I was just wondering the other day what were the chances after seeing Blur announce a 30th for The Great Escape.

Slightly disappointing, it's kind of the bare minimum - Glastonbury '95 finally officially released and the vinyl aperture version reissued after years of being out of print.

I was really hoping for the remainder of the demos from here https://pulpwiki.net/Pulp/DifferentClassLPDemos. I count 7 tracks as being unreleased. Would an extra CD with of all the demos and the BSides really have hurt? The proper version of Ansaphone still hasn't been physically reissued.

The 1983(?) version of Something Changed was also on my wishlist.

If Mark is reading this, sorry, I don't mean to complain! But he gets what it is to be a fan. I assume it's Jarvis making the decisions and he has no interest in excavation...

Also, Mark has said before that he wanted to release the video of Glastonbury '95 but it needed to be synced-up with the audio properly. Maybe BBC will do that to coincide with DC's 30th and just show it on TV/the iPlayer.

The lack of interest in bonus material doesn't bode well for a WLL deluxe. I guess DC is a low-effort reissue whereas WLL needs the additional songs to sell it.

But yeah, a bit of a missed opportunity considering this may never be superdeluxe'd again.

I hate when they release a resmatered album and not the bsides. Job half done.

Anyway, i'll stream, but no buy for me unless the remastering is groundbreaking.

As for no new songs, or never heard song, I guess they are keeping it for another release, like a box set or anthology. Like Oasis and the disappointing Morning Glory reissue, they don't need to do much this year as the 30th anniversary is a sell on its own.

Mmm, don't think I will worry.  A lot to pay for an album I already have.

It's a but rubbish but there's nothing left in the vaults for this album really. I can't see myself buying it until it drops drastically in price. I'm not a vinyl collector anyway so can easily live without it.
At least it looks better than that hideous new Blur art for Great Escape.

Sold-out already on the official store?! No wonder they didn't vote throwing the kitchen sink at it, no need, we're the small % who always want "MORE":

There was only one winner in the Britpop Wars: Pulp. They were in a Different Class...
Different Class (originally released October 30, 1995) is Pulp's most successful album, achieving multi-platinum sales and international acclaim, winning the 1996 Mercury Music Prize and debuting at #1 on the UK Album Chart. It also produced four Top Ten singles, including Common People.

Four months prior to the release of the album, the band headlined the Pyramid Stage at Glastonbury Festival on Saturday 24 June. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of what is widely regarded as one of the best records of the era, this legendary Glastonbury performance, the audio wholly restored and released here for the first time, has been paired with the remastered album (each cut over 2 LPs) and is released as a deluxe 4LP boxset.

The audio has been remastered/mastered by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road, overseen by Jarvis ****er and Mark Webber, and is presented in a sturdy slipcase with a comprehensive, 28-page booklet featuring extensive notes from new interviews with the band members, plus previously unseen images from photographers Rankin and Donald Milne (who took the photos for the original release) and the bands own archives. The original aperture sleeve design, which invited purchasers to Choose your own front cover, came with six double-sided inserts/art cards of alternative cover images depicting cardboard cutouts of the band members in a variety of situations. This has been fully recreated and a 12 by 12 poster featuring miniatures of the cutouts themselves is also included.

I have unfortunately been taken in by wanting the aperture as I had to sell my original when I needed the money. A lot of cash though!

From what I remember when I asked Mark a very long time ago, he didn't seem to rate the Different Class demos of the album songs - something along the lines of them just being inferior versions with no real differences. Obviously us nerds would beg to differ, but I don't think we can hold out much hope of seeing them released.

That proto-Something Changed would be great to hear. If anyone has a copy though, it's very well buried - I don't think Mark has it.

Yeah, I can see that view but for completeness and with folk happy to pay for it, it's a relatively easy win.

If this sells well maybe they could mop-up the BSides and demos for RSD next year...?

I may be in the minority here, but i would much rather prefer a 2 LP edition of just the album -- no Glastonbury or any other extras -- that listed for something like 40 USD.

