Having been lurking past threads, I remembered seeing someone say that the last reunion would've been a good time to release a two-disc collection of Pulp's greatest songs from their discography.
Supposing that were to happen now, what would you pick? Which songs would you choose or leave off, and how would you split them between the two discs?
Here would be my list. I've decided that, rather than having a singles disc and a B-sides disc, or a list of songs in chronological order, I'd pick 35 tracks and then split them in order between discs, so that each one gives you a taste of Pulp's chronology. It's a bit of a fudge, but I'm hoping it creates a good spread. This format needn't be followed unless you really want to.
Here was my pick.
DISC 1 My Lighthouse - My Legendary Girlfriend - Razzmatazz - Acrylic Afternoons - She's A Lady - Do You Remember the First Time? - Common People - Underwear - Something Changed - Sorted for Es and Wizz - Mile End - Party Hard - Help the Aged - Glory Days - The Trees - Wickerman - After You
DISC 2 I Want You - Countdown - O.U. (Gone, Gone) - Joyriders - Lipgloss - Babies - Pink Glove - Mis-Shapes - I Spy - Disco 2000 - F.E.E.L.I.N.G.C.A.L.L.E.D.L.O.V.E - The Fear - This is Hardcore - A Little Soul - Like a Friend - Bad Cover Version - Sunrise
I really feel like Sheffield: Sex City should be on there, but I'm not sure what I'd remove to allow for it given that you pretty much need all the singles. It's either Joyriders (recognisable live staple) or She's A Lady (fan favourite that Jarvis has revived). Also Dishes and Sylvia.
A new Pulp compilation is overdue. It seems that every other 90s band has had more than one.
Misshapes, Mile End, Like A Friend and After You need to be added to the Hits tracklisting (maybe OU too) and Underwear and Miners Strike removed.
I agree, that those songs should absolutely be there.
Although I think Underwear belongs too, it's a live favourite (and on Spotify it's more listened-to than both Sorted and Mis-Shapes! not that Spotify listens count for much)
A compilation is entirely overdue - Hits has gone platinum and now that there's a reunion, putting one it sounds like a good idea. Blur did more than one, for example. Adding some live tracks (like Common People at Glastonbury, My Legendary Girlfriend from Party Clowns, some Peel Sessions, Babies at Reading) would be a nice bonus.
It's the sort of thing that would probably be more marketable if the first disc concentrated on the hits and the second disc on deeper cuts. So I'd go for:
Disc 1:
Do You Remember the First Time?
Babies
Common People
Disco 2000
My Legendary Girlfriend
Death II
Mishapes
Sorted
Razzamatazz
Happy Endings
Pink Glove
Seconds
Live On
I Spy
Underwear
Bar Italia
Weeds
Sunrise
Disc 2:
FEELING CALLED LOVE
Mile End
Deep Fried in Kelvin
David's Last Summer
My Lighthouse
Looking for Life
Mark of the Devil
It's a Dirty World
The Fear
This Is Harcore
Cocaine Socialism
Countdown
Styloroc
Sheffield Sex City
Seconds
Last Day of the Miners Strike
After You
Wickerman
CD1 - hits and radio friendly songs
Glory Days / Common People / Countdown / Disco 2000 / Party Hard / Like a Friend / Underwear / Pink Glove / Lipgloss / Razzmatazz / Live Bed Show / Mis-Shapes / Sorted for E's and Wizz / After You / Something Changed / Sylvia / Sunrise
CD2 - darker and longer songs
The Fear / Deep Fried in Kelvin / I Spy / FEELINGCALLEDLOVE / Sheffield: Sex City / Wickerman / It's a Dirty World / This is Hardcore / The Professional / Seductive Barry / My Legendary Girlfriend / Death II / Dogs are Everywhere / Don't You Want Me Anymore? / His 'n' Hers / The Day After the Revolution
A pity pre-1992 material can never co-exist with the Island songs.
I wonder have Pulp ever tried to buy their back catalogues from Fire and Island (Universal) and then license it to a label who would look to reissue everything, exploiting their rights and give us what we want!

I think that Fire and Island would be able to come to some sort of arrangement to issue a compilation featuring songs from both. An acoustic version of "Dogs Are Everywhere" was a B-side to "Common People" and "Mark of the Devil" was on the "Hits" DVD so it's certainly possible. I'm guessing that, due to the number of Fire reissues/compilations that have been released over the years, Island have never seen any value in releasing something jointly with them.
I may be wrong but I think that the band/labels would have, surely, by now made their money back on everything besides "We Love Life". It wouldn't cost much to get some super-deluxe reissues out and given the fact that people currently seem to be talking about Pulp more now than any time since, say, 2002, I think that there would be a market for it. Easy money if you ask me.

I do feel that Separations would receive a bit of a reappraisal if it were promoted more today. It's aged remarkably well.

I'm very out of touch with what's getting physically released and what sells these days - are bands still making 'best of' albums for physical release?
