Jarvis Cocker will release his as-yet untitled second solo album on May 18, NME.COM can reveal.
The follow-up to 2006's 'Jarvis' was produced in the most by Steve Albini (Pixies, Nirvana, The Breeders) in Albini's Chicago studio in January.
The tracklisting of the former Pulp frontman's new LP is yet to be finalised.
However, songs likely to make the final cut include 'Angela', 'Pilchard', 'I Told You Twice (Leftovers)', 'Hold Still', 'Fuckingsong', 'Further Complications' and 'You're In My Eyes (Discosong)'.
Keep checking NME.COM for more details on the album.
May 18th! Hoorah! Soemone predicted 1st week of May so not too far off the mark.
A non-Christmas release could also actually mean that Jarvis gets deservedly higher up the charts, although I doubt he will be overly concerned with that.
That is good news. Not so far away it is, a little more than 2 months. Well, I'm looking forward to it. Hopefully it'll be a bit more rocking than the last album.

Steve Albini is a weird/wise choice, when you come to think of it. Weird because he mostly produces american bands, but wise coz Jarv's new songs, the heavy ones, tend to sound like what he's produced before. It could be a hit or miss really.
Albini is an intriguing choice. He's produced the best albums by The Manics and The Auteurs. His reputation ties-in with the ''heavier sound'' that Jarvis has stated he was going for with this record. I wonder if he returned to Sheffield (Yellowarch Studios most likely) to finish the rest of the recording.
Or to Paris perhaps. Isn't that were much of the vocals of the first solo record were recorded? I suppose a single is coming out quickly, or perhaps a MySpace preview just like Cunts..

I hope this is true. I think Albini is the perfect guy to make the album rock, but in a raw, edgy way. He's worked with David Gedge -- both Wedding Present and Cinerama.
I can't tell, though, where they got these quotes and info from. Did they interview him directly? I can't find anything on Rough Trade's website or Jarvis' MySpace.
NME scooped Pitchfork on the date, but Pitchfork has the full story, including album art.
That shouldn't surprise anyone since Pitchfork has close ties to Steve Albini (who works cheap, apparently). Bort wrote: How about some damn shows in the US in a city other than NYC for a change?
*pedantic cough* I will point out that he also played Coachella (outside LA), San Francisco, Seattle, and Chicago, as well as a night in Vancouver, BC.
Just seen this. Great name for the album (even if it's lifted from a song of the same name). As for the sleeve...is that really it? Would have expected a bit more fanfare if so. And a bit strange that it should be revealed before the tracklist. Also, the font and arrow thing pointing to Jarvis is a replica of the first record. Maybe he just likes it a lot...
As for the concise, interesting comments from Jarvis about the songs themselves - they're of a similar style to how he spoke of the 'new' tracks on the reissues. They (the song descriptions) sound smart, but only in a 'I had a chance to think of a short, clever way to describe some of the new songs' as opposed to Jarvis having spoken the words in an interview. Perhaps they come from the sampler that Fuss Free says is apparently doing the rounds...(where did you hear that Fuss Free?).
And thank God, ''Told You Twice'' hasn't fallen through the cracks - I was so disappointed not to hear it live in Manchester and I'm not sure he played it at all during the 'Rough at 30' tour. There's still just the one recording of it on youtube from a US show last summer.
I'm tempted to let keep my sources a mystery, but, what the hell... John Mulvey of Uncut Magazine claims to have said sampler. He does not, however, offer an opinion. Which means he could be lying.
John Mulvey, eh? He's interviewed Jarvis and Pulp quite a bit in the past going back many years. I only know this cos we share what is not a very common surname. Good journo though.