I'll be honest......

On the first impression, I was very disappointed. HOWEVER this will give us all a chance to open the Choose Your Own Cover Vinyl, it's remastered, Glastonbury 95 mixed properly, AND it's affordable. I'm all for it.

What's with the difference in price between Amazon France and uK though??????

The only downside is that it will devalue the original 12". That's not a bad thing really as it will stop tossers and dealers selling them for stupid money

 Yeah i meant the demos

I'd pay good money for a great remix, or a cleaning like the beatles did. We'll see about that remaster but usually, it's a letdown.

I'm surprised it's not getting the Dolby Atmos treatment. Maybe a blu-ray audio in conjunction with SuperDeluxeEdition ?

I don't have DC vinyl, and I know some "regular" reissued versions are cheaper and can be found in many stores. But, I keep waiting if they would release an anniversary version, like His 'n' Hers 25th Anniversary reissue in 2019. Now it is. There is an original aperture sheet version on Discogs asking for $900. That is crazy.

It is a pity there are no b-sides. Glasto 1995 is the changing point for the band. People who are not big fans like us probably prefer Glasto. It is understandable that they put them together as a special anniversary reissue. The band/manager/company think this differently ...

Yes, still very excited about the release and I can choose my own cover. Yes, I am a fool. And, hopefully, the new vinyl sound will be better.

Just reading through the thread, and all the missed opportunities, and the fact it's selling well regardless...

Maybe they will do another release of B-sides and rarities from all eras at some point

It never occurred to me that the 06 deluxe editions are very scarce hese days. Makes the decision not to include those tracks a strange one.

Fingers-crossed they act on the demand and consider further material for reissue. Even for RSD next year they could do the Different Class offcuts - can anyone think of a snappy name for this? B-Sides & Broken Biscuits?

Vinyl 1

Side A:

Mile End
PTA
Ansaphone
Live Bed Show Extended
Catcliffe Shakedown (demo)*

Side B:

Common People radio edit
Disco 2000 7" edit
Common People Motiv 8 Club Mix **
Disco 2000 Motiv 8 Mix **

Vinyl 2

Side A:

Misshapes (demo)
Sorted (demo)
Something Changed (demo)
Feeling Called Love (demo)
Disco 2000 (demo)

Side B:

Live Bed Show (demo)
I Spy (demo)
Ansaphone (demo)
Don't Lose It (demo)
Paula (demo)
We Can Dance Again (demo)

* For space reasons across the vinyl sides or to quote TFL buses "to regulate the service", I've put Catcliffe here.

** Remixes don't do much for me but it's interesting to note the comments today on this news from casual fans that the Common People dance remix is a big omission as it was "everywhere" at the time.

There is potential for a 7"vinyl singles boxset in Pulp's Island output. Some of these singles like Misshapes/Sorted weren't even issued on vinyl at the time, right?

They could also have added a DVD bonanza of live material & TV appearances from 1995/'96 but 99% of it is on Youtube and probably not worth the time to research and the cost to license. A doc of the making of the album is not really Pulp's thing. The Story Of Common People is the best we're likely to get.

I do hope that plenty of Mark's camcorder footage is chucked-onto the film release next year.

One final thought - maybe the lyrics of PTA make Jarvis feel uncomfortable now and I can also imagine him being embarrassed by Paula so it might have been easier for him to stick to the album tracks...

If this does well and Island/ Universal are happy with the numbers, do you think it might help with swaying them to do a WLL deluxe? Or does this lie more with Jarvis wanting to do it? Or is it both Jarvis and Universal that need swaying?

A bit of both apparently. Didn't Mark say recently at one of his book-talks that Pulp didn't have much of a relationship with anyone at Island/Universal these days?! Hasn't stopped DC30 from being created!

I don't buy vinyl - no record player, and if I start collecting it's a very slippery, expensive slope! - so I will pick up the CD edition. I find it hard to believe it's been 30 years... funny how it all falls away...

