It's not bad, it's just the high-pitch and slightly different rhythm on the main riff, played on the keys, that I fund off-putting. Chaplin does a good job with the vocals.
Their piano-man is obviously very adept. Wonder if they've tried any other keyboard-heavy Pulp songs.
I went to see Keane in Sheffield last Friday (and it was fantastic) and they did Disco 2000. I almost died. It sounded fantastic and it really, really got the crowd going:)
Its for the best mark lol - the crowd were also dead during that clip too ............................ if I saw Keane doing that, id ask for a refund !
Yep, I'm sure that the members of Keane can all really relate to those lyrics...
I don't think there is any greater wrong than a bunch of middle of the road, humourless, posh, privileged private school twats singing about "woodchip on the wall".
Not that I'm one of these people who think that Pulp were some huge "working class" band, but seriously, they should have changed the lyrics to "Daddy used to give both of us a lift home sometimes in his Bentley fitted with in-car dvd player and drinks cooler but it meant nothing to you, cause you were so popular..."
"Woodchip on the wall" is one of those very British references Jarvis occasionally makes that I never quite understood. Would someone care to enlighten me?
A quick search of google reveals that it's some kind of textured wallpaper of German origin, sort of a "faux stucco"??? Is that correct? And was it standard issue in working class Northern England homes?
my parents still have it on literally EVERY wall and we're not northern
it's basically just cheap wallpaper that has little chips of wood stuck on it and then painted. I think my parents have it as they say the plaster is wonky and this covers that fact up
Whilest we're talking about cover versions... Here's 'Babies' by Goodnight Electric. This one's a laugh as well but a little more endearing than Keane!

this is a RARE cover of this is Hardcore from "Vaqueros Paganos" a still amateur/underground band with obvious potential... Smoth version, bad sound quality
on topic: Keane version sucks baaaaaaaad

Not sure the duet format particularly adds anything, to be honest I assumed it was just a way of covering the full vocal range. But you've got to admit it's dead impressive that they managed to credibly cover such a horrendously complex track, built up in the studio over months and months, live with a two guitar/bass/drums line-up. Amazing really.

I'm not sure I'm as entirely blown away by this as everyone else. It's a pretty serviceable, faithful cover, but the vocals aren't great and it IS just a more boring arrangement of the song.
You do like the original though, despite Russell's non-involvement?
Haha, yes I do! To be honest I was a little unnerved by comeback single Help The Aged's "same-old" feel: a fine song, but it somehow felt a little like a leftover from Different Class.
This Is Hardcore blew me away though. It's just phenomenal.
My story is just that I don't like rock music anymore.
Hi, so glad you found Vaqueros Paganos, they're one of my favorite bands in the indie scene of Buenos Aires. That cover is fantastic, I was there that night and it was awesome. Here's the link to their LP, it's free download
careful people I ADORE keane! :P The studio version of disco2000 is quite a bit better. It is on the Island50 CD. Even as a die hard Keane fan, I would never say they can even come close to PULP's version. I think Island made them do it for the 50th anniversary cd. I doub't it was their idea. They just road tested it at live gigs and the fans loved it...for the song itself I think.
There is a london band on myspace called 'Concrete G-ds'. They have an absolutely hilarious cockney cover of 'common people' ...worth a listen. http://www.myspace.com/concretegods

Her name is Davinah......Davinah!!!
Still could be worse.....could've been Phil Collins. That really would have me reaching for the sick bucket.
hm...yes, well like I said...Island made them do it.
Dunno about that. They've played it live a lot and even said it was a favourite of theirs. It's not a bad stab but like has been said the riff just doesn't work on keyboards. Too much HIGH NRG campness. Like something the black bloke from the Radion Micro ads with the colourful clothes would use for his spin-off aerobics videos.
One of my favourite Pulp songs but little to no chance of hearing it performed live ever again. I suppose after the year 2000 there was not much point but still......i live in hope. And if Pulp ever do reform they really should perform this song as it was a big single at the time. What your really paying money for is to hear their hits now and this was one of their hits.
I find the number of hispanic Pulp fans facinating. Absolutely facinating. There is a guy on youtube called ProudRobot (check him out guys) who has got some live stuff, TV footage and promo vids and put spanish captions on them.
