Jarvis Cocker will release his as-yet untitled second solo album on May 18, NME.COM can reveal.

The follow-up to 2006's 'Jarvis' was produced in the most by Steve Albini (Pixies, Nirvana, The Breeders) in Albini's Chicago studio in January.

The tracklisting of the former Pulp frontman's new LP is yet to be finalised.

However, songs likely to make the final cut include 'Angela', 'Pilchard', 'I Told You Twice (Leftovers)', 'Hold Still', 'Fuckingsong', 'Further Complications' and 'You're In My Eyes (Discosong)'.

Keep checking NME.COM for more details on the album.

May 18 wohooo :)

May 18th! Hoorah! Soemone predicted 1st week of May so not too far off the mark.

A non-Christmas release could also actually mean that Jarvis gets deservedly higher up the charts, although I doubt he will be overly concerned with that.

I will look forward to it :)

That is good news. Not so far away it is, a little more than 2 months. Well, I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully it'll be a bit more rocking than the last album.

Steve Albini is a weird/wise choice, when you come to think of it. Weird because he mostly produces american bands, but wise coz Jarv's new songs, the heavy ones, tend to sound like what he's produced before. It could be a hit or miss really.

Two weeks off with the release date, not too bad!

Albini is an intriguing choice. He's produced the best albums by The Manics and The Auteurs. His reputation ties-in with the ''heavier sound'' that Jarvis has stated he was going for with this record. I wonder if he returned to Sheffield (Yellowarch Studios most likely) to finish the rest of the recording.

Or to Paris perhaps. Isn't that were much of the vocals of the first solo record were recorded? I suppose a single is coming out quickly, or perhaps a MySpace preview just like Cunts..

I hope this is true. I think Albini is the perfect guy to make the album rock, but in a raw, edgy way. He's worked with David Gedge -- both Wedding Present and Cinerama.

I lived in Chicago for 7 years and Jarvis never bothered to pay a visit. I leave, and then he starts playing festivals and recording albums there.

Clearly, this is personal.

Pitchfork weighs in.

I can't tell, though, where they got these quotes and info from. Did they interview him directly? I can't find anything on Rough Trade's website or Jarvis' MySpace.

NME scooped Pitchfork on the date, but Pitchfork has the full story, including album art.

That shouldn't surprise anyone since Pitchfork has close ties to Steve Albini (who works cheap, apparently).

*pedantic cough* I will point out that he also played Coachella (outside LA), San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago, as well as a night in Vancouver, BC.

Also, just noticed this tidbit:

Homewrecker!" ("an absolute racket featuring saxophone from Steve Mackey [he played on The Stooges' 'Funhouse', you know]"

Actually, Steve Mackay is the Stooges' sax player. And I'm guessing he'll be playing with our man Steve Mackey on that track. Together finally!

Nice album cover, if that is indeed the final version.

Listening again to Told You Twice, it has quite a Neil Young feel.

There is, apparently, a sampler/preview record floating around. I think it's on vinyl. This could be where Pitchfork got it's info.

Just seen this. Great name for the album (even if it's lifted from a song of the same name).
As for the sleeve...is that really it? Would have expected a bit more fanfare if so. And a bit strange that it should be revealed before the tracklist. Also, the font and arrow thing pointing to Jarvis is a replica of the first record. Maybe he just likes it a lot...

As for the concise, interesting comments from Jarvis about the songs themselves - they're of a similar style to how he spoke of the 'new' tracks on the reissues. They (the song descriptions) sound smart, but only in a 'I had a chance to think of a short, clever way to describe some of the new songs' as opposed to Jarvis having spoken the words in an interview. Perhaps they come from the sampler that Fuss Free says is apparently doing the rounds...(where did you hear that Fuss Free?).

And thank God, ''Told You Twice'' hasn't fallen through the cracks - I was so disappointed not to hear it live in Manchester and I'm not sure he played it at all during the 'Rough at 30' tour. There's still just the one recording of it on youtube from a US show last summer.

