Here is mine

Jarvis Cocker debut = Further Complications = Room 29 < Beyond the Pale ( > Relaxed Muscle).

I'm sorry to say, although a very strong effort that i enjoy very much, BTP is not up the other 3 records. It's like a good EP or something. Feels incomplete still.

I think it's much better than Further Complications, which has too many samey generic rock songs (Angela, Fuckingsong, Caucasian Blues...) and one song I can't stand (Leftovers). Room29 deserves more than two listens. I think it's my favourite record of the four. They're all solid seven to seven point fives, kind of like We Love Life.

 

 

The last (only?) consistently excellent Jarvis album is the one everyone knows. I don't think everything was perfect in 1995 and not so at other times. Just that the others are hampered by bad song choice or production/arrangement. Frustratingly, most of those records had better era songs which were omitted from the final tracklistings.

 

That sounds like the opinion of an uber-anorak who always finds fault with something he loves due to some deep psychological self-loathing complex so I try to take the records as they are and enjoy them thusly, honest !!

Room 29 is such an adventure. When the project was announced i was really skeptical but they really managed to make some kind of movie-record, dont know how to describe it, like a little journey into this hotel and you can really feel the hotel atmosphere, like a portal into another dimension. Hotels, especially in the US, are really disconnected to the rest of the world, a bit like if time was suspended, it's like a bubble, i think Jarvis really managed to describe that. And it's so musically inventive with just a piano.

Further Complications is another thing, i get why most Pulp fans dont like it. It's dirty, raw, and comes more from anger rather than love/lost lost and brain (like in Pulp records). It's unlike any other record he's made, but as a rock n roll record it's like 100% perfect.

Great song. All my favourites on that album are the atypical ones. I also love Discosong and I Never Said I Was Deep.

I'll give Room 29 another chance as I really struggled with it.

Id also Put them in this order- the saxophone in FC really turned me off, theres some great tunes are there though, favourites have to be discosong (one of my favourite solo songs along with sometimes I am pharaoh) and I never said I was deep. Ive not really given Room 29 a chance, I played it through once and I wasnt keen, so Ill have to give it another listen at some point

Room 29 < Beyond the Pale = The Jarvis Cocker Record < Further Complications

I really prize Room 29. FC had some great tracks but a little too much filler for me. I don't dislike any of the albums, they all get a work out from time to time. My liking of BTP might in part be due to its relative novelty, but it's still on high rotation and is sustaining interest.

It was exciting when 'Jarvis' first came out, eh? What a wait that seemed to be. The Roundhouse gig was so good

Beyond The Pale is his best record ever, including the ones with Pulp. It's catchy, it's dark and it hasn't got a filler. I rate them as follows:

BTP > FC > TJCR > R29