Would have been nice if they'd included a Blu-ray of the Glastonbury show, seeing as they've gone to the effort of providing the audio, but I suspect that may have pushed prices up even further.

Ya, I already ordered, but it is expensive, really!! If they want to reissue TIH, just a normal reissue, or plus b-sides, please. Glastonbury 1998 has been released as This Is Glastonbury back to 1998.

"This Is Glastonbury" only contained seven of the fourteen songs performed in 1998 (ten if you had the expanded Japanese edition), so I would absolutely welcome a full release of that show.

I really dont see the appeal of live releases attached to those reissues. I understand them in the 90s, but now, everything is available on youtube, in great quality. What's the point ? Who's buying this bar the die hard collectors ?

I cant see a casual fan going like "oh i'm buying this because there's that live performance on it". Might as well just re-release the album only.

It's not mentioned in the announcement, but presumeably it's the remixed version of the concert, only heard once on radio - which I'm very keen to get in CD quality. Mark mentioned in his Giles interview that it was going to be part of the abandoned 25th anniversary, if he could arrange it, so hopefully that's what they've managed to get. A cassette recording of the FM radio broadcast is tucked away on YouTube but I'm really looking forward to an upgrade.

Problem is that YouTube, like all streaming content, is the definition of ephemera, things can disappear at any moment.

Plus these Super Deluxe Editions aren't aimed at casual fans, they're for collectors and audiophiles who want a high-end product with all the bells and whistles.

And a professionally mixed and mastered live recording will always be superior to a YouTube upload, not least due to heavy compression.

Plus Different Class is the one Pulp cash cashcow that Universal can rely upon. It made back its investment, neither of Hardcore or WLL did. Its popularity means that it's always going to be ripe for reissue plucking. And the label presumably know they still have content they can tack-on to another version in the future to get folk to spend on it again...

I think that they made their money back on "This is Hardcore" and it seems to have been reappraised more favourably in recent years. Maybe that will be reissued in 3 years. I wouldn't call it a cash cow but there's money to be made.

Hard to find accurate sales on the albums - the last BPI milestones were quadruple platinum >1.2m for DC and gold >100k for TIH - which has been the case for the latter since April 1998. So it hasn't reached the next milestone of Gold (300k) since the month of release. Worldwide, another...75k?
Say 200k in total as an estimate. Average retail price £12.99 (cheaper now than in 1998!) = £2.6m

Costs...a year on-and-off in two of the best studios at the time in Britain (Townhouse and Olympia) with one of the best producers in the game (Chris Thomas) and his staff.
Manufacturing of physical albums. The distributors and record stores' cut.

Marketing. Cost of promo videos - between £300k - £500k? The one for This Is Hardcore has often been cited as costing £250k but in one of Mark's book-talks this year he gave a much lower figure.

Would all that add-up more than two and a half mill? Probably comes down to how high the day-rates in those studios were but...potentially.

We Love Life was granted a silver award (60k units sold) upon release but has never gone higher. These awards are for trade sales as opposed to retail, and when we were analysing More's numbers, the opening week of WLL was reported as being c 25k so it's likely that it didn't actually even physically sell 60k units to the public in 2001/02 or the intervening years.

More must not be far off that 60k number, it's still in the top 100 physical charts after 3 months. Mercury nominations for 2025 are announced on Wednesday, that should help prolong its stay in the charts if listed. The fact that it wasn't granted a silver award on release is clearly a reflection in the decline of physical product since the millenium.

Given We Love Life had an even longer gestation than Hardcore with other expensive studios being used (Metropolis and Air plus Cosford Mills for the failed try-out with Chris Thomas - at least Steve's own studio was used for demos/early try-outs which would have saved on costs) and although only two music videos were made (compared to five for both DC and TIH) and the marketing campaign not as glossy as Hardcore, it was still a commercial failure.

