Song and record you least like?

Hi everyone...
One always like to make lists...

What are the Pulp songs you hate?
What are the Pulp records you wish they had never done?

As far as I'm concerned, I don't like "Seductive Barry" much. As regards Pulp's records, I guess "it" is the one!

We Love Life - The only bad Pulp record.

Minnie Timperley - no excuse for this one.

Hate is a strong word; I can't honestly say I hate any.   I think Someone Like The Moon is the worst thing they have done post-Freaks, yet I can't say I hate it.  Don't care too much for the Last Days of the Miners' Strike.

Hits!  Great DVD, but a fairly pointless CD.  Add to that the numerous Fire cash ins (I know none were really with Pulp's blessing)

Though  It, Freaks, and MOTU (ok, it's not a proper album) aren't of the quality of anything from Separations onwards, they are of interest, and I'm glad Pulp made them.

How could you hate "It"?

It's such a pretty, timeless record and such an extraordinary acheivement for a ragtag bunch of kids in 1981. As albums go, I think it's one of Pulp's best. Add Everybody's Problem and There Was to the tracklisting, and I think it probably was their best.

I don't hate It. It's just the one I like least.

Oh my gosh, I love "Seductive Barry" and "Someone Like the Moon"! Those are two of my very favorites!

There are all kinds of Pulp fans. I haven't heard anything they did that I didn't think was brilliant.

What are the Pulp songs you hate? A Little Soul, Glory Days
What are the Pulp records you wish they had never done? Most of my hated tracks are on TIH but I do love some tracks from there... I can't really say.

I can't understand why so many people dislike 'It', I love that album. It just has a really nice chilled out atmosphere about it and some of the songs are really uplifting at the same time.

My least favourite song is probably Have you seen her lately, it's just never grown on me. I don't have a least favourite album.

Least favourite record, excluding those poor Fire re-issues, would have to be We Love Life. I don't particularly think it's considerably worse than the early ones (yet to hear freaks, I should add) but at least for the 'eighties material I can see how they're improving and going somewhere, whereas We Love Life sounds like a band winding down and maybe not so sure of what it ought to be doing. In some ways it's the most "conventional" album they made.

Least favourite song, again excluding re-mixes, is probably Everybody's Problem. Thank dog Jarv didn't keep on copying Wham!

We Love Life has some really good tracks, Sunrise and Wickerman just blew me away.

I'm not overkeen on Seductive Barry, out of all the longer Pulp tracks it is definatly the weakest.

But Sunrise and Wickerman are, to me, EXACTLY where Pulp weren't as strong on WLL. They aspire to an epic feel, or something, but never come close to Acrylic Afternoons, David's Last Summer, I Spy, F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E. (that's really annoying to type out), This Is Hardcore or even Seductive Barry (which I will accept is definitely weaker than the others I just listed). Sunrise and Wickerman seem a bit more prosaic to me: both in subject matter and musical arrangement. No synths or atmospherics really.

I think 'Wickerman' is captured brilliantly and does get that epic feel. By far, Scott Walker's most accomplished track production-wise on the album. There are a couple of songs that are fairly strong but do lack a certain something imo, namely Weeds, I Love Life and Minnie - in a similar manner to I'm A Man, Sylvia and Glory Days from Hardcore. None of them quite capture the frisson of their live performances.

It does strike me that a lot of Pulp fans can be lumped into two categories - those who have a more or less equal liking for the 4 main Island records, slightly less for Seperations & Intro, and perhaps quite low regard for the 80s output and then there are those who swear by Seperations, Intro and above all, His'n'Hers. Anything afterwards, where there is a lack of synths and an increasing feeling of 'serious musicianship' to everything, seems to find apathy. In fact I'm sure that there are many who prefer Relaxed Muscle to We Love Life.

Interesting.  I like almost everything from Separations to We Love Life. His 'n' Hers is Pulp's finest moment, and Intro a close second. I tend to lump all the Gift records and the singles to the Sisters e.p. in the same boat, and think that was their best period.

I like Hardcore, We Love Life, Different Class and Separations in roughly that order, though they all rise and fall depending on how recently I hear them (hence Hardcore's lofty position).  But they all rank in my favorite ten albums ever.

As for It, Freaks and MOTU, I rarely listen to them, as they don't really bear any relation to the Pulp I know and love.  There are some good moments, but had I heard any first time around, I doubt I'd have become a Pulp fan through them.

Essentially it all starts for me with My Legendary Girlfriend; all that went before is a curiousity, and pretty much everything post is essential listening.

That's quite an interesting theory, and, for the record, I'd definitely be in the latter group. Not that I regard Separations as better than Different Class, or even close for that matter. I think when Mr Senior jumped ship, or perhaps a little bit before, they dropped their arty pretensions to a large extent, so that - in my view - there are an increasing percentage of songs from the late 'nineties on which sound a bit more like generic indie rock. And yep I like the synth, but it's probably the biolin as much as anything that I miss.

In defence of This Is Hardcore, I have a suspicion that my tendency to disregard is partly due to the fact that I've only ever owned it on cassette - Christmas '97 brought me my first CD player, so my only copy of OK Computer is also on cassette - and I think I'll really enjoy playing it more often when I buy the reissue on Monday. I was listening to it the other day and Jarv's voice sounds so fantastically clear, like he's there in the room. Best thing Chris Thomas did.

Yes, that sounds like me! Except that I love It, and Freaks, and parts of MotU, and Different Class, and This is Hardcore too. And I love most of Jarv's side-projects as well. I just think Pulp as a unit peaked in the early 90s (but what a grand peak it was!).

We Love Life, however, is cringeworthy and if it had been the first Pulp album I ever heard, I'd never bother to listen to anything else. Try playing it for your friends and watch their horrified reactions. The album just doesn't work... unless you really really really want to convince yourself it does.

But wait, are you suggesting that HnH, Seperations and Intro lack serious musicianship???

Present! (Although Birds In Your Garden pretty much saves WLL for me, and I do have high regard for Bad Cover Version and Minnie.)

I can't keep reading this thread; it hurts too much. The guy who set this website up agreed with me that "Seductive Barry" is one of Pulp's finest moments, so it's not just me. I think you're all nuts.

Speaking of the website, is it ever coming back? I loved reading all those track comments! What a great resource.

In answer to your question, "soon, I hope".

The track comments were really my reason for doing the site in the first place; I was always amazed at how widely Pulp fans' opinions of any given records could differ. At some point, I'll try and add something to make it easier to submit reviews rather than having to write them and e-mail them.

I love Seductive Barry.

Tell me about it... The technique I eventually picked up is to type out the FEELINGCALLEDLOVE letters (without periods/full stops) first, and then go back to the beginning and just alternately press -> and . Makes it a lot easier.