The full press release below. Note that Jarvis says the songs will be made available on March 26th (on jarvspace?):
NOTES ON THE ALBUM SO FAR
In January of this year we went to the United States to record at Steve Albinis studio, Electrical Audio, in Chicago. Between the 3rd & the 24th of January we recorded 15. Im sorry that you cant hear them yet but due to the idiosyncratic way in which Electrical Audio functions, the whole record will not be fully mixed until the 25th of March. Ho-Hum. (I hope this is not coming across like a school-kids excuse for not handing his homework in on time)
Please allow me to anticipate some of the questions you might have:
1 WHY CHICAGO? WHY STEVE ALBINI?
Last year we were invited to play at the Pitchfork festival in Chicago during July. Steve Mackey (he plays the bass, you know) suggested that we try recording some songs with Steve Albini whilst we were in town. This made sense on many levels to go all that way just to play one show seemed a bit wasteful (eco-awareness) Plus, I had already decided that I wanted this record to be more of a group effort than the last one. So we had worked songs out in rehearsal rather than me delivering them fully-written & now I wanted to record them in an environment where we could all play at the same time & hopefully capture something of the spirit of a band all working together, all aiming in the same direction (though at what I really couldnt say). Electrical Audio (Albinis studio) is specifically designed to record bands in that way.
Plus, it was very cheap.
(The two songs we tried out in July worked out , so we booked time in January to finish the album. The pound collapsed against the dollar in the interim).
2 WHO DOES WHAT ON THE SONGS RECORDED SO FAR?
Jarvis sings & plays various bits & pieces. Steve Mackey plays the bass Ross Orton plays the drums Simon Stafford plays keyboards & sings backing vocals Tim McCall plays the guitar in the right-hand speaker Martin Craft plays the guitar in the left-hand speaker + occasional keyboards & backing vocals
This applies to all the songs so far except Pilchard where Jarvis plays the guitar in the left-hand speaker & Simon & Martin had a lie-down.
Jarvis also played the synthesiser on Fuckingsong & Youre in my Eyes(Discosong).
Extra musicians: Daniel Knox sings backing vocals on Angela & Hold Still Mary Lattimore plays harp on Hold Still & Youre in my Eyes (Discosong) Yvonne Gage, Leveeta Renee Robinson & Shawn Roberts are the heavenly choir on Youre in my Eyes (Discosong).
3 HAS JARVIS GONE ROCK?
No but during the course of touring his last record he discovered that , with this band, he COULD rock & so hed be a fool not to. (When the situation demanded it).
4 WHAT ABOUT THE REST OF THE SONGS ON THE ALBUM?
Hmmm thats a toughie. Especially seeing as the track-listing hasnt been finalised yet but Ill tell you a bit about all the other songs we recorded.( Theyll all see the light of day in some shape or form, anyway.) SLUSH is a song I wrote whilst aboard a ship that was sailing up the west coast of Greenland last year. I guess that slush will be the ultimate outcome of global warming. CAUCASIAN BLUES is an attempt to understand the pain of a man whose Honda Goldwing has run out of petrol. I NEVER SAID I WAS DEEP is the phrase that I would like carved on my tombstone. GIRLS LIKE IT TOO takes its title from a phrase in one of the speeches made at John Peels funeral. THE NIGHT THEY LET ME OUT OF THE HOME portrays the difficulties of using public transport whilst on crutches. APPARENTLY is about how you can be in love with someone without realising it. I FOUND MYSELF LOOKING FOR GOD lists unlikely places one can look for spiritual enlightenment & HOMEWRECKER! is an absolute racket featuring saxophone from Steve Mackay (he played on The Stooges Funhouse, you know) .
The record wont feature all of these songs (that would make it too long) but we will have a finalised running order available from March 26th onwards if you are interested. (+ you can hear all the songs then, too).
& FINALLY WHATS WITH THE BEARD?
I grew it to keep my face warm in the Arctic & then I kind of got attached to it. (The amount of grey in it horrified me at first but now I think it acts as a handy reminder of my own mortality.)
Great stuff FussFree. Not sure where you digged that out from but very interesting indeed...
So this time two weeks we'll have a very good idea if the man has written the record of his career. Strange that he should rush to get it out there almost two months ahead of the physical release? Doesn't he give a shit about record sales? Possibly not but I'm sure Rough Trade do. The first album leaked over a month before it came out and every muso on 'Oink' spread it across the web.
There are hints that the record isn't quite finished (leaving aside the mixing, the tracklisting is still uncertain), so maybe he'll put all the songs up on Spotify or wherever (his 'updates' on Jarvspace would suggest he's forgotten that even has a website!).
We shall see, but regardless, it's marvellous news. He's obviously very excited about releasing this record and from what we've heard live, he has every right to be.
Slightly worried that there's still no mention of 'Told You Twice' but he said they recorded 15 songs so it must be one of the handful that he doesn't mention in that piece.
