Hi, folks!

While we anticipate Pulp's sets tonight and tomorrow at Hammersmith (some of us, sadly, from our bedrooms) - here's something else to chat about.

A while back, on my Twitter page, I posted a meme - it's a familiar format, with a pic of an iceberg and a load of statements about Pulp, the idea being that there's lots below the surface and the deeper you get dragged into the forum, the more obscure and bizarre things become. So there's a few fun facts in there, but then I thought... god, you must all know so much about Pulp, there's got to be so many funny little factoids and suchlike.

So, does anyone have any nuggets they'd like to share?

(I revisited the meme because I just ended up on Pulp wiki, on the page for The Will to Power - and I discovered that Russell dedicated the song once to Arthur Scargill, Nelson Mandela, and the IRA. And also, people used to call him Hitler in his local pub because they apparently share a resemblance, though I'm not sure I agree with that...)

More a funny/interesting story: I was at Sturdy's book launch party 20 years ago and we were treated to a soundtrack of Pulp songs throughout the evening. The last song was "Silence" and when the chorus kicked in, either Magnus Doyle or Tim Allcard (I can't remember which one) shouted "Oh, shut up Jarvis!". Oh, and it was great to meet those two plus some other ex-members/associates.

You can read more about the launch party here: www.mark-sturdy.co.uk/pulp/launch.html
John Nicholls and Tim Allcard are in the top left photo, not sure who is in the right photo. Steven Havenhand is next to Nick further down. David Hinkler is further down and to the right. Not sure who the other two are on the left and Magnus Doyle is at the very bottom. Hopefully Sturdy can fill in some of the blanks.

Second photo is Nick Robinson and Martin Lilleker (RIP), the two towards the bottom are Jon Short and Jim Sellers.

That very same launch party was where I went for a number 1, and I was stood talking to Nick and Hawley in the bogs - and was the first time that Nick called me a nutter (for buying the original FON demo tape from Energy Music)

This is from Melody Maker, 1995: (http://www.acrylicafternoons.com/melody95c.html)

Banks also tells me that, whenever Pulp are on tour, he shares a room with Russell, apparently the excuse for all manner of sinister activities.

"He [Russell] takes to running round the room with no clothes on. Why? God knows. He runs a bath, and you'd think he'd then go in the bathroom. But no. He has to take all his clothes off, then start running the bath, and he'll be running round the room getting his things together. And I'll be there trying to watch 'Sportsnight', or something. lt's not a pretty sight."

Steve Mackey- Pulp's dashing 29-year-old ladykiller who shares a flat with Justin from Elastica and is a dead ringer for Alex James from Blur verifies this when he says, "You just don't enter the room when Nick and Russell are in there. You stay away. I've looked in at times and there's, like, pants down, breasts showing, all sorts."

It soon transpires that Banks has been fairly intimate with Jarvis Cocker as well.

"I went camping with Jarvis a few years back," he recalls, preparing to shatter some illusions, "and it really pissed it down, and there were eight of us, and we were all piled into this caravan, sleeping on the floor in sleeping bags. And l'm on the floor one night, and I look up, and there's Jarvis' bollocks in front of my face! And he's trying to lower himself onto his sleeping bag! And l'm, like, gerroff! Get'em out me way! Eurgh. Horrible. A terrible sight. A vision of hell. He doesn't wear much underwear, you see, so it was balls out for the lads. Frightening. It'll haunt me for the rest of me life, that."

In that new podcast, Jarvis reveals mis-shapes idea and title came from chocolate sold in his nearby shop that didn't have the standard size/shape and were sold cheaper.

There we go, it ends the debate we had on that locked thread. Pulp is a band about odd looking chocolates.

This isn't a fun fact but an obscure one I think except for it being written in a Sunday Times interview in 1998. I have been rereading the interviews on Acrylic Afternoons website and i had never in all my years read this about JC and it sounds traumatic - it said when he was 14 he reluctantly got into an Escort van with two middle aged men who then tried to sexually assault him. He had only got in because his mother had been telling him to be more sociable! It says he got away by outwitting them with sarcasm or something like that but I mean I never ever read that before and I've read a lot about Pulp. I dont think i would've forgotten reading that. What a horrible experience.

Yeah, I think that's the only time he's referred to it and I remember being taken aback too.

And, understandably, I guess there's a fair bit of personal stuff that he will never disclose . If he does a second book, I'm sure it'll be in a similar vein to Good Pop Bad Pop - pretty light-hearted and not going too much into the awful moments...being tabloid fodder after the Brits'96, dubious drug-use and mental health struggles during that time etc.

There's also one interview where the band talk about their own 'first time'. Steve's was with a very attractive, blonde, 27 year-old woman... and he was 15 at the time. Which is honestly quite sad and scary.

Yeah, I'm still a bit gobsmacked after reading it earlier in the week and I wondered was it a well known fact that I'd missed. And how did he deal with that. Did he ever tell his mam or what. Has he just kept that to himself mostly. In rereading those interviews though it comes across to me more now how Jarvis says things like 'well, I'm from the North' when asked if he'd ever gone to therapy (in relation to the breakdown) etc and I 100% get him. I'd feel the same because, well, I'm of a certain age and from ireland.

I've a pedo story too, andy - basically a pedo celeb (z list celeb) was invited to our school when I was 10 and we all had to get our photo taken sitting on his lap. Nothing happened to any of us as far as I'm aware. I only found out last year about him. That's one weird photo to look at now. Found it last year after that. There's an obscure Jean fact!

I have heard that Jarvis story before. Always horrible thinking about it. Apparently, they weren't expecting him to talk back and dropped him off. Glad he got out of it. It's an absolute nightmare situation, I think it's every parent's nightmare.

Yeah Jean, this is scary stuff. And a lot are involved in school related activities.

The one i encountered was a bus driver for a school trip we did. This is the worry number one for my kid, because you never know who could be one.

That's scary, Andy. It's a huge worry. We hear so much now but a lot of it can be historical too. It shocks me how so many people have near miss stories.

I'm working my way backwards through the interviews. Anyway, I landed on the one from The Face 1997 last night and Jarvis elaborates on the incident in detail in that. Really creepy, there was another child in the van when he got in and I agree with him if he didn't react in the way he did that could've ended up very different. Reading these interviews, '97 - '98 Jarvis needs a break. Not in a good place. I mean I know that from TIH but reading the interviews is even more revealing. Bless him.

I think Nick's being a bit unfair here. We've all seen that photo of Russell with his top off, and he was a bit of alright...
