Was "FEELINGCALLEDLOVE" considered as the final single off "Different Class"? I ask because two of the b-sides are versions of this track and the packaging is more appropriate for this song than "Something Changed". Anyone?

I think it was.  From memory there was something in one of the Pulp People newsletters of the time saying that the next single would be "Either Something Changed or Feeling Called Love". There might be some clues in the Promos section of Acrylic Afternoons as well.

I seem to remember it was. It may have done quite well - I remember it stood out as an album track on first listen as something I liked instantly (saying that there's not much on DC that didn't)

There was, I have that issue. It was along the lines of 'Pulp are still trying to decide wether to release FEELINGCALLEDLOVE or Something Changed as the next single'.
Looks like Moloko's money was on FEELINGCALLEDLOVE!

My word! People are still interested in Pulp!

I'm currently listening to some lovely Venini and I began googling...and found this.

In response to the above, I had always wondered whether 'The Fear' had similarly been thought of as a single, too. What with an extended version being prepared and all that...

"The Fear" was released as a radio promo in the US. The lead track is shorter than the album version (it fades out about a third of the way through the instrumental ending). The CD also contains "Research Hook" which is a 10 second sample of the chorus.

Feelingcalledlove as a single?! It's hardly the most radio friendly track is it?

The chorus is but the long intro would probably have had to be chopped substantially for radio. Argualy the most satisfying song on DC, the way it builds still gets me.
The live version from Glasto'98 is possibly my favourite live performance of a Pulp song.

Yeah obviously it's a great song in that it's a slow build, but such a song does not a good single make. It has spoken word verses! The vocals don't come in till 1:19!

Can anyone actually name a single by a huge chart band which is half spoken word, only really has one melody and is 6 and a half minutes long?

Though as you say presumably the single version would have been heavily edited- which makes me very curious as to how it would have turned out.

Amazing tune though. Listening to it now for the first time in nearly a year i think.

Pulp could have released a three minute recording of them farting as the last Different Class single and it would have been a hit such was their popularity at the time. I think you're right though - their initial manifesto for DC while writing it was to make an album of a dozen pop songs any one of which could be a single; and that falls down a bit with FEELING. As the all-important first single from an album it wouldn't have made sense. But once the first single from a record is a hit you can trade on a lot of goodwill in terms of airplay and being the ''in'' thing for subsequent singles regardless of their quality or even commercial appeal.

The best version by far I've heard of this song was on the Homelands bootleg. I had a very good version of either Leeds or Reading 2000, but I can't find the damned thing now.

It was Leeds 2000. I have fond memories of that one as I was in the audience. Then to my delight it was broadcast on Radio 1 later in the year. 6music then came along and broadcast the missing tracks from Leeds meaning it's possible to get hold of all the songs played in the set. If you've mislaid it I'll upload when I get a chance.

I can't think of any but "Parklife" by Blur has spoken verses although it's only 3 minutes long.

I think "FEELINGCALLEDLOVE" would have made a good single because of the chorus but the intro would have needed editing. I can't think what else off the album would have made a good final single... maybe "Monday Morning" with the shouty bits near the end removed...

Parklife- good point. Also Once In A Lifetime by the Talking Heads. But they're still very different songs.

Yeah the chorus for FEELING.. is one of the best on the album. I always think it's such a shame that they released Underwear as a b side, that could have been a huuuge hit if it had been released by itself.

But yeah, I think Something Changed was the right choice, even though it didn't do well..Monday Morning, Live Bed Show, I Spy: non of them sit right as a single.

Underwear was originally meant to be double A but the hugeness of Common People rendered that a bit silly. It was too good not to be on the album so has the rare position of being both a B-side and album track.

And Something Changed did very well especially considering it was the 4th single from an album - top ten (at ten) and sold over 100,000 copies. Probably would have done even better had the 2CD singles not shared the same tracklistings.

This is complete guesswork here, but maybe Pulp wanted FEELING... as a single so they could clear up some unfinished business - sort of like "Remember how we thought My Legendary Girlfriend could have been far bigger with a decent label behind it? Well now's our chance!" Presumably someone from Rough Trade or Island proceeded to talk sense into them...

Feeling Called Loe was always one of the songs on the album I used to skip - however as I have gotten older and more mature, I have been able to appreciate the dark nature of the song .

As a single? I really really do not know - it has a catchy chorus which would have been easily remembered (even by the chavs of the day).... however I think that if it was to be "radio edited" - it would lose the charm of the song. I seem to recall that Jarvis was never happy about the radio edit of Common People as it cut out the "most important part" of the song.

When I found it on my hard drive it appears that it's 1 file all as 1 track - so I will have to spend a little time seperating all the songs. I'm just awaiting a new PC to be delivered to me then get it tweaked and uploaded!
