My mind might be playing tricks on me here but I remember having a CDR years ago of an acoustic French radio session (presumably from 1994) where Pulp played the songs that would end up as b-sides to "Common People" as well as acoustic versions of "Acrylic Afternoons", "Do You Remember the First Time?" and possibly "Babies". I can't find any mention of it in any discographies so am I just imagining this? I'll have a look for the CDR but if anyone else has a copy I would appreciate an upload.

They did a bunch of acoustic things in 1994. Dogs Are Everywhere and Joyriders were done for a GLR session, not sure where Razzmatazz came from.

It wasn't unheard of in those days for bands to do sort of fake radio sessions where they'd show up and do the interview as if they were playing the songs live on air, but actually they'd be precorded tracks that they'd brought in. I don't know but that might be the case with these. It would explain why there's no GLR credit on the Common People CD.

How come Island were able to release a version of Dogs Are Everywhere? At that stage was there a suggestion that Fire would be happy to license Pulp material in such events where Pulp/the major label they were signed to, wanted access to old Pulp recordings to flesh-out b-sides/reissues etc.?
Seems odd that it's the only time it happened.

I think you sent me a copy of that back in the day, and I think it's an audience recording not a radio session. So different performances to the single tracks. I think.

I'm not sure Fire would have needed to give permission for a new recording of Dogs, Eamonn. Not an expert on music copyright but I suspect they'd just have had to pay for the publishing rights to the song. The recording they used was obviously from 1994 so they wouldn't have had any claim over that side of things. And Fire would have been nuts to say no to a cut of the royalties on a number 2 chart single!

That sounds correct. I have a box of CDRs somewhere in my shed so I will do my best to dig it out as it will be interesting to hear again. Unless someone else wishes to upload a copy...

 True...although Fire weren't to know how big it would be when permission was granted. I wonder just how much Pulp's success propped-up Fire's income in the deal made to extricate the group from the label.

Also, assuming you're correct on the publishing thing, it's a pity that Pulp didn't do any "new and improved" versions of 80's material once they became big, for other radio sessions or b-sides etc. The odd song (She's Dead/Anorexic Beauty etc.) did get rare live outings, I guess.

Imagine someone said to Jarvis in 1986 while recording Freaks on a shoestring that in about ten years you'll be pissing away a grand a day in recording studio fees for months at a time!

Don't forget - there were songs on the "Hits" DVD that were originally released by Fire ("Mark of the Devil" and a bit of "Death goes to the Disco" if I remember rightly). I'm guessing the same happened here.

There's another instore acoustic set listed as recorded in Sheffield or Manchester from the same time.
Anyone know for certain which is the correct location?
My copy says Sheffield but the wiki says it's more likely to be Manchester..

 I vaguely remember that being Picadilly records in Manchester, but I could have the wrong shop or the wrong year or both confuse