Island's attempts to reduce Pulp's terms on a new contract in 2002 were hardly surprising, in the light of all that. I do wonder if Pulp's consistent reputation as one of the best live bands in the business from 1994 onwards gave them any leverage in talks with Island/Universal in 2002 (i.e we headlined Leeds/Reading in 2000 and are second from top in 2002 - you need to market us better and pick the singles to sell. To which Universal wouldn't have been blamed from replying "Well, give us a ****ing single that we can sell, then!"

The press release at the time suggested that it was simply a case of the band not being happy with the new offer and all parties amicably deciding to part ways.

As an aside, I've seen articles/heard reports over the years that have said "Pulp, who have sold over 10m records around the world throughout their career..." and I'm doubtful about that. The only "proof" for that figure on Wikipedia last time I checked a few years ago was one news article which could have plucked it from anywhere. About half that figure sounds closer to the mark, I think. Hard to have accurate figures across the globe but it doesn't seem that Pulp sold in huge quantities beyond the UK even at their mid-90s peak.

A nice contrast between the way these bands work: Blur are re-releasing their 1995 album, The Great Escape in an utterly hideous AI slop sleeve, on a bright yellow disc, with the entire 52 minutes of the album on one side and the B-sides on the reverse.

Plus these Super Deluxe Editions aren't aimed at casual fans, they're for collectors and audiophiles who want a high-end product with all the bells and whistles.

And a professionally mixed and mastered live recording will always be superior to a YouTube upload, not least due to heavy compression.

Yeah i know that's why i said die hard collectors and maybe live enthusiasts... But is there a market for that on Pulp ? I'm not one of them, i used to watch a lot of of their gigs back in the day, but not anymore, maybe sometimes of when a new one comes out. But i wouldnt buy a release just for that. So i dont really get why they included that in such a "casual" buyer release. It does not make much sense. The gig alone i would understand. but would not buy. I suppose they will sell few but at a high price.

I agree about streaming though, that's why i buy everything on CD. It's probably the most reliable format in the long run.

A nice contrast between the way these bands work: Blur are re-releasing their 1995 album, The Great Escape in an utterly hideous AI slop sleeve, on a bright yellow disc, with the entire 52 minutes of the album on one side and the B-sides on the reverse.

Just like Pulp and Oasis, this is a lazy release. All bsides are available on their 21 boxset releases 13 years ago. I guess all those bands understood there was no need to be adventurous... the 30th anniversary is the selling point on its own.

-- Edited by Eamonn on Sunday 7th of September 2025 05:07:38 PM

Yes, I've always been a bit wary of that figure. I tried to do a bit of digging, this website tells us the figures that are quoted on the wiki. So we know that the Island albums sold a combined total of 1,760,000 units but there are a few questions i.e. when was this last updated? What about non-UK sales? What about singles?

Island announced in September 1995 that "Mis-Shapes" / "Sorted For Es and Wizz" had pre-orders of 400,000 units and a Pulp People newsletter told us that "Something Changed" sold just over 100,000. We may reasonably conclude that "Common People" and "Disco 2000" combined would have sold around half a million so let's assume that the total for the "Different Class" singles was around 1 million. We're still under 3 million total sales.

The only other Pulp singles that made a significant impact on the charts were "Help the Aged" and "This is Hardcore" which landed either side of the top 10. Still probably only a couple of hundred thousand units.

There was also the "Countdown 1992-1983" compilation that reached number 10 in 1996 then was reissued a couple of years later. Not sure how many copies this sold but it did stay in the top 40 for 4 weeks (plus another 2 in the top 75) so it could have sold similar to or more than "We Love Life".

On top of that, there's the Fire and Gift material, the original versions of which probably sold out when Pulp became big. Fire also made the first 3 albums available on CD in the mid-1990s along with "Masters of the Universe" and Island released "Intro". Then there were a good few compilations of Fire material in the late 1990s and the 2006 Island reissues. Whilst none of these strayed anywhere near the charts, they probably sold over time for a reduced price (supermarket checkouts and bargain bins).

