After years of trying to track this down, ironically it turns-up on the very day that Jarvis is asked on Marc Riley's radio programme whether there are any plans to release it! He said he'd look into streaming it on his website but Jarvis and efficiency do not make good bedfellows as we all know. So to save all that waiting, fill your boots with these links:

Part 1: http://highlyunlikely.net/video/outsiderart/JourneysIntoTheOutside-part1.abc

Part 2: http://highlyunlikely.net/video/outsiderart/JourneysIntoTheOutside-part2.abc

For those unaware of this, ''Journeys Into The Outside'' was a 3-part programme aired by Channel 4 in the spring of 1999 following Jarvis to France, USA, Mexico and India as he met ordinary people who had built/designed the most unusual things in their homes and gardens. Basically he wanted to find-out what had driven them to do this.

The two links each have a programme and a half on them (roughly 80 minutes). The introduction at the start of the first episode with Jarvis explaining the background of the idea behind doing this is very reminiscent to the earlier Babies video and the film that went with 'Do You Remember The First Time?' in terms of the film-style used.

Scary to think that Jarvis talks about it being almost a decade since the book ''Outsider Art'' inspired the theme of his thesis at St Martins' Art College and that it's only now he has the chance to travel to see all these things he studied. Scary because it's now a further decade since these programmes were broadcast.

I think they were recorded just after the release of This Is Hardcore. It must have been quite refreshing for Jarvis that none of the people he interviewed had the foggiest idea who he was! I've only seen the first one and though some of the stuff might be of questionable merit, artistic or otherwise, it's pretty fascinating viewing all the same - particularly the story of Ferdinand Cheval (Pulp visited his palace during the Different Class European tour as showin in the FEELING CALLED LIVE video). And Jarvis' French also seems better than it is these days!
Enjoy.

I remember watching that programme!  It sounded like a dull idea for a programme on paper, but was actually very interesting/entertaining. I'd love watch them all over again, although I'm sure if I looked hard enough I'd find them taped on one of my videos somewhere.............see 10 years ago in the days when we still did stuff like that.

I've still got my copy of this on the old VHS as well but I've nothing to play it on anymore. Damn this digital age!

Hmm, isn't it working for anyone? I was told you need a vlc player to play them but they both work for me on Windows Media Player as they're just normal .avi files.

Hm, they don't seem to work on my iMac. But, I downloaded them and changed the extension to .avi and now I can watch them. Great, thanks! Will watch it tonight I think.
