Ahead of the upcoming Pulp shows this summer, I've been listening to old recordings, watching YouTube videos, and listening to FEELINGCALLEDLIVE bootlegs...

Listening to Auto 2002, a few things hit me. 

First: Lipgloss is really good, perhaps the best they'd ever played it (as a young Pulp fan I'll admit I'm not the best source, but I've not heard a superior live version yet...). It sounds like Hawley on lead guitar - the tone is great, the slight messiness and variation on the original, absolutely superb. The whole song has such a great energy, there's some wonderful piano thrown in there, it's magnificent. Babies is also truly joyous, though of this era I think I'd plump for the Eden Sessions performance, you can see their retooling of an old favourite really move the crowd.

Secondly, Common People. The last song in what they may well have thought to be their last ever gig - and they throw absolutely everything at it, my word. The krautrock version works so well here, it's such a glorious soundscape, soaring and smashing everything in its path - and my god, Jarvis treats the words like it's the last time, too, he absolutely tears into it. The whole band drops out when the grease won't come out in the bath, and then - "You will NEVER understand" - a huge sonic boom, shredding ears and middle-class pretensions alike. Jesus christ. Then it all falls away after another chorus, and Steve's bass leads the band into the final rallying cry. Absolutely masterful, it's so easy to gush about it.

Does anyone have any particular performances they'd like to rave about? From the last reunion, I think - of those that are on YouTube in high quality - the ones I tend to return to are This is Hardcore at the Royal Albert Hall, and Sunrise at Reading - they're both so good.

Feeling Called Love, Leeds 2000. Mark does something on the guitar during the "Oh Yeah!s" that is utterly breathtaking. He never did it before or again. Every time I hear i get goosebumps. Also there is chord sequence from the bridge of Sorted at Route de La Rock which is a pure delight.

Also any performance of the Fear with that epic call-and-response between Mark and Hawley is *Chef's Kiss*

There is a performance of Disco 2000 at Lorelei where the levels are all over the shop but you can clearly hear Candida's keyboard on the chorus and makes me feel really fuzzy inside.

Interesting topic.

FEELINGCALLEDLOVE - when I first heard this on the album I was concerned that they wouldn't be able to play it well live. However, they managed to put in decent live performances in 1995/6 but when I saw them in Edinburgh in 2000, they actually managed to improve on perfection. At first, I thought it was a new song but then realised what it actually was.

The Fear - Glastonbury or Finsbury 1998. Fantastic opening song.

Seductive Barry - any version. The longer version is fantastic but I'd say it's more suited to smaller concerts than festival stages.

I Spy - Jools Holland 1996 with the orchestra

Sunrise and I Love Life - I think the 2000 versions are better than the 2001 versions (even if "I Love Life" was obviously unfinished) and the final recorded versions

Common People - Glastonbury 1995. This has historical significance and should be listened to with Jarvis' (full) intro for context

I also liked the way "OU" merged into "Lipgloss" in 1994 (see "Fiction Romance")

Live Bed Show - V96. This is the version that contains the lengthy outro and extra verse

Interesting to see Feeling Called Love being praised for its feeling (called) live as the first thing that came to my mind was the performance of it at Glasto'98. Jarvis' vocals are so on point, and the band are a tour de force.

I'd argue Pink Glove on Hit the North (they had just finished the lyrics for the most part), although low quality, I love the long intro! The whole session goes on repeat for me.

The recording of She's a Lady and OU on Sound City at the Leadmill in 1993 will always have my heart, and Auto had a better Happy Endings and Lipgloss than their actual period that they were written and played.

I always enjoyed Common People being played right after Glory Days, so I'd vote for Glastonbury 1998 for that one, although the lack of Russell is damning.

FEELINGCALLEDLOVE - Leeds 2000 - I love the drop out in the chorus.

Auto version of Lipgloss - totally agree that Hawley rocking it up has put the tune on another level.

Common People - Glasto 1995 is hard to beat but Brixton 1995 was epic. The drop out & huge "all in" on the krautrock version circa 2000- 2002 gives me goosebumps every time.

Babies - Glasto 95 Russell's slightly distorded lead guitar riffs... love it!

Live Bed Show - extended 1996 - probably the Huxley's new world, Berlin recording.

Bar Itaila 1996 - i really like the striped back version

Countdown reunion tour. The keyboards are great!

Do You Remember The First Time - reunion tour... That intro man!!! with the whole net curtain dropping. The best opener ever!

Mile End - 1996... banging!

Pink Glove - Glasto 1995 again. I love the wah guitar

Minnie Timperly & I Love Life - Leeds 2000. Just somethong about them - i think the bass is louder (maybe). I was there & clearly remember the torrential rain that began during Minnie that, if anything just added to the atmosphere! (An all emersive experience if you like?!)

Sheffield: Sex City - Sheffield 2012... c'mon?!

This Is Hardcore - reunion tour... just bigger & better than before.

Mis-Shapes - anywhere.... i just prefer the unpolished live version.

Party Hard 2001/2 with the speeded up crazy outro

Seductive Barry - Finsbury Park 98 - i love Steve's DJ bits

Monday Morning 95/96 - another banger

I Spy - anywhere .... the live version is just better

Totally agree about Ligploss at Auto, always been my favourite version since first hearing the boot - "we played that one not too bad" says Jarvis, self-effacing as ever!

From around the same time, Do You Remember The First Time? from Jools Holland's Hootenanny at the end of 2002 has always felt very special to me: www.youtube.com/watch

Jarv starts off quite subdued but really grows into the performance, with great energy and some brilliant vocal phrasing towards the very end, with Candida's keys soaring and Hawley adding his usual magic. And, for a long time, it really felt like the last time.

Totally agree about the Hootenanny version of First Time, it gives me goosebumps. Sounds like they're making a real effort to imitate the recorded version of the song, rather than the rock-out version they'd been playing for a few years.

Route one answer, but the No Stilettos rendition of She's A Lady may be the best recorded edition of its live intro. Always nice when Russell's violin is punched up in the mix, for any Pulp song, but there's a really propulsive low-end, too.

Also worth stating the obvious that Acrylic Afternoons reached perfection on the F.E.E.L.I.N.G. video. Not sure if there were any/many overdubs involved, mind.