I'm tempted to let keep my sources a mystery, but, what the hell... John Mulvey of Uncut Magazine claims to have said sampler. He does not, however, offer an opinion. Which means he could be lying.

The full press release below. Note that Jarvis says the songs will be made available on March 26th (on jarvspace?):

NOTES ON THE ALBUM SO FAR

In January of this year we went to the United States to record at Steve Albinis studio, Electrical Audio, in Chicago. Between the 3rd & the 24th of January we recorded 15. Im sorry that you cant hear them yet but due to the idiosyncratic way in which Electrical Audio functions, the whole record will not be fully mixed until the 25th of March. Ho-Hum. (I hope this is not coming across like a school-kids excuse for not handing his homework in on time)

Please allow me to anticipate some of the questions you might have:

1 WHY CHICAGO? WHY STEVE ALBINI?

Last year we were invited to play at the Pitchfork festival in Chicago during July. Steve Mackey (he plays the bass, you know) suggested that we try recording some songs with Steve Albini whilst we were in town. This made sense on many levels to go all that way just to play one show seemed a bit wasteful  (eco-awareness) Plus, I had already decided that I wanted this record to be more of a group effort than the last one. So we had worked songs out in rehearsal rather than me delivering them fully-written & now I wanted to record them in an environment where we could all play at the same time & hopefully capture something of the spirit of a band all working together, all aiming in the same direction (though at what I really couldnt say). Electrical Audio (Albinis studio) is specifically designed to record bands in that way.

Plus, it was very cheap.

(The two songs we tried out in July worked out , so we booked time in January to finish the album. The pound collapsed against the dollar in the interim).

2 WHO DOES WHAT ON THE SONGS RECORDED SO FAR?

Jarvis sings & plays various bits & pieces.
Steve Mackey plays the bass
Ross Orton plays the drums
Simon Stafford plays keyboards & sings backing vocals
Tim McCall plays the guitar in the right-hand speaker
Martin Craft plays the guitar in the left-hand speaker + occasional keyboards & backing vocals

This applies to all the songs so far except Pilchard where Jarvis plays the guitar in the left-hand speaker & Simon & Martin had a lie-down.

Jarvis also played the synthesiser on Fuckingsong & Youre in my Eyes(Discosong).

Extra musicians:
Daniel Knox sings backing vocals on Angela & Hold Still
Mary Lattimore plays harp on Hold Still & Youre in my Eyes (Discosong)
Yvonne Gage, Leveeta Renee Robinson & Shawn Roberts are the heavenly choir on Youre in my Eyes (Discosong).

3 HAS JARVIS GONE ROCK?

No but during the course of touring his last record he discovered that , with this band, he COULD rock & so hed be a fool not to. (When the situation demanded it).

4 WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE SONGS ON THE ALBUM?

Hmmm thats a toughie. Especially seeing as the track-listing hasnt been finalised yet but Ill tell you a bit about all the other songs we recorded.( Theyll all see the light of day in some shape or form, anyway.) SLUSH is a song I wrote whilst aboard a ship that was sailing up the west coast of Greenland last year. I guess that slush will be the ultimate outcome of global warming.  CAUCASIAN BLUES is an attempt  to understand the pain of a man whose Honda Goldwing has run out of petrol. I NEVER SAID I WAS DEEP  is the phrase that I would like carved on my tombstone. GIRLS LIKE IT TOO takes its title from a phrase in one of the speeches made at John Peels funeral. THE NIGHT THEY LET ME OUT OF THE HOME portrays the difficulties of using public transport whilst on crutches. APPARENTLY is about how you can be in love with someone without realising it. I FOUND MYSELF LOOKING FOR GOD lists unlikely places one can look for spiritual enlightenment  & HOMEWRECKER! is an absolute racket featuring saxophone from Steve Mackay (he played on The Stooges Funhouse, you know) .

The record wont feature all of these songs (that would make it too long) but we will have a finalised running order available from March 26th onwards if you are interested. (+ you can hear all the songs then, too).

