This song has so many Cocker cliches and whatnot, but...

But - what the deal about being addicted to coffee whitener? Am I missing something here? Is it slang for something? Am I being painfully dim?

Coffee whitener ...well, I know that my mum used to like getting a tea spoon of the stuff (dry) and shoving it in her gob - it sorts of slowly disolves and is sweet gooey and chewy....maybe that's what he meant. Or not.

I always thought that the "addicted to coffee whitener" line was about kids thinking that they were taking cocaine and becoming fashionably addicted to it but actually they were just paying ridiculous prices for coffee whitener!

(Perhaps I just grew up in a particularly bad area!!!)

Yeah, that was my interpretation as well. The kids aren't actually addicted to coffee whitener, they're "addicted" to (what they think is either coke or speed, or just a generic powder which they've been told is "drugs" but which is actually) coffee whitener. Like that bit in Go where the poseur kids are pretending to be high on what are actually a load of aspirin and breath mints and stuff, I guess, or like what happens when a child is given alcohol and inavariably either pretends to really enjoy it, or to be drunk, or both... I hope that's what was meant, because it's so completely believable, and conjures up such a dead-on portrait in so few words...

It surprised me a bit, listening to the reissues, just how many lyrics from the unreleased tracks Jarv ended up recycling.

Ah, ok. I knew someone who would sell cigarette tobacco re-rolled in cig papers but with a bit of instant coffee sprinkled in to make it taste different, to the younger kids at school.

He once sold a few to a friend of mine, who thought he was getting stoned. He was furious when he found out...
