I love those questions on the website, you can see they have thought about the reactions and came with quite a lot self-deprecating questions. It's genuine, not like that The Verve reunion.

OMG - news of the year! clap.gif

I am surprised to hear Russell's on board.

Let's hope for a WLL deluxe edition or maybe even a new EP. Just another Best of would be rather pointless. The revived pulppeople site looks promising, so I'm quite confident. There must be some music in the pipeline.

Do you think there will be more shows in continental Europe?

If not, team Germany (aka: me smile) is going to grace the Hyde Park with its presence.

I seriously doubt they'll make any new music. With Blur new music makes more sense- all the members are still heavily involved with making music and still live that kinda lifestyle, but Pulp, especially Russell and Nick, don't have those kind of lives at all. But with Russell on board, just reunion shows are enough for me.

And I know I shouldn't want just gigs, I shouldn't be wallowing in some sort of nostalgia.

But I guess my thoughts are:

"It was too long ago, shouldn't care anymore, but what I'm wanting to know- is it as good as before?"

I wouldn't be surprised if there was some new material. Jarvis obviously has never stopped writing, and Steve has kept his hand in. And Russell doesn't strike me as the kind of person who would be satisfied if it was a mere exercise in nostalgia. And, who knows, Candida, Nick and Mark have had plenty of time to stockpile ideas!

I agree with Sturdy on this. However, I think a hit single is too much to ask. I still think they could get a top 10 album (like "We Love Life") though.

I don't want to sound ungrateful in the face of such fantastic news, but there must be some new music to come somewhere along the line. There's nothing worse than a reunion that's just a lazy, easy money-making nostalgia trip. Think of all those bands from the 70's and 80's that eternally do the rounds at Butlins and the like, having died an artistic death and suffering severely from many lack of credibility (if they ever possessed any). I'd rather Pulp stayed as a wonderful memory from the past than have them become parodies of themselves. Fair enough to start again with the familiar stuff, but I hope the reunion doesn't end there.

So the question is really "What made them change their minds?"

They never really went away. Wasn't always just a break, rather than an official split? I've been getting laughed at for years by my friends for telling them Pulp would be back one day. I kept the faith!

I'm in touch with Pulp's/Jarvis' publicist because I'm one of the editors of a magazine in New York and she says there definitely isn't going to any press/tour dates in the US. (Mind you, she said she'd notify me if they changed their minds...)

So, if any Americans are waiting to see if they play Webster Hall or Coachella or something, don't. Go to London.

Well, I guess it won't be a full return for the band. I'm always a bit sceptical. Just trying to get some cash in for some members?

I reckon it's partly "Why not?" and also partly "It's now or never!"

Because why shouldn't they reform? They get to have an amazing time playing much loved songs they haven't played in years at huge gigs, fans get to see the band live again, the band also get a huge payday which I think they all deserve as, with the exception of Jarvis, none of them are celebrities earning mega bucks.

They're not getting any younger so they can't really um and err about this any longer. They play a summer of great gigs, have a blast, part ways once again, everyone goes home happy, the band legacy remains intact.

It's a win-win situation... for everyone but us, the indie purists.

Pulp purists please. Or pop...not that fucking 'i' word. Anyway...

Although I'm delighted this is happening the timing and manner of the announcement is, not under-whelming, but a little 'normal' for a group as idiosyncratic as Pulp don't you think?(Although the official site's rendering of the news is fantastic and had me smiling so much when I saw it)
I mean their last show at Magna was an exercise in humility as much as creativity. They put together a music festival of which they, although the star turn, were in their own minds just one of the artists playing.

This comeback, coming hot on the heels of another 'Britpop' group with whom they are most commonly associated, probably seems predictable to many. Looking round at various sites, forums and listening to the radio last night, it's great to see and hear the goodwill for the group doesn't seem to have diminished since their disappearance in December 2002. The more cynical have made points that as a sad Pulp fan, I feel obliged to defend but maybe there's a bit of truth in some of them.

If it's purely for a few bob fair enough. But I've seen comments like ''Suede and Blur paved the way for Pulp's initial success, it's no surprise that their reunions are doing the same again'' and ''Well his (JC's) solo career has hardly set the world alight, pretty predictable he's wheeling out his gang of misfits while they can still perform''...now I don't doubt that Pulp have had offers before now that they could have taken-up but maybe the success of their above-mentioned contemporaries' returns has given them more leverage. The point about Jarvis' solo career is a bit silly and sad really. Jarvis consciously released solo albums on a label whose ethos is as far away from rampant commercialism and chart domination as possible. As for the numpty who said ''So it's not even the original line-up yet they mention that it is twice on the press-release just to drum-up more interest''...though the PR should have used 'classic' for 'original' surely?

