As a bit of light relief from the very sad recent news... here's a video of Sheffield band The Detail playing at Dolebusters festival in 1986:
Fast forward to 1m 59s and you'll see a few blurry seconds of a feller in a short sleeved shirt playing keyboards. That, my friends, is Captain Sleep (known to his mother as Terry), a few months before he very briefly joined Pulp.
I've still not found out anything else about him (not even a surname), but may be getting closer after all these years...
EDIT: I've now been told (by someone who should know) that this isn't him, and he never played in The Detail. More news as we get it...

There was actually a copy of this one in there when I went to look - didn't realise the significance at the time, I was just mad that the 1985 one with Pulp was nowhere to be seen!

Supposedly they did, but they're not on the VHS - it's only got about half a dozen bands on it.
Seems like the Captain's only on the first number in The Detail's set. I think someone might've told me at some point that he wasn't really a full member of that band, he'd just jam with them sometimes? Something like that anyway. Or maybe he just fell asleep...

So the story here is ... I was told years ago by two people (independently) who were there at the time that Captain Sleep was also a (part time?) member of The Detail and his real name was Terry. I showed one of these people the video yesterday and he confirmed the guy playing keyboards on the first song there was our man. Hence the post here.
However I've also recently made contact with a member of The Detail who is adamant that there was never a Terry in the band and that the keyboard player in the video was someone else altogether who definitely never played in Pulp.
Both sides can't be right, and it seems logical to take the word of someone who was actually in The Detail when it comes to who was or wasn't playing in his own band. However that doesn't account for the alternative version which seems to have been told to me in good faith by two independent sources.
Investigations are ongoing....