& FINALLY WHATS WITH THE BEARD?

I grew it to keep my face warm in the Arctic & then I kind of got attached to it. (The amount of grey in it horrified me at first but now I think it acts as a handy reminder of my own mortality.)

Thankyou for taking the time to read these notes.

Further complications await.

Great stuff FussFree. Not sure where you digged that out from but very interesting indeed...

So this time two weeks we'll have a very good idea if the man has written the record of his career. Strange that he should rush to get it out there almost two months ahead of the physical release? Doesn't he give a shit about record sales? Possibly not but I'm sure Rough Trade do. The first album leaked over a month before it came out and every muso on 'Oink' spread it across the web.

There are hints that the record isn't quite finished (leaving aside the mixing, the tracklisting is still uncertain), so maybe he'll put all the songs up on Spotify or wherever (his 'updates' on Jarvspace would suggest he's forgotten that even has a website!).

We shall see, but regardless, it's marvellous news. He's obviously very excited about releasing this record and from what we've heard live, he has every right to be.

Slightly worried that there's still no mention of 'Told You Twice' but he said they recorded 15 songs so it must be one of the handful that he doesn't mention in that piece.

Graham Coxon's next album is out the week before (11th May). What a great two weeks they look set to be.

I think The Rakes release an album the month before aswell (not sure if anyone else is fans of either of them!?)

I'm really looking forward to Jarvis new album, I like the thought that it will be pulled in the direction of Fat Children!

Is "Angela" a common name in England? It strikes me as a very American name.

As a result, I've interpreted "Angela" as a pastiche of American-style rock n' roll. Am I totally off-base?

I wouldn't say the name Angela is uncommon enough to make this song particularly directed elsewhere.  It seems more like a continuation of his penchant for fairly unglamorous names... Nicky, Deborah, Julie, etc.

I wouldn't take a ''sampler'' as great indication of the album track-listing or the order of songs (except ''In My Eyes'' being the closing song, I've always thought that will be the case).
No surprises that he lauds that song & ''Told You Twice'', they're probably the two stand-out songs of the new material he's already previewed live.

Interesting that 'Hold Still' is said to be excellent (though he doesn't go into great depth) and Pilchards is an instrumental only.

He's a very good journo, and I see what he's saying about the new record attempting to show a harder, more straight-rock side to Jarvis and how this will invariably meet with mixed results but I think there's enough quality pop moments (Girls Like It Too, Disco Song, Never Said I Was Deep) to suggest mixing it up can be fruitful...

I just wonder if we will hear anything about a single coming out. I imagine sales of his debut were really hampered by nothing to trailer the album. Don't Let Him Waste Your Time didn't appear til two months after. It would be stupid to repeat that again, if he wants his ''new sound'' to get the exposure that it appears to merit.

I was expecting 'Girls Like It Too' to be the lead single from the album but you'd normally annouce the single release date with the album release date. Having no singles from the album would save money. What with the demise of Woolies and the way the industry is at the moment perhaps it's quite a sensible paln.

but we would lose out on potential B-sides.

But if the album arrives without any song to promote it, it becomes in danger of being forgotten about quickly. A song such as Girls Like It Too has immense potential for radio play. Leaving aside long-term fans, albums are always bought by the strength of what the floating punter has heard and seen on radio/tv/online which first and foremost is the lead-single. A strong first single generally dictates whether an album lives or dies.

Now Jarvis is probably too long in the tooth to care too much either way and I imagine one of the perks of him being on Rough trade is that they give him free reign to do pretty much what he wants. But I want him to be popular. If only for the reason that the likelihood of hitherto unreleased Jarvis/Pulp material (live DVDs, reissues etc) is far greater when there's a market waiting to be tapped into rather than just a clutch of geeks on pulp.gb.com

I suppose the other aspect is the video that has to be made for a single. Given Jarvis' film-making interests and the artistic success of most Pulp/Jarvis promos, you imagine he'd come up with some sort of quirky three minute story within the budget given to him.

i suspect there will be a single a couple of months down the line for that purpose the same as last time around. Although I think it's daft to put the album out and then the single I guess it's the way it's going to be. The only real reason to put a single out is an excuse get on the telly and magazines in order to promote the album.

