This is probably a question for the more hardcore amoung you:
Pulp dtarted playing Help The Aged live in 1996, right? As in before Russell went? So a) did he ever play on this song & b) how come he isn't credited on the sleeve?
Also, wasn't Cocaine Socialism written before he left, and therefore how come he didn't get credited for that, and do any recordings, live, demo or otherwise, exist of Russell playing Help The Aged?
Hope that makes sense, I'm in a bit of a rush to go to a new years party!
Oh yeah, & HAPPY NEW YEAR TO EVERYONE ON BAR ITALIA!!

Hello James,

Russell did play Help The Aged live a handful of times - notably at V96 and a couple of other concerts around that time. My understanding is that he isn't credited for either that or Cocaine Socialism because he didn't contribute significantly to the writing, and doesn't appear on the released versions.

In terms of recording, obviously he was there at the late '96 sessions where they started recording HtA and CS, and as far as I know he did record guitar parts for them, but these weren't used in the final mixes. He told me he came up with a really good guitar part for Cocaine Socialism that he hung on to when he left in case he could find another use for it. Apparently it did become the basis of a Venini song later on, but that subesquently got scrapped too! For Help the Aged, he claims his guitar part wasn't up to much, and the (dodgy camcorder) video of V96 that survives would seem to bear this out - he seems to just be playing the chords basically.

There are also audience recordings from the two V96 concerts that shouldn't be too hard to track down.

Happy new year!

Thanks for that. Presumably the basic chord structure for HTA came from Jarvis then. To paraphrase, the Jarvis "wanting to get a song about aging & death into the charts" would bear out that he'd be the main writer of that song.
Wonder if the Cocaine Socialism guitar part'll ever surface? I'm guessing it's not the part on 'propper version' if he kept hold of it when he left.
That's cleared that up for me then. Ta!

HTA came out of soundcheck noodlings during the '96 tour, so the music is probably a joint effort to some degree. The 'proper version' of CS doesn't have Russell's guitar part. Shame, as you say it'd be interesting to hear it.

This is quite amusing: tomorrow nite I intend to cover Help The Aged live......accompanied by a violinist!
(I'm jokingly dedicating it to myself as it was my birthday on Tuesday.)

I have a question: What contribution did Mark Webber have to writing these songs, seeing how Russell was still around. You see Mark is my favorite member of the band, but I've never known what exactly he contributed to the band. Did he write songs or just riffs, solos, etc.? Is he a reason that This Is Hardcore was more distorted and guitar oriented?

This interview from Mark explains a bit about his contribution - as with every member it varies from song to song, but it'd seem safe to say that from Different Class onwards (and even slightly before according to the interview!) he will have contributed guitar/keyboard parts, solos, maybe some chord sequences and stuff, as well as just playing bits that other band members have come up with. And Nick confirms that his droney E-bow guitar stuff was a factor in the new sound they developed circa This Is Hardcore.

Obviously any band member's contribution would vary massively from song to song (eg A Little Soul was apparently almost a Jarvis solo effort, with the others coming in to play some little bits when the track was almost finished), and the way that Pulp tended to write songs via interminable jam sessions where bits get grafted on and whittled away means it's not always easy to say who was responsible for what bit. However, as the fact he was contributing to the writing was a reason that Mark was asked to become an official member, it's safe to assume that he had as much to do with the music you hear on the records as Candida, Steve or Nick.

Thanks for explaining things for me. I guess I've always assumed any Distorted guitars on Hardcore and We Love Life would be Mark's, because for some reason I have a hard time imagining Jarvis plugging his guitar into a distortion pedal. But I could be wrong. Also, it seems like the amount of guitar solos from Different Class to Hardcore grew drastically.

Solo Totals including B-sides
Different Class: 6
This Is Hardcore: 14

Clearly I'm over-analyzing.
