Posted by a guy on one of the Pulp Facebook groups, this is pretty cool - Jarvis sitting in for indie DJ stalwart Gary Crowley, in early April 1995. All the snippets between the songs. There's plenty of Sheff attitude and none of the mannered tones he adopted for his 6 Music shows/modern-day interviews:

The Demo Clash part is particularly good! A nod to the Different Class recording sessions too.

Thanks for posting this. Enjoyable listen. I've become so used to 'modern day' Jarvis that I had forgotten the slightly different intonations and less polished approach from those times.

Also, I should know this - but what was the song that was played by 'MUSH'? I can't quite place it.

The Pulp one? Sickly Grin.

I didn't recognise the Blur one. Wonderful Sometimes, the "Pigskin" (Suede) song, was a winner on one of the show's genuine Demo Clashes in 1990. For a few weeks straight, I think. First proper exposure they got.

More radio gold two months later uploaded by the same user. Chris Evan's annoying schtick yields some interesting revelations. Misshapes is in the midst of being written and Sturdy's first Pulp gig in that big park in Leeds is slagged off by Jarvis (the city, moreso than the gig). Getting the call to headline Glastonbury is still a pie in the sky suggestion...

And again from the same uploader, an excerpt from that time Jarvis read some Ian McEwan on t'radio in 1994...

Definite shades of Inside Susan meets Wickerman in this...

Heh, that's great. Wonder if I heard it on the school bus at the time? That's what I associate most with Chris Evans and Common People on the radio. I can't remember it. Almost as if 26 years have passed...

So this must be the time when he's staying at Saskia's in the runup to demoing all those Different Class songs. The comments about Leeds obviously are from a Sheffield rivalry sort of perspective, but I can sort of get where he's coming from. I live in Leeds now but my memories of it from visiting as a kid in the 80s/early 90s are of it being a bit of a grotty intimidating sort of place. Still, Sheffield!

I was thinking when listening to those clips how writing Truth And Beauty now would be soooo much easier in terms of secondary resources available.

Dredging through phone directories in vain pursuit of ex-Pulp associates and pouring over micro-film newspaper archives at Sheffield library...you must shake your head in wonder!

Quite right. All that legwork surely makes the discoveries all the sweeter.