I'm quite happy with Jarvis being at a comfortable 'cult' status. If he was to become really popular again I think it might be a bit crap. Intellegent music lovers never have a bad thing to say about him but the rest of the general public couldn't really give a toss and I kinda like it that way!

I do a spot of DJing once in a while and about a year ago I was gutted because i put 'Fat Children' on and it cleared the dancefloor!

Pulp songs always go down a storm tho... as soon as i get hold of 'Girls Like It Too' I am going to give that a whirl!

Business-wise, I think it makes sense to release the single -after- the album. Any album Jarvis puts out is going to have strong early sales, especially by "indie-label" standards. By releasing the single a few months after the album, the label then re-invigorates sales after the initial wave of excitement (and curiosity) has run its course.

In other news...

A little bird told me that Jarvis was back in Chicago last week to review the final mixes, and possibly do some replacement vocals.

And on that note, if anyone else wants to record with Steve Albini, his studio goes for a mere $500 a day, and his personal day rate is a preposterously low $650. You're average IT consultant charges more than Steve Albini.

By the way, this quote summarizes why I think Albini and Jarvis are a good pairing:

Albini: "I am convinced that any decent art (including records) is made with a measure of disregard for its audience. Good art is an almost entirely selfish pursuit, in that the artist is doing something unique to him, and any outside perspective (this "objective" one) would be ignorant and unable to judge it completely. Having seen many bands go through the process, I am convinced that making concessions to the imaginary audience (or any "objective" considerations) almost always weakens the record.

Good records are made by freakishly-obsessed people, driven to do what only they can do, and their thinking and processes are often "objectively" wrong. Objective measures are at best a benchmark of mediocrity and shouldn't be in consideration."

Hallo everybody! (It's my first contribution to the forum)

I think there is a single on the way, because there are photos from a video shoot on flickr:

http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=Jarvis%20Cocker%20video%20shoot&w=all&s=int

Looks quite interesting - perhaps a little bit like the second "Babies" video.

Would really like to have this JARVIS COCKER name sculpture as a bedside table:

Merkin

PS: Jarvis needs a proper website. Now!

Nah, thats when the second single should come out.
Good to know that one is coming judging from the flickr fotos anyway.

Oh no!
Track listings are up around the web:

1. Further Complications
2. Angela
3. Pilchard
4. Leftovers
5. I Never Said I Was Deep
6. Homewrecker
7. Hold Still
8. Fuckingsong
9. Caucasian Blues
10. Slush
11. Youre In My Eyes (Discosong)

Girls like it too is missing from the final 11!!
IF we get a single great, but if not where are we supposed to get this potentially great song in high quality??

Links?

Was just going to post that it's a bit strange we still haven't heard anything about a track-listing when it's a month away from release and no doubt the music monthlies have already got their reviews ready for when their next issues come out in the next 10 days or so.

If this is true it looks like 'Girls Like It Too' has befallen the same fate of 'Cuckoo' and no doubt one or two other gems before it - namely that it was written too early on in the album's genesis (meaning Jarvis has gone off it). Either that or Jarvis thinks it too poppy for his meatier new sound.
Pilchards is an instrumental innit? How can that be ahead of 'Girls...'? Reduced to lousy b-side status at best...as, judging by this, are: 'Apparently', 'I Found Myself Looking For God' and 'The Night They Left Me Out Of The Home'.

If there is to be a single, it'll probably be a two weeks after the album release at the earliest. If it was to be a fortnight before, as is standard, we'd surely have heard details by now.

