I wracked up a few frequent flyer miles an had an amazing time at the Seattle show.  He did an encore with a brilliant cover of Jimi Hendrix's "Purple Haze"--I wish I had been able to record that!

Did anyone else see it or the Vancouver show?  I would have loved to see that too!

The show was awesome (Seattle). The Showbox was pretty full - maybe about 90-95% or so. Jarv came on with a copy of the Seattle Post-Intelligencer and threw pages out to the audience. Most of his banter between songs came from reading the paper before taking the stage. I laughed when he said "I didn't even know intelligencer is a word". I guess I've taken the name of the paper for granted over the years, but you know, he's right - what is an "intelligencer"? He played just about everything from his album, plus "Big Stuff", "One Man Show" and a set-closing "Purple Haze". It's funny, on the soundboard before the show I saw a crumpled up setlist which had "Crystal Ship" as the set-ending cover song. Did he do that song in San Francisco? Does he choose a cover song based on the city he's playing? Overall a great great show!!

You know what was also funny? He had a list of verbal cues taped down by his set-list. I peeked over the monitor and saw "Air Hockey" on the list, and was wondering if it was a new song or something. Then later, he launched into that diatribe about his bruised finger, and how air hockey should be banned since it's a menace, etc. I thought it was cool that he takes the time to think about what he's going to say between songs.

It's also funny that he's still doing that bit where he gives a drink away to the audience with the condition that "You have to promise to share it." I remember when he did that in LA in 1997, and I was the (un) fortunate girl who he handed the bottle to. I basically got attacked and covered with water and didn't even get to keep the bottle. I did my best to avoid the pilsner urquel he handed out this time!

It does sound like he's doing a cover of a song from a local band at each of his shows. I wonder if he'll do a covers album next? Oh, the possibilies...!

I was thinking maybe Rough Trade could release an EP or something of some of these live covers. It would've been cool if they'd a made a covers CD to sell at shows.

my exgirlfriend got to go backstage and hang out with jarvis after the vancouver show.  apparently he had a change of underwear in a clear baggie that he was sorry that everyone has to "put up with all night."  but he was very nice and made sure everyone had drinks personally, etc.

What on earth for?  Was he waiting for the chance to change or something?  I'm jealous of your ex's backstage privileges, although it would be odd to be served drinks by someone holding their pants in a bag.  Even if they are Jarvis' pants.