I guess I might have expected something more restrained befitting these modest Sheffieldites like Jarvis casually announcing on his radio show that they were going to rehearse old songs and possibly have a go at new ones and see what happens. Or not say anything, then release a stand-alone single/EP and announce a tour.

As it is, of course I'm thrilled and probably being unfair with the above. For all we know they've swatted down offers until now and finally decided
'Well if you think there'll be enough interest ok then..why not give it a go?''

I don't envisage a long tour, I'd be surprised if there were more than half a dozen more dates scattered around the continent. Pulp, DC era aside, were never the type to over-stretch themselves when it came to touring and 15 years later I don't think that's going to change. I imagine Russell, Mark and Candida in particular will not be keen for it to drag on. An intimate gig or two for lapsed Pulp people or in Sheffield where they play rarer stuff would be very nice indeed though.

I'd be very surprised if there was new material, especially an album's worth but who knows? It will be interesting to find out more when they start doing press for this. Jarvis might speak about it a bit next Sunday on his show. Maybe Sturdy can get Nick or Russell's view on it (hint hint).

An interesting thought, if they do write any more material, is that they're no longer with Island Records. Obviously it was Island that really fuckied up on the release of WLL and associated singles, and I imagine that the door is pretty much open at Rough Trade if they're interested in releasing anything new..

I suppose what I'm getting at is that they're completely free, which is unusual for a band in their position, compared to, say, Blur, who look like they will forever be chained to EMI. It's pretty exciting!

I think they should be encouraged by the other reunions, & if they're doing it for the money (which I doubt) then fair enough. Just because someone's an artist, you still need money to live in this world.

I agree with Eamon's point that Jarvis never much sought commercial success with his solo work, or he'd have played on using Pulp songs to draw people to his gigs. So anyone questioning artistic integrity should take a look at that.

As for new material, didn't they always want one no.1 single? I think they'll try, especially if the shows go well. Which I'm sure they will - the only time I ever remember Pulp dissapointing live is when they played The Trees on TOTP.
I seriously doubt it'll be anything short of great, it'll probably be brilliant!

I guess it will be allright. Like the people above are saying, Jarvis isn't that commercial to just get the old band out and to push a new solo album. I'm looking forward to the artistic contribution of Russell to the TIH songss. I wonder if it's gonna add something.

Does anyone know if Pulp are/ were big in Australia? as I'll be over there in the second half of next year, and would love to think I could see them there too if they were to play a bigger tour!

Hopefully they'll feel inspired to take a fresh look at the setlist. In the last few years I found it very formulaic for the most part - the likes of Babies, Something Changed and Sorted just got hammered to death. The return of Russell might inspire a few more daring digs into the back catalogue - would be nice to have some of the violin tour-de-forces like She's a Lady or even some of the Seps-era stuff.

Agreed, it would be a waste to have Russell on board & not play Separations (the song) with full violin intro.

Okay now we're already getting into (irrational?) hopes, what about reissue tracks?
Can anyone see them dusting off Live On?
Tho' I think the most likely would be We Can Dance Again.
Oh, & doesn't a certain band member (I think it was Nick?) love Don't Lose It?

I remember thinking I Want You sounded great at the Eden Project, & that's one of my favourites right up there with Little Girl (with blue eyes).

Maybe Russell could do the extended The Fear solo, or the piano intro to This Is Hardcore, on violin?

But what I really want to hear is OU.

Although I never got to hear Underware or Common People with Russell, I'm really looking forward to that. I mean, there's no way they'd be left out right?

Well, it will be pretty easy to judge from the set-list if they're doing it for the money or not. If there's just there most commercially successfully songs -then it's obvious. If they dare (and i really hope they do) to mix in other stuff then this can be interesting.

Anyway if this has any impact in Jarvis future song-writing and music making- cheers!

A box set of DC-era singles was released in Austrailia. Also, Jarvis was interviewd on their radio in 1998. I have no idea if they enjoyed commercial success, I only have one Australian friend, & he's a metaler.

OU would be amazing, but I suppose Death comes to town or Death II would allow me to die very, very happy.

That revived official website turned me back into a 13 year old again just for a couple of minutes!

I'm dying to make imaginary setlists but it's just too sad! My Legendary Girlfriend would suit me. Either
Death II and Countdown would be fine by me too. On the other hand I hope they don't neclect WLL as I love a lot of tunes on there.

It'll be nice to see the band with some pals this time around. I think every time I have seen them in the past I have ended up watching on my own.