Well, the last time a fine song didn't fit the album dramaturgy it ended up as a bonus track wink. As long as Jarvis will release everything he recorded life's good as far as I'm concerned. I even bought the Fat Children 7'' and "Loss Adjuster" is 8:06 of pure genius - although it wouldn't have fit the album either.

So, let's wait and see.

Indeed, all of the b-sides of the last album were better than some album tracks, but they didn't fit the atmosphere of the album.

Yeah, it's a fair point that it possibly doesn't scan well alongside the other tracks.
And 'Big Stuff' and 'The Loss Adjuster' were indeed great. Not sure I could say the same for 'One Man Show'.

Anyroad, I don't doubt that it will be released in some shape or form - he said in that press release last month that all 15 tracks recorded will be made available; I just think i'Girls Like It Too's potential as a single is huge.

Angela is available to download for free on his new website. Just sign-up to the mailing list. You can also stream it.

Still not convinced by the song, in fact I think I preferred it live. He's added more lyrics which seem to clutter-up what is a fairly simple song - one big riff and lots of ''Angela'' harmonies cooing.
I thought it was a throw-away number but maybe it will grow on me.

Gotta love the website video of him trying to balance the furniture sculpted letters of his name. Especially when they all fall down! Maybe that was the ''video shoot'' that some dude posted photos onto flickr from.

O M G !

The website of the decade! How cool is that?! biggrin

Angela sounds great, although I don't like it that much as a song. Perhaps it's a single - perhaps not. Remember: Kasabian just made "Vlad the Impaler" available as a download without the song beeing the first proper single in a physical way.

Anyway, the white room and the big letters are the same from the flickr photos, so:
a) that wasn't a video shoot; they were shooting material for the website, or
b) website, album artwork and video share the same design. I bet on (b).

Is it possible that Girls Like It Too has been renamed as another song, Slush maybe? Or have all of those 11 songs been heard before?

I'll be honest, GLIT wasn't my favourite anyway, and I was a big fan of Angela which others seems to despise! It's funny how we all seem to have completely different tastes!

I can't believe GLIT isn't on there. He maybe saving it (for a soundtrack or something) I expected it to be the lead single as it is by far the most accessable new song. I'm trying not to listen to the new stuff too much as I'd like to listen to it properly when the album comes out.

I will head over to the website tho and find out if Angela has improved any with recording!

According to this, "Angela" will be the first single released as a limited edition 7" on 15th June. B-side 'I Found Myself Looking For God'.

I can't see the point in giving a single away for free and selling them two month later for 5 Euros ... confuse

But I know someone who will buy it anyway.wink

Wilfully uncommercial eejit...just as well he's not on a major label, he'd make them tear their hair out.

I've just given Angela a couple more spins and I'm beginning to like it.
And most impressively, I believe it's the first Jarvis/Pulp song since 'Stacks' to clock-in under 3 minutes! Get in!

Eamonn, I think NME forgot to add the Slush video into their report, I found it though:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9RO7_fBBAA

It sounds very much like a song which would fit perfectly into WLL at first listen (that's a good thing by the way ;))

Also, on a different note, there is another news story on NME now...Rough Trade are giving away a free cassette in their stores at the weekend with songs from a number of its artists. Track number one is...Angela. Interesting, I'm beginning to think this free single will be followed by another pay for release just before the album!

Jefferey Lewis is on there too, I really enjoyed his support at the Manchester Academy gig...

After releasing Angela Jarvis should never ever complain again about the record company making Pulp release The Trees as the lead single.no

Listened to Slush a few times on You Tube now and have to say I'm really liking it. Angela isn't a bad song but it does seem a strange choice to publicise the album with. Still, giving something away free may actually attract more interest than releasing a single. I'm sure there's a plan there somewhere, it is just very well hidden.

"Angela" reminds me of another song, something from the 60's or maybe 70's, and probably American... but I can't quite put my finger on it.

Anyone else think the tune sounds familiar?

