Spotify now available to everyone in the UK

Were taking our first baby step to open up Spotify to a larger audience today. Up until now weve kept a close eye on controlling our user growth with invitations so that we dont run into any problems and to ensure that everyone gets a really good music experience when they signup, so far so good.

So starting today people in the UK will no longer need an invitation to join Spotify, you can register for our free service directly from our website as always our premium, ad-free service is still available. However, we want to make sure that everyone who uses Spotify gets the same fast, uninterrupted experience so providing a stable service is our priority. If growth happens too fast and it starts affecting quality we may have to re-instate the invitation system, hopefully this wont happen.

If everything goes well we hope to do the same in other countries in the future, but for now if youre in the UK and have been looking for an invitation to join, the wait is over. Visit our homepage and join Spotify.

Was idly searching for something on forum and this came up. Incredible it has only been 15 years or so since Spotify arrived. And then others followed. To think of all the hours I wasted ripping my CDs

Netflix arrived in 2012. Hard to believe how pre-historic the world was in the 20th century

I will forever prefer CD/downloads and ripping my own CDs than Spotify/Amazon Music...

Cannot rely on Spotify not to replace a song from the service with another inferior version, or just remove a song entirely, breaking the flow of your playlist, and the tiny amount they pay musicians is scandalous. On top of that, your money goes to paying for Joe Rogan, whose last minute endorsement of Trump may have made a difference in the election in terms of getting out the vote.

I use YouTube music myself. I think it's better because it has the same catalogue as Spotify with all user-uploaded content on top of it. So I could, for example, make a playlist of officially released Pulp songs and also include some live songs in there that are on YouTube.

It's not only the time it took to rip CDs, remember all the time it took to do tape copies of live shows and rarities?