With all this considered, I'd say your estimate of 5m total sales is quite reasonable. Maybe going as far as 7.5 would be too optimistic.

half the price of an original aperture. which i wish i bought 10 years ago when it was much much cheaper.

this will do. the artwork was the only thing i was hoping for with the reissue. so i consider it a win.

From memory i got my original for a reasonable amount by buying a decent disc with damaged covers, and vice versa, then pairing the good bits together.

I've been quite anti DC30, but I'm tempted now by the chance of getting my hands on a replica of the Jamie Hewlett comic. I'd love to own one of those. I've got one of the mini replicas, but have long craved the full size one. Hopefully they'll appear on ebay, just like zillions of the listening party bags did.

The mis-shapes t-shirt and t-towel look nice. Still got my original skinny fit misshapes t from 1996, stayed in nice condition cos the body it was bought for turned into a flabby fit one. Shame the poster is A3; I'd like some more full sized Pulp posters, but originals are really expensive. They made some lovely posters in the 90s.

The merch is lovely, especially the Misshapes stuff but plastering the words "30th anniversary" over most of the products, dates them quickly. And also makes it look like the anniversary is as important as the original/actual album!

Oh I think I have one of those comics!  Must go look in my pulp box(es).
My fave pulp top was a stripey one I got with an embroidered pulp logo, probably in 95/96.  Got stolen when my rucksack got lifted on a trip to australia.  Thieving bastard left my cds though THANK GOD

Is anybody in Canada? As it is close to the release date, and Canada Post is still on strike ... I worry and was wondering when I can get my copy. :(
On the other hand, the strike saves my money from buying the new 30th anniversary merch. ^^"

To be honest, I try to avoid buying things from Amazon if I can buy them at local or independent stores. I know purchasing from Amazon is an option tho.

I saw the comic will come alone when purchasing the LP set at independent record stores in UK, which is kind of annoying to me. I understand that they encourage people to support independent record stores, but for a fan who already pre-ordered and wants the comic. Anyway, I gave up the idea of having the comic ...

Off topic, I am glad that DC has the idea of the aperture sheet rather than releasing it for multiple versions for different covers

Yes, Leo VK, sometimes of this parish has confirmed. Despite a direct quote from Jarvis WAX-ing lyrical in the press release about it being 45 rpm!

I caved, despite being skint, rang up a random record store in the Midlands that was listed by Pulp's social media as being a reseller who include the Common People comic with each order. As my local indie store didn't have any of the comics left. With postage came to £93, I think.

Glad you had the chance to buy a copy. It should be available for anyone who wants one. I'm not a vinyl collector so I'm not suffering from too much fomo. I'm tempted by the cd just to get the drone track.

That's weird. Why press it on 2xLP if not 45rpm? The original email definitely quote Jarvis saying 45rpm, but to be fair, doesn't say anything about it being 45rpm on SOV or Recordstore. Maybe someone just got muddled up, and this version is pressed 'normally' whereas the original was compromised somehow, by being too condensed.

Only pre-ordered the CD myself, for the silly and shallow reason that I wanted the stickers. Still acting like a 12 year old. Resisted the LP, just too expensive, though if I ever see it below £65, I'd probably get it.

Did go into HMV today, to see if there was any promotion or prominence, but it was just in the racks with everything else.

Edit: just browsing IG, saw this from Jarvis in a post today "There is a double 45rpm pressing of the album" so if he posts this stuff himself, he still thinks it's issued at 45rpm.

Well, its an impressive beast of a record however I cant help but feel angry about firstly original orders didnt come with the Common People comic, and secondly this farce over it not being 45rpm.

Ya, I rather have the comic than the sticker, anyway, the most important part is the record. Maybe I will end up find the comic on EBay or any where.

The 45rpm, there must be some mistakes sad. But, I probably cannot tell the differences if I do not play two versions at the same time.

Yeah, I assume that's a conscious decision. Some superdeluxes are kept off streaming. Would be nice to have Glastonbury '95 available to the masses, I guess. I suppose it might appear in the coming days/weeks when they're happy with the physical units sold.