There's a bit in Angela (1.38 - 1.55) which sounds very much like one of The Young Knives songs (unsure which without listening) which is strange as they have said themselves that they are influenced to some degree by Pulp.

say what you will about 'Angela' (my complaint would be that the vocals at the end seem a bit thin when compared to the rawer live takes from the summer of 2008), but, it's actually pretty good old rock and roll production.  and this has been a sound that Jarvis has never been able to get quite right.  i think that 70s fuzz of the main riff is great, i think the percussion (the instrument that usually derails any revivalists' attempt at a Nuggets-era sound) sounds fresh and analogue.  and the handclaps;baby, i'll never get sick of handclaps.

i think that the vocals are pulled back which is nice (the levels, not the performace... which is weak.)  i think that producers are always too eager to put Jarvis' vocal way up front, like Eddie Vedder, instead of mixing them deeper into the song (like Exile On Main Street.)

i would say that this would be a great indicator that Girls Like It Too is going to be a super fun summer single.  With that chorus and that tambourine done right (and not like a warmed up producer's take on an His 'n' Hers leftover) it could be my favourite Jarvis release since TIH - the single.

oh wait, it's not on the album.

I don't get how anyone can like the song!
It doesn't work live 'cos the disjointed rhythm is impossible to dance to, & by Jarvis' standards it's an extremely poor lyric.
That's Further Complications completely killed off then.
I was with a few friends when it first came on the Culture Show, & they instantly dismissed it as a pile of crap.

Oh, & the backing vocals REALLY suck.
What the hell the label are doing even letting this out, let alone promoting it, I don't know. Maybe it's a credit crunch thing & they're trying to kill Jarvis' career so they don't have to finance any more studio time?

For me, this is far & away the worst song he's ever done.
At least with Silence the lyric made sense!

And axing GLIT, it's as tho' he's TRYING to piss us off.
GLIT is the new Cuckoo, then? Oh great, then someone can get hold of it & sit on it.
I think I'm gonna be ill.

Jarvis said he is going to release every song recently recorded, didn't he? I think that's the most important information for us - the fans - and for Jarvis it's a huge step forward in letting go his legendary perfectionism to "get a song right". Let's hope the days of rejected recording sessions are over once and for all. wink

Jesus christ, it's just a fucking song, it's a rock song, it's meant to be throwaway. I don't know why everyone on here is so up-in-arms about it. It's just fun. It's like when people slag off Vicar in a Tutu by The Smiths just because it's not How Soon Is Now. It's a song, it's fun, it'll fit in on the album.

Slightly worrying though that nobody really seems to like it...and he certainly won't be winning any new fans with it either. Like James said, anyone I have shown the Culture Show clip to has not liked it one bit.

If it was an obviously "fun" little rock song then I don't think anyone would really be up in arms about it...but I don't think it does sound fun. It's just really boring, and pretty badly done by anybody's standards. I think people are also worried that it will harm new or casual listeners opinion of him.

Credit where it's due though, I did wake up briefly for the little guitar solo in the middle, but quickly fell asleep again after.

Still looking forward to the album though. Have liked pretty much everything else I have heard live.

& there is now way a rock song should be throwaway.
Good rock songs are listened to repeatedly 10, 20, 30, 40 years later.

Various places are now showing the following tracklist:

1. Angela
2. Pilchard
3. Leftovers
4. Homewrecker!
5. Hold Still
6. Fuckingsong
7. Caucasian Blues
8. Slush
9. You're In My Eyes (Discosong)

Sources: Amazon, Play.com

So it looks like the title track and 'I Never Said I Was Deep' are not going to be included after all.

Of the new tracks I have heard so far 'I Never Said I Was Deep' and 'Girls Like It Too' are probably my favourites, so I'm a bit disappointed that neither are going to be included.

Jesus, this album seems to have further complications the closer we get to the release.
So it looks like the US edition has 11 tracks but not the UK...as Will said, leaving 'Girls Like It Too' off is disappointing, but dropping 'Never Said I Was Deep' is just careless.
What the feck is he playing at?

