Bit surprised at this.  Really don't like the song.  Maybe Girls Like it Too will be on the b-side.

Judging by some of the lyrics transcribed by Will on PulpWiki, the inspiration for ''I Found Myself Looking For God'' seems to draw on Jarvis' time struggling in a wheel-chair/on crutches after his Spiderman impression led to his fall from a 1st floor flat on Division Street.

A September Double A-Side of ''Girls Like It Too''/''I Never Said I Was Deep'' would be boss.

Do double As get released any more?

But better than The Trees/Sunrise?  errr maybe!     I know Sorted/Misshapes was double A, but wasn't Common People/Underwear supposed to have been?

Best double A ever (excluding Pulp); maybe Go Buddy Go/Peaches - Stranglers, though I have a pile of singles where I ended up prefering the flip side. I'm pretty sure that singles I have from the sixties never specified A and B, even though one side was generally recognised as the main track.

Oasis released a double A back in 2003, Little By Little/She Is Love.

Seconded.

And the comment about Strawberry Fields/Penny Lane too. Although, of course, anything written by Lennon (Strawberry Fields) is far superior to anything written by McCartney(Penny Lane).

Never really understood why there were double A-sides in general.

In the case of the Beatles, it was probably bonafide as most singles didn't appear on the albums, so both tracks were of interest.  I think the Jam had a similar philosophy, though in their case the second A side wasn't particulary good.

Otherwise, you used to get talentless cunts like Robson & Jerome knocking out double A-sides for the grannies, and so they could sing two different songs on TOTP.

I suspect Mis-shapes was made a double A-side due to the expected controversy and that at least one side would get played on the radio (of course, Sorted was played everywhere once the bloke from Camden Town was mashed - uurgh!)

BAN THIS SICK STUNT!

I still don't know what was behind The Trees/Sunrise decision.  Maybe they thought at least one of the songs would get on the radio.

Last double a-side I bought was The Fallen / L. Wells by Franz Ferdinand in 2006ish I think...? One track will invariably end up with b-side status anyway so it is pretty pointless...usually because the record companies will often only pay out to make a video for one song. I think L Wells had a low-budget one that hardly ever got played however.

Anything?   Bit Harsh!  I'm not a fan of Lennon's happy clappy efforts and he had his share of duff Beatles/solo tracks, so I wouldn't entirely agree with that.

I prefer Lennon on the whole, but McCartney did some pretty good stuff with the Beatles (Let it Be, Hey Jude, Yesterday, Michelle, Get Back ...) and even some decent stuff post-Beatles.

I've never agreed with this.  I think the problem is just that McCartney lacks quality control; he has some brilliant songs and some godawful horrible cheesy ones, and he himself doesn't seem to be able to distinguish between them, resulting in a lot of dreadful MOR slop used as a stick to beat him.  Lennon's own musical crimes - especially the aforementioned hippy dross - get overlooked because of his excellent period in 1966-68, but there are some Lennon songs on Abbey Road and Let It Be which are proper shit, and his solo albums aren't any better than McCartney's.

But this is the sort of argument which used to cause wars to break out, and has nothing to do with Pulp, so I'm going to be quiet now.

The giant stack of Motown singles I've just been ploughing through on my blog (which I don't think I've plugged quite enough in this thread yet) all definitely had clearly defined A- and B-sides, though quite often the B-sides are better than the actual "singles".

I remember reading somewhere (possibly in the Martin Aston book) that Pulp wanted to release "Sorted" but Island weren't happy at a slow song being released as a single and insisted in having a faster song there too.

Yeah, pretty much anything!  When Lennon didn't quite get it right, it was just a bit off, but when McCartney gets it's wrong, it's pure and utter cheese.  I think he had some good stuff with the Beatles, but can't think of one decent solo recording from him.  If you compare their two Xmas songs, that just about sums up the difference.

Anyway, as Steve says, this is the sort of argument that causes wars to break out, and I've noticed how civilised and on-topic you all are on here, (exact opposite of the other band forum I visit)  so I'll shut up now!

The album Plastic Ono Band is better than everything Macca has ever done. Including Beatles. That album wipes all the other Beatles away.

Maybe different on Motown, but not always on RCA and Parlophone (well in the UK anyway).  As an example, this is a single I do have and the best picture I could get off ebay.    Nothing obvious.

"During Pulp's Top Of The Pops performance of Mis-Shapes last week, Jarvis pulled out the copy of the Daily Mirror featuring the headline and pretended to read it."

Haha, I never knew this. Nice one Jarvis!

Jarvis hasn't released a commercially viable single in 12 years. I don't know why you'd expect him to change.

Unless I am very much mistaken (which is often the case!) they only did 'Sorted' on Top Of The Pops.

Don't Let Him Waste Your Time and Bad Cover Version both sounded good on the radio the few times I heard them.

They definitely did Mis-shapes too (21st September 1995, to be specific...) And Jarvis did read the Daily Mirror during it.  I used to have that actual performance on youtube, but it got taken down along with a bunch of others *sigh*

Personally I think Sunrise, Bad Cover Version, Cunts (OK, it was download only, but I believe it charted) and Fat Kidz were all pretty good singles.  I'm not too bothered about their commercial viability.  I can't see anything Jarvis doing likely to trouble the charts too much.

PS Does anyone have the "clean" version of Cunts ?  I'd love to hear it!

People think John Lennon is better cause he's dead. End of story. He wrote two good songs as a solo artist- Oh Yoko and How do you sleep or whatever it was called. Rest of it was all shit. McCartney had all the big ideas (like the second side of Abbey Road, for example). Lennons' career had pretty much dropped off before he died, he hadn't made a decent record or played any good gigs in quite a few years.

McCartney was a better lyricist too. 'For No-one' and 'Eleanor Rigby' have pretty much the best lyrics of the Beatles career.

What's wrong with the 'unclean' version?  Is anyone here offended by it?  Just wondering.

(Oops sorry - made a hash of the quoting on this one - it was Arrgee that asked this, not Fuss Free - sorry)

The man was on a 5 year sabatical before his dead and just returned with a, indeed mediocre, record. Lennon did write some classic songs. Listen to the Plastic Ono Band album, which is quite emotional and has got some great lyrics.

And, I would even take Harrison over Macca any day.
