Long time lurker first time poster here. John Smith has a new film showing at Kate MacGarry, near Shoreditch High Street/Brick Lane in east London, which is well worth seeing if you can. It straddles a documentary and an art film, and is pleasingly dry humoured. Smith was Jarvis's tutor at St Martins. Jarvis attributes his turn to the prosaic, lyrically-speaking, to the window incident (and sometimes Scott Walker), but I can feel Smith's influence in Pulp, too.
The film is worth seeing even without the Pulp content (which is brief but gives a fresh perspective).