I'm really delighted with the Glastonbury CD - it sounds terrific, a great upgrade from off-air cassette copies of the Pulp-approved remix.

Anyone noticed anything noteworthy about the album remaster? I've not encountered anything as exciting as the extra "oh yeah" in Lipgloss yet, though there are a few mastering differences. I'm not especially convinced that they went all the way back to the master tapes... or if they did, that it was worth it.

It's generally louder throughout compared to the 1995 CD, very similar (maybe identical) to the 2006 remaster. It's not exactly 'loudness wars', but it's noticeable.

The transitions between some of the tracks sound a bit clumsy to me. I Spy fades to silence rather than continuing directly into Disco 2000, though the start of Disco 2000 still opens with a bit of noise from the end of I Spy. Underwear also fades to silence, removing a sort of clicking noise that was on the original/2006 versions. There's 2.5 extra seconds of silence at the end of Something Changed that shouldn't be there, almost 2 extra seconds at the end of Sorted, and 1.5 extra seconds at the end of Monday Morning.

The start of Live Bed Show is missing Jarvis taking a breath.

I have read some reviews saying the cd is brickwalled. It's so long since I heard the original cd anyway. I'll only buy the new cd if it turns up very cheaply.

Looks about the same as the 2006 version to my eyes, comparing them visually. It doesn't sound too bad but some might be more sensitive than me. FWIW I think More is brickwalled.

I read somewhere that brickwalling is bad for the hearing - as there are no lulls in intensity, the mechanism by which the ears protect themselves from loud noise relaxes and are not protected. I don't listen to music very loud, but getting older, it's worrying that more releases are following this pattern. Does anyone have technology to check if this is true of More and DC30?

Brickwalling is not True or False. It's a question of levels. You can try to open some tracks with a software like Audacity and see how the graph looks like.

I used myself Audacity to boost the sound levels of the It/Freaks/Separation remasters (2012) to reach the level on the 2006 H&H/DC/TIH remasters. I also boosted the sound level on the Intro original CD.

Basically it's the variation between the loud and quiet parts, the dynamic range. When something is brickwallef it means the loud bits and the quiet bits are all at the same volume ie loud.

Exactly - the intention is to make the quiet parts louder. It becomes a problem if this end up with the music sounding like it's pounding in your ears rather than rising and falling naturally. I don't think Different Class sounds bad, but you can spot the difference if you compare the versions side by side using the visualiser in Audacity. The larger the line, the louder the sound.

I've just used one side of the stereo for each track, to make the comparisons easier to glance at - there's little visual difference between left and right for these tracks.

Common People

Top to bottom:
Blue - CD single (daytime)
Red - 95 CD
Green - 2006 deluxe edition CD
Black - 2025 30th anniversary CD

Verdict: seems to be getting louder with each release

Common People comparisons

Sorted for E's & Wizz

Top to bottom:
Blue - CD single (Mis-Shapes & Sorted) (n.b. this deliberately trimmed the first few seconds of near-silence)
Red - 95 CD
Green - 2006 deluxe edition CD
Black - 2025 30th anniversary CD (this adds a few seconds to the end, unnecessarily)

Verdict: the single mix was noticeably louder than the 95 album, so it's not as though this is anything new!

Sorted comparisons

More

A selection of the tracks from More:
Spike Island
Tina
Got to Have Love
Background Noise

Verdict: GTHL hurts my ears

Examples from More

Do artists not care about "loudness wars"? Maybe you have to be an audiophile to really let it bug you but Jarvis has produced records and has sat in on remastering of this album at Abbey Road. He's also suffered from tinnitus.

You would think he'd cares about this although shilling the new DC deluxe LP as a 45RPM record rather than 33 suggests maybe not. New money for old, louder rope...

The thinking seems to be that since the majority of listening is done via headphones so a narrow dynamic range is desirable so people hear a consistent sound level. As a corolkary to this volume is also boosted. Who knows why artists agree to it. As has been mentioned More is brickwalled and I presume the band had final listen and were happy with the mastering so I guess they're happy with how it sounds. Same must be true for DC. I'm 49 and I know my hearing is not great so I can only imagine what Jarvis and the other band members hearing must be like.