The only thing I can come up with is that he wants to keep the flow of tracks filled with grooves and guitar riffs...which means stuff that don't seem to have much substance (Angela and FuckingSong). But then Slush, DiscoSong and Leftovers suggest he's putting a more sensitive side on there too...I dunno.

I suppose we'll know for sure once the music monthlies come out soon although you'd think Rough Trade or Jarvis would have confirmed the track-listing by now rather than us relying on online CD distributors.

A couple of early (brief) reviews of the album and sampler respectively.

NYMetro

Jarvis Cocker, Further Complications

Official release date: May 19th, 2009

The verdict: Though Jarvis Cocker's debut solo album sounded more or less exactly like his work as the front man of Pulp, his second record finds the lanky, newly bearded Brit rocking out more than at any other point in his 30-year career. Appropriately enough, the album is produced by Steve Albini, a man best known for his work capturing the raw intensity of Nirvana, PJ Harvey, and the Pixies. Though the shift to more aggressive material is hard to ignore, Jarv is still Jarv half the record deals with some rather severe sexual frustration, and one of the album's highlights is a cheeky, incredibly self-deprecating ballad titled "I Never Said I Was Deep." Similarly, fans of the grim yet relentlessly horny grooves of Pulp's This Is Hardcore album are advised to skip directly to "You're In My Eyes (Discosong)," an epic disco ballad that is equal parts romance and sleaze.

Filter Mag

First Impressions: Jarvis Cocker, Further Complications
by Staff | 04.20.2009

Jarvis Cocker
Further Complications
Rough Trade
Release Date: May 19th

Partial Tracklisting:

Angela
Pilchard
Leftovers
Hold Still
Fuckingsong
Further Complications
Youre In My Eyes (Discosong)

First Impressions:

- From the start of this sampler of songs from Jarvis Cockers upcoming album, its obvious hes feeling ready to rock, with tunes piled high with catchy electric guitar riffs.

- With the exception of the words 'Oh you pilchard' 'Pilchard' is mostly instrumental and one of the highlights of the sampler, with a driving beat and electric guitars with enough trippy twang to come off like a punked-up surf rock tune.

- Cocker slows things down for a funky profession of his desire in Leftovers. Though it sometimes is a little funny to hear a 45-year-old man confess he wants to be someones teddy bear and is in the mood to get cuddly, theres still a sexiness to Cockers jagged enunciation when he says, I told you twice: I want to be your lover.

- Where Leftovers was the tender part of desire, Fuckingsong is the flip side and exactly what its title suggests. I will never get to touch you / So wrote this song instead, Cocker snarls out, followed by suggestive lyrics and a pulsating rhythm that is actually kind of hot.

Key Tracks:

Pilchard, Fuckingsong, Youre In My Eyes (Discosong)

Predictions:

Jarvis Cocker is great about enunciating every possible word, which sometimes is distracting when you can perfectly hear lyrics as silly as that teddy bear line in Leftovers. But those hiccups are minor, and overall, these tracks from his upcoming Further Complications are funky jams that show off the Britpop legends edgy, rock and roll side all while dripping with a kind of dorky-but-seductive factor (especially on the disco-inspired Youre In My Eyes).

here's another one (i can't remember where i got this now):

Preview of Jarvis Cocker's Further Complications

Further_complicationWhen we last left Mr. Cocker, he was kicking our ass last July at his Music Hall of B-Burg show. In that time frame, he was working on his second album with producer Steve Albini (Pixie's Surfer Rosa) at the helm.

The result is Further Complications, which will be release on Rough Trade/Beggar's Banquet on May 19. I got the advance, and you should expect some very different rock sounds from the former Pulp frontman.

Here's a track by track breakdown.

1. Further Complications: On the whole, the album is a more ballsy rock album. His Jarvis album was smooth, sexy and had lot of instrumentation.  In the title track, it sets up that his voice has more force and the music more stripped down to basic drums, guitar and bass.

