Let's just say, for the sake of argument, that there's an online offer where you can buy a copy of Truth & Beauty for a tenner or something.

It's the original edition, but it includes a little printed supplement (sort of like a fanzine) with new extra stuff in it - like new interviews with protagonists who weren't in the original book, and unpublished photos and maybe some other stuff.

Would there be any interest in something like this?

How many word/pages are we talking here, Mark? Would it be worth a tenner if you were to buy it purely for the supplement?

No, it definitely wouldn't be worth a tenner just for the supplement. It would mainly be aimed at people who don't already have a copy of the book, really.

Personally signed by the author though!

I think I can speak on behalf of the majority here - that we all appriciated your work in the first place regarding your book and some of us got to enjoy the launch party at the Washington too - the book was a perfect read, and left room for a follow on kind of thing so I am personally all for the addition mate

When I first read the title of this thread I thought it was an update of sorts - but then there's not been much to update since the book's release which was 6 months or so after the band's hiatus which obviously remains in place today. Having said that, I suppose you could opine on the demos of previously unreleased songs that have appeared via the reissues or this very website over the past couple of years as well as Jarvis' solo career.

I imagine Havenhand is one of the Pulp protagonists you'd feature in this...I remember asking him (and him giving great, detailed answers) a host of questions on here when he first started posting (summer '07 I think - you should be able to find the original thread).

I imagine any Jarvis involvement is fruitless which is such a shame. I honestly think he'd thrive on answering questions on obscure stuff rather than the usual guff.
I'd be equally interested in Russell's views - both men are equally as quotable and interesting and (though I haven't read it in 5 years) I remember being a tad disappointed that there wasn't more Russell featured in the original - considering you appear to be a fairly casual acquaintance with the man (though that may have materialised after?).

Above all though, I'd love to hear Mark Webber's tale of life in the band, from hanger-onner, odd-jobs man, occassional extra-keyboardist/guitarist live, fully-fledged member, main guitar player to...what seemed fairly disinterested at the end.

I've often been tempted to re-read Truth And Beauty - I've often used it as a source for finding details of demos and lost songs (especially when the reissues came out) but I already spend too much time on here to get too lost in what essentially is the Pulp bible. I do remember on reading it originally that there were a few things that you hadn't mentioned or that I wanted to find out more (not much mind you, it was a fairly comprehensive job you did!) but none of them come to mind now. Actually one...I may be wrong but I think I recall reading elsewhere that Jarvis worked in a centre for handicapped children at one stage during the 80s which struck me as very interesting. Maybe he never gave quotes to the press on that or just mentioned it in passing...Again though, further evidence that if you had Jarvis in a room for an hour I'm sure you'd get fantastic stuff (not just geeky things that we devour) out of him.

To answer your original question, it goes without saying that I'd get it.

I think it's a good idea Mark, what with Jarvis' new record coming out soon, good time to do it methinks.
Hope you're well by the way.

I'd be interested in just buying the supplement, if possible.

Mark, may I recommend having another go at contacting Jarvis? Judging by the Making of Common People and songwriting BBC docs, he's a lot more willing to talk about Pulp and their past than he was circa We Love Life, when the band was winding down and he was planning to "retire" to Paris.

Additionally, new quotes from Candida, Steve and Mark would be really great.

Of course, this all may be beyond the scope of a supplement. Just my thoughts.

Sadly, I think you need to wave some cash in Jarv's face to get him to schedule you in... but, if you are willing to fork out some money, he's always available.

Well I for one am trying to get tickets for the Experimenta strand at the London Film Festival. Unfortunately, the press launch doesn't happen until Wednesday and public tickets don't go on sale until the 26th.

If, and it's a MASSIVE if, I get tickets, and IF I happen to get to talk to you-know-who (which is doubtful, I mean it has been 9 years since I last spoke to him) is there any message you would like me to pass on?

Yeah, tell him that we love him and we hope he's happy with his lot in life.

And will he ring Jarvis up one of these years and tell him he'd like the band to re-convene and try to write a few songs and see what happens.

I would tend to think bringing up Pulp with Mark whilst he's paneling the London Film Festival would result in an abrupt end to your conversation.

I get the impression Mark wants his work with experimental film to be taken seriously. Bringing up Pulp at the film festival is a bit like showing at an old schoolmate's workplace and telling embarrassing stories about the time he got wasted and threw up on the girl he fancied.

If you want the conversation to go somewhere, you might try something like: "Ok Mark. F, Marry, Kill: George Kuchar, Kenneth Anger, & Hollis Frampton."

I wouldn't be that crass, Fuss Free! I got very interested in Mark's work in avant garde cinema, both at "Little Stabs" and at the various film programmes he did in the late 90's. I gave a very detailed report on the "Day of Reckoning" to the fan club magazine, which was an absolutely astounding programme, both thought provoking and eye opening, not really morbid at all, rather exhilarating really. I just wish more people had gone to it, that's all.

There are loads of non-Pulp questions I'd love to ask Mark, one in particular about a Brakhage film that he screened at the above programme, what his thoughts on Hungarian composer Arvo Part were, if he is working on or has plans to screen any of his own films (he did show a couple of his own films at LS@H 2nd birthday, one involving a street scene in Rotterdam in during a light rainstorm and another which involved running around a shopping precinct. Anyone who has the "Hits" DVD has seen the footage Mark took of the band during the rehearsals for His n Hers - the most endering sequence being Russell hunting a sparrow in the rehearsal room, with Mark laughing behind the camera) and also about the book he co-wrote with Owen Land, and "Critical Mass" the new project he's working on.

Then, and only then, and only if he himself brings it up, would I dare to ask him about Pulp.

Then again, as I have mentioned before, what with Fantastic Mr. Fox being the opening film at LFF this year, it may be inevitable.