Yes, thanks for that, it's interesting to see.

There are pictures online of some life sized DC cutouts at a few record shops (Bear Tree, HMV Manchester). Looks like they've made some new ones up for promo, which is lovely to see.

The cutout pictures in the DC30 booklet reflect those used in the Spike Island video, which makes me think DC30 has been planned since before SI / More - I just assumed Island / Universal were reacting to the fantastic response to More.

Do we know when this version was re-mastered? Sure I read somewhere that this version was worked on by Jarvis & Mark. The 2006 deluxe was remastered at Town House by Tim Burrell, but I thought I read somewhere that Jarvis & Steve worked on a DC remaster at Abbey Road at some point. Confusing.

His 'n' Hers 25th anniversary release in 2019 was remastered at Abbey Road, supervised by Steve Mackey according to the press release. There was a photo posted earlier that year of Steve and Jarvis at the mixing desk together, with Geoff Pesche, "working on something special to be revealed soon".

In Steve's statement in late 2022 when the new Pulp tour was first announced, he said: "Jarvis and I remastered Pulp's entire Universal Records back catalogue together just over two years ago at Abbey Road Studios. It was a huge pleasure to do that and review our songs and recordings together." (e.g. quoted by the NME here)

When the Record Store Day version of Intro was released in 2024, this was also described as having been remastered at Abbey Road. (There was no mention of Steve or Jarvis.)

The press release for DC30 included "The audio has been remastered/mastered by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road, overseen by Jarvis ****er and Mark Webber", e.g. reported by SDE here. (So it sounds as though this might not be from the same remastering session that Steve was involved in. Certainly I would have thought they would have made a feature of Steve's involvement, if so. Or... perhaps someone credited Jarvis and Mark when it should have been Jarvis and Steve?)

I'd be surprised if they have re-remastered Different Class again since circa 2019 but perhaps... a few years have passed, maybe Jarvis wanted another opinion from Mark to listen to what he, Steve and Geoff Pesche had done.

My vinyl deluxe set arrived today. It's an absolutely gorgeous-looking thing. The alternate covers are all glossily reproduced as cardboard sleeves. Both albums have their own plastic sleeves, the wonderful "Please understand..." album message is embossed beautifully.

Mild spoilers below so I'll put in the spoiler tag...

Spoiler

I haven't listened to the records yet, Discogs is always full of audiophile critiques, I don't want to feel bad about having spent a lot of money on my favourite ever album so haven't read what's been said but apparently there are mutterings of disapproval. The whole 45 RPM actually being 33RPM is a little embarassing to be honest, and given the price-point of this release, is something that Universal/Pulp should probably front-up. I can't see a mention of the album being cut at 45RPM any more on some of the online stores selling it i.e HMV, Rough Trade - does anyone know if the descriptions have been quietly edited?!

I've checked the Midweek Charts and Different Class is currently at number 13! That will likely fall as all the pre-orders will have been counted already but still, it's probably in the region of 1k-2k units sold. With the vinyl box retailing at nearly £100, that's not a bad old return. More impressive, in a way, is the fact that Different Class was at number 128 in the charts last week - i.e the standard version. Which, (depressingly, in a way) is probably higher than More. The Mercury Prize effect wasn't as much as might have been expected. More was at number 99 in the physical charts (but not the overall charts) the week of the Prize, and is at 94 the week after.

A shame that Mark or Pulp didnt reach out to certain fans regarding sources for Glastonbury 1995 - I know the original radio broadcast CD is out there.

I received my vinyl box set last week. The situation regarding the Common People comic sucked as its available with new orders, yet the pre-orders didnt have it. I bought the CD Reissue today, and asked if I could buy a copy of the comic, and was sadly told no.....however, "take this, just dont say you got it from me"..........and now im the proud owner of a complete Different Class 30 Year Vinyl and CD :)

Fair play, you deserve the comic after buying DC30 more than once!

