Was the reason ever established for the version of "Cocaine Socialism" that featured as a B-side to "A Little Soul" not being the "proper" version?

I vaguely remember someone saying in 2006 when the proper version surfaced that they may have tapered it down in fear of the B-side being better than the A-side. I can't see this myself, if that was the case they could have just chosen a better A-side. Did someone just make a mistake and choose the wrong version from the master tape?

There's not a massive difference. The B-side version doesn't have the female backing vocals and the horns are a bit different

You know what...I didnt even realise there was an alternate version. Just a thought, I havent got any headphones handy to check - but is the version on "them" tapes we purchased the same as the released version on ALS?

The version on the auction tapes, called 'Northern Souls - Mix 4', is closer to the 'Proper Version' released on the Deluxe Edition CD... though the CD version fades out a little bit too early, and misses the final seconds of the long fade-out and thumping noise.
