Probably won't be £38.  HMV tend to stick up a high price on future releases until they get the stock.  In all likelihood it will be around £20 as shown here (albeit out of stock) http://www.cargorecords.co.uk/release/6988

Didn't you know, Pulp records don't get sold in the US. Rather, Americans pay x2 the British cost for an "Import", or we buy from Amazon Uk at the regular British price and pay for int'l shipping.

Island hasn't supported Pulp in the US since the Party Hard single. (Rough Trade/Sanctuary put out WLL).

 

Well, I stand corrected. That is a curious release.

Honestly, they muck around with bizarre stuff like this and we still don't get a deluxe edition of WLL. Bah!

It's the best album, that's probably why it gets re-released.

As much as I would like a resurgence in vinyl, as I buy little else these days, and the fact that there is a increase in vinyl sales, it still represents less than 1% of the total market.

Approximate figures US 2008 (yearly change).....

Vinyl - 2 million albums (up 50%)
CD    - 360 million albums (down 20%)
Download - 66 million units (up 32%)  [that's just legal downloads]

The biggest seller in 2008 was Radiohead shifting around 16,000 units on a new LP, so an old Pulp LP would do less than a thousand.

The UK differs a bit as the single market is still alive and downloads are around 80% of the market (CD ~= 16% and vinyl ~= 4%).

There is a growth in purchasing vinyl but not in the volumes that make it economically viable.  This means the vinyl is likely to be expensive. I wouldn't expect any other album apart from Different Class to get a vinyl re-release (ideally with the changeable covers ).

In relation to a potential WLL deluxe edition, it will be interesting to see if the success (or not) of Jarvis' new album will help bring about the reissue of Pulp's last album. Pretty much every recording since the early/mid 1990s is an all-digital recording where the original sounds are recorded and mixed digitally. Older CDs have AAD to show they were recorded and mixed as analog, but these are rare these days as most re-releases are digitally re-mastered.

A WLL deluxe version would be great but not very likely. Pulp were well treated with three deluxe editions, most bands do well to get one. Of all the bands I like, only the Happy Mondays got two, though pretty much everything on them was already available unlike the excellent Pulp deluxe editions. Julian Cope's Jehovahkill runs them a close second, but only for the unreleased material not the packaging which was far superior for Pulp.

The download route is an interesting one.  CD quality downloads of previously unavailable material could be provided via Universal or HDtracks. Unless there is a contractural reason preventing it, Pulp/Jarvis could  release these tracks for free download on myspace.  Sod the going rate!  How they justify charging so much for low quality downloads is amazing.  CDs often cost less these days, and you get a case, cover and no DRM, though that is dying out.

Most of my huge record collection is in storage, but I do have a turntable and a select set of records to play on it (I just need a bigger place to live).

I have been looking for all the Pulp albums on vinyl for a reasonable price for a while, but even Intro is expensive, whereas Hardcore & Different Class (with the exchangeable covers) are just up for silly prices.

I was discussing finding these with someone who deals in vinyl who is looking out for me.  He said that although the Pulp vinyl is rare, the original pressings were all poor (pretty common for Island), and that they are probably best bought to look at rather than play. 

I have picked up some newer vinyl in recent weeks, and the pressings are far superior to a lot of the older vinyl I have, particularly stuff from the late seventies/early eighties.   Some of those discs could almost count as flexi discs, and the groove cramming made some albums unlistenable.

WLL is definitely not a great sounding record.

This may be the biggest problem with that album.  As much as I love Scott Walker WLL has none of the warmth or character that a lot of his own recordings have.

I found Different Class after years of searching for $25 but it wasn't mint. Had all the inserts but there was a piece of tape stupidly on the cover. But it plays fine and the price is better than the $150-300 I've seen them go for on ebay.

I am lucky to have scored We Love Life on ebay for only $40 in mint condition.
