - I'm not sure if I'm using words that are setting this off, or if it's just a filter on new users...

Success! Think I'll quit while I'm ahead but just to say thanks for the interest on this and the podcasts etc - it really makes it worthwhile reading the enthusiasm here on Bar Italia.
And for anyone who hasn't discovered Owen Hatherley's writing on architecture, urban spaces and grumpy bands from the north, I can heartily recommend him. His blog is a good place to start.
As a matter of interest Mark, what's the word-count of your book, roughly?
500,000, give or take. Don't think Uncommon is intended to be another Truth and Beauty, and I'm sure there'll be certain aspects where it'll beat it hands down. The two books set out to achieve very different things, though.

Can someone who uses twitter ask when they're going to put up the next podcast where they discuss the ''Lost Tape'' of Pulp footage? Think it was meant to be up last week.
Frantic indeed...release has been put back a week to the first of June.
However they've put up a pic of the signed posters that they're giving away. Looks ace! (Anyone recognise the scrawled signatures on the right? Looks like Steve at the top, hard to see if it's Nick or Russell's below). Mark's sig reminds me of his notes in early editions of PulpPeople :)
At the end of last week, on their last day of preparation in Sheffield, whilst packing up their gear for their 2011 tour, all the members of Pulp (Jarvis, Russell, Candida, Nick, Steve and Mark) were kind enough to spare some of their precious time to sign some of the film posters (see above closeup image note the Jarvis graffiti).
Quick update - the DVD's have arrived. Here's a photo -
Have to say the packaging is stunning. Beautiful layouts by Designers Republic, slightly glossed cover, 24 page full colour booklet.
Eve Wood's on Radio 6 on Tuesday's Radcliff and Maconie show to talk about the movie. We're discussing possible directors chat afterwards but it's gonna come down to interest so if this is something you fancy let us know.
Right, let's see if anyone's as much of a geek as me. Towards the end of the little Youtube clip of Chesterfield that's on the Beat Is the Law website, there's a tiny bit of the start of There's No Emotion. You might notice that the keyboard sound on this bit is notably different from either the record or other live versions from the same period. Can anyone hazard a guess as to why this might be?

Cannot fucking wait for this like. Just rewatched the first documentary- man, how I wish I'd been making music in Sheffield at that time. Who wouldn't?! After seeing this and reading Sturdy's book it feels like I know quite a bit about the Sheffield scene in the 80s and early 90s, can anyone recommend any other books/films to watch/websites to visit on the subject? Might be playing a gig at the Leadmill in a few months, I'm gonna be like some little fan boy. Hope it's still a good venue.
Maybe its just the fact that we havent heard a clear version of Theres No Emotion live, and obviously when at a gig - you can hear the clarity of the instruments better

Sounds like the Casiotone...? Farfisa was in for repairs and they brought that along instead...?
Close enough! The long version is that at the gig before the Chesterfield one (Limit Club 7 May '85), the Farfisa packed in and they handed it over to John Nicholls from Dig Vis Drill (also an occasional poster on this board and recorder of the Sudan Gerri tape) to have a look cos he was good at electronics and suchlike. He couldn't do anything with it as it turned out, so he lent them his Crumar Multiman S synth while they sent the Farfisa back to Italy to get it fixed up. Hence the slightly different sound on this clip and indeed the Little Girl EP. It's mentioned in passing in Truth & Beauty p120 - from memory I thought I'd gone into slightly more detail than that but guess I must have edited it out because it was all a bit too geeky even for me!

Jeez!! They sent the Farfisa to Italy for repairs?? Candida must seriously love that keyboard. For a band living on the dole, that must have cost them a fair bit to do!
The winners of the signed poster content were just announced on The Beat is the Law's website... and I think there's a few members of this forum among the lucky people. At the very least, one person I'm sure of.;)
Regarding the 'lost tape' footage. Someone has kindly just sent me this flyer for the concert:
A minor point is that it suggests the date was Wednesday 10th July 1985 (not Sunday 7th).
I have also received some setlists from '91 and a flyer for a previously unknown '93 show (assuming it actually took place). Look at PulpWiki if you are interested.
Will wrote: A minor point is that it suggests the date was Wednesday 10th July 1985 (not Sunday 7th).
Interesting as the 10th July 1985 is the date referred to in "Tunnel" which Jarvis later revealed was the date of his first contract with Fire Records.

Isn't that obscure fact covered in Sturdy's book. I'm sure I've read it somewhere unless it's just a case of daja vu!
Is there anyone on here who like me DIDN'T win a signed poster?! Let's hear from you. I'm beginning to feel left out!

Yes, interesting. I should have spotted that!

I'm sure it is in Sturdy's book. Jarvis explained the significance of the date in the unused sleeve notes he wrote for the Masters of the Universe compilation. You can read them here.
Strange one about the date - I'll have got July 7th from the listings in the Sheffield Star from the time. Unless I wrote it down wrong or something...

I was just wondering, is the first part of the DVD the 90 cut. Is that the same version as shown on Sky Arts last year?
..and yes! I'm well aware there is another few hours on the 2 DVD's of top stuff.

I haven't watched it yet, although I am under the impression it is a whole new film covering the period where the last one left off. Shouldn't have been shown anywhere yet.
Is there anyone on here who like me DIDN'T win a signed poster?! Let's hear from you. I'm beginning to feel left out!
I didn't win one! Ah well, I have a fully signed (minus Mark) Common People night cd to keep me happy lol. I say fully signed, as Mark was yet to become an official member.
Nope...I only got a signatureless poster too. I have a copy of "Further Complications" signed to me by Jarvis, but am yet to get something from the whole band. :(