I assume the mix on this release for the Glastonbury '95 tracks is of equal quality to the radio broadcast at least? Judging by the notes, they've clearly spent time on locating the best sources to make it sound as good as possible.

I have 3 different versions of Different Class CD, I got the vinyl box set today. I don't know what the sounds like in 45rpm and 33rpm, but it doesn't like Jarvis said when the news was released. I still feel a little upset. Many people shared the DC comics on social media. But, for the price + shipping + import tax/duty, I paid CAD$35 for duty for the vinyl set, I gave up, at least the pre-order sticker sheet is pretty. If I can buy CD set and get the comics, I definitely want one.

The Brickwalling thing is really interesting, thanks for all the information.

The mix of the Glastonbury set is very much different than what is already in public domain. A couple of songs sound like there is no difference (common people for sure as it was released on the misshapes single - I'm certain that it is the same mix, Disco 2000 sounds pretty much as radio broadcast, but I assure you - this new version of Glastonbury 95 is far superior to anything else out there. I won't spoiler too much, but just listen to DYRTFT?, and Pink Glove in particular. A lot more focus on the synths :)

As for DC 30 itself, there are subtle differences, not just in volume but certain instruments are more apparent. Feeling Called Love, Common People, Monday Morning, Sorted all majorly improved. As for the others, I'm struggling to notice too much different apart from volume levels.

Different Class has gone in at number 38 in the album charts this week. Number 9 in Physical charts.

Well, I got stiffed on the stickers - I pre-ordered the CD only, from the 'stickers' link at Sound Of Vinyl - but they didn't come.

Not surprised, I bet they only went out with the LP, but disappointed I spent an extra £3 on the shop price.

(Not disappointed with the CD though - Pink Glove and especially Acrylic Afternoons are tremendous.)

Can anyone share anything about the stickers, as I can't find images or info about them?

@inspirit, I took the photo when I got it a few days ago. I can post it to PulpWiki, maybe next week. But I have not had a chance to open the Vinyl set yet

Btw, DC is on the This weeks most collected vinyl records & CDs on Discogs. Hope the sale can continue for a while.

Thanks for sharing @luckyduck , they look lovely.

The LP's still available from the Pulp shop, and despite all my whining about the price, I'm quite tempted now.

It looks so nice in AA's review and reveal. I was trying to spend my money on actual audio this year, and not just stuff... but as far as stuff goes, this is pretty gorgeous.

Super Deluxe Edition, who do Blu-Ray audio releases of classic albums - often with Dolby Atmos sound which is the latest best-in-class listening experience for audiophiles, did attempt to do a Blu-Ray for Different Class but were rejected. A shame as they've done some big names (the Human League's Dare was a recent release) and released over 50 in this format now.

I fancy the Air Virgin Suicides super deluxe, plan to treat myself this winter (self employed, and winter is when I work out if I made any money for the year, and can let loose a bit). I adore that album, and want the demo and unheard session tracks. It has the bluray dics, but I won't benefit from it, as my hi-fi set up is 20+ year old Denon, and my bluray player only outputs to the crappy little speakers on my titchy little telly.

I'm not an audiophile, never had opportunity to find out if I'm sophisticated enough to hear the difference. I am a cinephile though, and I really should get sorted out to watch and listen to my films on a better quality set up.

Is there an error in the booklet Because one of the boy cover Something Changed single is upside down. Or have I missed something over the years? Got the CD version in Melbourne over the weekend and will try and get the vinyl from locale shop here. Fun fact. I dont own any versions of Different Class on vinyl - like Earmonn said further up Ive always tried to wait it out for an original pressing of the mix'n'match covers.

Well, I ordered a copy, despite it being crazy expensive with tariffs. I'd never bought Different Class on vinyl in hopes one day they'd rerelease it with an aperture sleeve or I'd one day be able to get my hands on one of the originals. Excited for it!
