It's probably nothing but... I was searching for Pulp videos on YouTube yesterday and it appears that they have all been taken down... Which suggests to me that there is going to be a massive marketing exercise about to take place! I hope it's Rough Trade and not an evil recond company like Island or Sony!

It suggests a record deal and new material to me! Or else they have sold everything to another record company.

Do Pulp own their own music now (was it an original ''licenscing deal for x number of albums'' with Island?) or will their 90's/00's output always be Universals? I ak because I know Suede can now do what they want with their material - their best of has came out on Ministry of Sound records.

Who is putting up the money for promo/website for the gigs next summer? Do festival promoters give them an advance that allows the band to drum up their own interest for the reunion or how does it work?

This really is like some sort of weird dream. I've been laid up in bed with EXTREME FLU for the last few days, and hadn't heard about the reunion (and if Russell's there, then it is a reunion, not just the coming-out-of-hibernation they'd promised would eventually happen) until just now. I wasn't as excited as I thought I might be, at least not to start with - I'm a lot *more* excited now knowing Russell's involved, and seeing the Pulp People website up and running again with all the enigmatic, self-deprecating questions made me make a loud "squee!" noise that startled the baby (oh, for anyone who's not a Facebook friend, I have a baby now, hence the lack of participation recently).

I'm still not 100% sure that I'm not just hallucinating this, but it all sounds rather promising.

Not sure but I suspect it will still be with Universal. Didn't Suede's back catalogue only revert to them because Nude had gone bust?

Sorry to join the discussion late. Wanted to point out that Jarvis gave a hint at a reformation several weeks ago on his radio show: Bill Drummond was expressing general displeasure at band reformations, to which Jarvis responded something like "but I have bills to pay!".

Btw, I take the 'playing songs from all through their career' comment to be a reassurance that they will play post-Senior songs, rather than a suggestion they might play pre-popularity songs.

To answer Barcrofts question about if Pulp were big in Australia...

not really - they only ever did 1 tour and that was for This is Hardcore - but they played 3 sold out shows in Sydney..

Jarvis has toured here twice on the back of his solo records and he tends to sell out - his last tour was last December and I think he enjoys visiting us...likes our strong wine...

There is quite a niche britpop scene here - ie going to a pub in inner Sydney and pretending its 1994 playing suede and Pulp songs.

But we do have quite alot of festivals here and if they decide to go abroad - I can see one of our Aussie Festivals snapping them up...Splendour or Meredith for sure. Its bound to happen I think....

has Russell gotten over his fear of flying?

Their final album was on Sony, and a track (Obsessions) is included on the Ministry best of. Also, I doubt Pulp would have made a Fire-style cockup the second time around?

Not really a cockup for the label they were signed to own the rights to the recordings they released - that's just standard, surely?

I'm in touch with Pulp's/Jarvis' publicist because I'm one of the editors of a magazine in New York and she says there definitely isn't going to any press/tour dates in the US. (Mind you, she said she'd notify me if they changed their minds...)

So, if any Americans are waiting to see if they play Webster Hall or Coachella or something, don't. Go to London.

Is this still true?  Any updates?

I have had another exchange with his publicist, but about passes in the UK. I think it's still a 'no' to any US dates. I think they think there's no need to tour there if there isn't any new material. They don't want to play Massy Hall and Terminal 5 if they're closing Glastonbury overseas.

They're wrong wrong wrong!! Can't Coachella just throw a pile of money at them? I'm only half-kidding!

Thanks.  Really depressing though because there is absolutely a need for them to tour here, even without new material.  They never gave us any dates on the farewell tour, and only the east coast got a few shows for This Is Hardcore.  So a lot of old fans never got the chance to see them, in addition to all the new ones that have been gained over the years thanks to the internet, Jarvis' solo ventures, etc.

So they're really confirmed to close Glastonbury?  I had heard they would be subbing for an American headliner on Sunday, but I really hope they do headline.  Pulp deserves it.

Yeah, any chance we can have confirmation on that suggestion they'll be headlining Sunday? That would make my decade!

Seriously, though; I think Pulp's influence on modern indie music and their increased popularity among a certain segment of the U.S. population has not been given enough consideration by the band. They're still a cult band here, but I think they're much, much more popular than they were when they went on hiatus. Hell, even U.S. fashion has caught up with them: big black glasses and stylish sweaters are in! Hmm, who does that remind you of?

Perhaps Jarvis doesn't want to be associated with indie. Don't forget that those indie bands are more inspired by the His n Hers kinda sound and most of all look, since a lot of indie bands are just based on looks, than the sound the band has evolved to: We Love Life and This Is Hardcore.

I was just being hyperbolic, I didn't ask specifically about Glastonbury. I will this week and see if she wants to dish it.

I agree about their standing in the US growing during the hiatus. And I also got screwed on the WLL and Hardcore Tours. The publicist seems pretty eager as well, so something in the band is dismissive of the US, I think.

I agree with Mike, a Coachella headline (or next to) slot would be a decent offering to long-suffering American fans. Moreso if Pulp didn't fancy doing small gigs in NY or LA which wouldn't be too profitable. Add to that, much of the band's (Russell and Candida at least anyway) reluctance to do long bouts of touring during their heyday (and this is the first time they are in such demand since their heyday) and it's probably not surprising that a US tour is seemingly out.

It's a pity America, both North and South, get such a raw deal when it comes to seeing Pulp live. From what I've heard they seem to have a rabid fanbase in certain parts of Latin America, particularly Mexico and countries like Argentina/Chile/Brazil - sizeable enough too I'd imagine to make a tour worthwhile. Jarvis did do most of those countries a couple of years ago between the first and second solo albums. I imagine him, Steve and Nick would be up for playing faraway places but perhaps the others not so much. Russell is not keen on flying I think (?), he's got a family and I can imagine he gets bored easily of hanging around. Ditto Candida...And Mark has his own film work in the UK. Judging by comments pre-split, Pulp didn't seem to mean much to him anymore towards the end, maybe the reunion will change that.

But it's very possibly the only time they'll do this, certainly the only time where they'll have sufficient interest for them to name their price, so a world tour, though very unPulp-like in concept would be a great reward to their fans spread around the globe.

Pulp would be a strong second-billed act at Coachella, or could headline Pitchfork or ATP NY (if that happens next year). One of these plus a handful of the major markets would be perfect. Doubt it will happen, though.

If they sold out a 3700 capacity venue in New York in 1998, what could they do in 2010?

It would never happen, there just wouldn't be enough money in it for them, but imagine if Pulp curated ATP... it would be amazing.

Would the Americans/Canadians among you consider traversing the Atlantic to see them play in Europe?

If that's my only option. But do you know how expensive that is? $1300 just for the flight. We're in the middle of the second Great Depression, after all.

I've already planned to make the trek. Just waiting to see what other shows pop up.
You can always find a flight for under $1000. Besides, its PULP!

Not from LA, sadly. I can fly from New York for $675, but flights from LA to New York in June/July are $400+ for some reason. Yes, it's Pulp, and I'll fly out just for them, of course, but the thing is, I shouldn't have to.
