Hey, I'm from Toronto but heading down to the Monday night show in NYC. I'm wondering what the best way to meet Jarvis is? Anyone got any good suggestions from past experience?

I debated going to this for a while. Eventually, I decided against it. I've already seen Pulp in NYC once and I went to the Auto Festival in 2002. I rather like that my last time seeing them live was also Pulp's final show. I don't want to ruin it by seeing a lackluster performance of his solo album.
Also, NYC has become insufferably narcissistic these past few years, and that city just doesn't appeal to me anymore. Go look at the kids on the MisShapes website. Those are the people who are going to be at the show. I can do without that. Losers.
If it really mattered that much to me, I'd fly out to the west coast and see Jarvis at one of the more intimate venues, with people who don't eat crack cereal.
a) OMG, I am so hawt. b) OMG, I heard Lilo is DJing at this crazy club called MisShapes! Lets get dressed all, like, "indie" and go! c) OMG! The music hear is so krazy! I should totally get into Madonna! d) OMG! THis photo is gunna look so kewl on my myspace page. I wonder if Jordan will go out with me now that I've gone down on him in public.
The answer of course, is none of the above. They aren't capable of thinking.
Question - why the hell does Jarvis show up at their parties? He's in some photos from one of the parties from back in 2005 I think....wonder if he'll go again...not that I'll be in NY by then - arriving sunday

Yeah but practically every gig he's done so far has been met with great acclaim. Still, if it makes you feel better, keep hoping that it is "lacklustre" (insert 'winking' emotion thingy here).
I went to see Jarvis at the recent gig in Sheffield and I'm really glad I did. I actually think he was on better form, and therefore the show was more enjoyable, than most of the Pulp gigs I saw.

Yeah, I'm sure he'll be in fine form. I think it's really just the whole "New York" thing. It's a big venue and there's likely to be an audience full of scenesters and industry types. The last time I saw a band I love at an event like that, it really ruined the whole experience for me. Given the expense and time it takes to travel to NYC, I decided I'd really rather stay home.
Now... that 900 capacity Vancouver show... that sounds fantastic. If only..
Hey my b/f and I just bought tickets to the Sunday show as well! So I'll now be at both - so psyched! Anyone know what time Jarvis will prob. go on? Doors are at 8 PM, so I'm thinking maybe 9 PM?

(for the curious, those event photos of Jarvis & Steve Mackey DJing can be found here - http://www.ambrel.net/2005/0205-pulp/index.html . Jarvis' wife Camille also shows up in a few)
anyhow, it's good to hear so many positive things about his solo gigs - I'm on the opposite coast and going to the Fillmore one in San Francisco. I probably should put up a separate post about that... but have fun, all of you :)
ok, well the opening band was the Dirty Projectors. i missed 100% of their set drinking in the bar. and i didn't hear anyone say a word about them.
jarvis came on around 10pm. the opener, Fat Children, sounded exactly like the album. jarvis was in a good mood, talking over the extended opening chords of the song, 'does anyone want me to tell a story? well...do you?' there was a lot of dancing, the band was into it, steve was moving a lot more than i can recall during his Pulp days. DLHWYT came in next and this is where things got impressive. the separation this band acheived with their instruments on this song, a particularly easy song to get lost in its richness live in a venue like Webster Hall, was excellent. jarvis acted out all the lyrics, good fun. the between song banter was the perfect mix of prepared comments, guaranteed to hit the mark, and genuine on-the-spot observations. One Man Show had a great intro about following a pathetic single man into a grocery store and watching him purchase a six of beer, a box of wine, some olives, and crisps and picturing him in three hours on his couch in front of a static-covered tv screen (although you hope that he's going to a party and bringing olives out of his concept of generosity.) I Will Kill Again was preambled with a some references to the Virginia Tech Massacres. he insisted that his more to do with computers and wanking it. which was actually a pretty dark line at the time, which is funny. Big Stuff was huge, actually. lots going on. it seems like a more sophisticated live song and definately something he thinks people should be paying attention to. Surprisingly, i'd say the Big Julie was the song of the night. the chorus has been punched up considerably and his vocals were dead on huge. very good. the main set concluded with Cunts and his "corny" band introduction (steve got very big cheers.)
the encore was two covers; Heaven by Talking Heads and Paranoid by Sabbath. the friends that had brought to the show (not jarvis fans by any stretch) thought that the encore was electrifying. jarvis teased the crowd by annoucing that some old material was coming up, saying that the band who wrote the song was from here, then added, 'ah, that shut you up.'
my only complaints would be the elimination of Black Magic from sunday's set and that the whole event seemed a bit short. overall, 9 out of 10. yep. it was a lot of fun. a lot of fun.
Frisko pretty much nails it. I was sorta in the front -- 15 or so feet from the stage, and it was a great evening. Jarvis' stage presence, banter, dancing etc. was fantastic. "Big Stuff" and "Big Julie" were indeed epic.
I think the reason "Black Magic" was deleted was because of a curfew and the show got started a little late. (There was a good 15 minutes of all the roadies examining what I think was a drum monitor.) Anyway, near the end of the set, I think I saw a roadie walk up to Jarvis and say something to him, so he led the band to close the set with "Running the World" rather than save it for the encores.
I'll be writing a full review tonight for my blog: undertherock.blogspot.com if anyone's interested.
Looking forward to hearing about tonight's show.
Also, there are pictures last night up on Pitchfork
Yeah, that's right about the sampler trouble. The stage crew were fiddling with it for ages, and I guess they never got it to work. Jarvis mentioned "technical problems" toward the end of the show.
Glad that I did get to see them do "Black Magic" on Monday, as it turned out to be a huge, glammy thing live with Jarvis completely into it, flailing about as manically as I've ever seen him.
I'll post more on both shows later after I get some sleep.