2. Angela: He played this song  at the Music Hall show. It's a rough quickie with a glammy, T-Rex  guitar part. This is a good representation of what I think the album sounds like.

3. Pilchard: More driving, wacky guitars with a pounding pace. Jarvis doesn't necessarily sing on this one, just moans and breathes quickly to match the quick tempo.

4. Leftovers: Time to slow things down with the six-minute song, that's more akin to the first album and some of his Pulp work. His vocals are more along his normal style --  smooth and seductive. "I still want to love you while we still have the flesh on our bones" is one of the choice lines on this great song. I love six-minute songs.

Jarvis 5. I Never Said I Was Deep: I wonder if the title of this song is a statement about Jarvis himself. He has a female soul choir backing him up on this one. This is his take on the Rolling Stones style from the late 60/early 70s. This soul song builds up to a big finish. It's interesting that he's tackling this style of song.

6. Homewrecker!: Back to rock, you even find a deep baritone sax on this classic 50s rock track.  It's a dirty sounding tune with the various horns blowing over each other.

7. Hold Still: Another simple seductive track with Jarvis putting the moves on his lady.

8. Fuckingsong: He also road tested this song last year. The guitars are back in full force. Even a year later, I still remember him strutting around on stage and going through his various poses. You even get a little "WOO!" thrown in the song. The guy is a British sex machine.

9. Caucasian Blues: Maybe a playful take on Cocksucking Blues?  If anything, this album is definitely more guitar heavy than his last. While he was a master of 90s British Pop, this one kicks out the jams, and on this one, he screams his way through it.

10. Slush: This one is slow plodding song, also clocking in at 6+ minutes. Even the title makes you feel like it's grinding to a halt. The first half takes it time, then eventually you hear the gospel choir and it becomes bombastic.

11. You're In My Eyes (Discosong): This ain't no a party, but this IS a disco, It's Jarvis getting freaky with the 8-minute closer. It's not a party anthem at any stretch of the imagination, but you do get the sense that this is his Bee Gees song. You hear that wackacha-wackacha guitars and the disco drums through the whole thing.

In all, it's not a consistent album, but you get the feeling he's trying on different hats. Angela is the one people will take to because it's a catchy track. There's not a track that sounds like the brilliant "Don't Let Him Waste Your Time", but then again, there shouldn't be. I do know that the Further Complications should be great to hear live.

Amazon is now listing this as the tracklisting for the vinyl release (they'll revise the cd listing soon, i imagine):

1. Further Complications
2. Angela
3. Pilchard
4. Leftovers
5. I Never Said I Was Deep
6. Homewrecker
7. Hold Still
8. Fuckingsong
9. Caucasian Blues
10. Slush
11. You're In My Eyes (Discosong)

looks like no Girls Like It Too.  a stellar b-side for the single, one hopes.

I have a bad feeling that the 11 track version is for the US edition (Two ''bonus tracks'') while in Europe (or UK/Ireland at least) we'll get the truncated album. The fact the vinyl version has the full 11 songs, given his love of the medium, makes me more pessimistic.

I hope I'm wrong cos 'Further Complications' is pretty good (from 'live' listens - I also really enjoyed the acoustic performance from last week) and probably the strongest of the heavier new songs while 'I Never Said I Was Deep' is just fantastic.

At least the two real songs of genius that we know of, 'In My Eyes' and 'Leftovers' look to have survived any potential culling.

You can listen to Slush, I Never Said I Was Deep and Discosong via hypemachine:

The production of the songs sounds absolutely terrific. Albini seems to be the perfect match for Jarvis.

OMG, there's even a choir on Discosong! biggrinbiggrinbiggrin

Even more breaking news, the album has leaked! Mate of mine got it on his computer and it contains 11 tracks.

yeah, but that confirms no Girls Like It Too....oh well

I Never said i was deep is marvelous. If that song fits, Girls like it too would have fit too.

its really an early 70s sounding album, in the vein of T Rex and Bowie. Doesnt seem that strong on first listen really, hope it grows after a few listens.
