I remember not bothering to get a ticket cos I went to see what I was led to believe would be The Boomtown Rats last ever gig in Dublin on the premise that Pulp would almost certainly play more dates in 2013 and beyond...
... and this weekend I was back in Dublin watching The Boomtown Rats again.
Funny how things turn out.
Still at least I saw Pulp three times at Brixton, Hyde Park and The Royal Albert Hall, the last being quite possibly the greatest gig I ever saw.
Interesting about shared experiences being so different! I thought the RAH gig was a big let down after Brixton. Which Brixtojnnight did you go to Btw? I think the second was the better.

First night at Brixton, so I can't comment on second night. It was superb, but not quite as good as Albert Hall for me. I do have a small pang of regret not getting a ticket for the second night at Brixton, but as it was I had just got back from the US and was still pretty jet lagged, so not sure I could have managed a second night. I must admit I was a bit concerned the tickets wouldn't be in the post when I returned, but fortunately they were there.
There was a great sense of occasion at the Albert Hall, and Cat's Eyes as support was far better than Baxter Dury. Also my wife came along which is quite rare, and she really enjoyed it (best gig she's ever seen as well, though she has seen fewer). We also had very good stalls seats, which is why she went, cos she refuses tp be in the melee and i don't want to sit in the circle. All in all, for me, it was just far more memorable and enjoyable. I can't think of any gig by any act I enjoyed more, even going back to the early/mid nineties days of Pulp at The Garage, Theatre Royal and The Forum.

I am amazed that since Sheffield that apart from the boat gig and the Jonathan Ross show they have done no live appearances in three years. I thought that after After You, they would either make an LP or alternatively do a few festivals appearances or even a proper headline tour, but all there was was a movie.
Can't believe I repeated words twice in a sentence!
David Bowie has been more prolific in the last three years...
(Which is nonetheless a good thing)
He sure has been. A qualified good thing though as I haven't liked that much post Scary Monsters. I only listened to The Next Day once so maybe I should dig it out again and give it a proper hearing once I fire up my new phone. My old one corrupts everything except a copy of Brothers by The Black Keys which somehow has stayed there and is for the most part all I have listened to on the daily commute in the last couple of months.
I preferred second night at Brixton, largely for the setlist. On the first night the unique songs were OU, Seen Her Lately, Bad Cover Version and Underwear, but on the second night they included The Fear, Sheffield Sex City and Live Bed Show. Also Russell played on Wickerman on the second night, but not the first. His part was gorgeous.
We only had seated tickets for the second Brixton night, but having seen the first we (actually my better half) had an unsavoury encounter with a tout who took both our tickets plus a fair wodge of cash. But it was worth it...especially during SSC when Jarvis came down into the audience and we got to touch him a bit.
I also much preferred Baxter Dury as support than Cat's Eyes, but it takes all types, doesn't it? :)
I likewise think the reunion shows were some of the best they played - I saw them four times in their "heyday" but only once with Russell, but they were as nothing compared to the Brixton nights, or Glastonbury 2011. I think RAH gig was probably better than the original ones, too. Just not as good as those three I've mentioned. It was fun hearing My Lighthouse, but I'd have much rather heard a 'better' song. I think the balance between obscure for obscure's sake vs. 'this is actually a good song' should be maintained a little better, i.e. with OU or SSC...
PS ArrGee re: Bowie, give 'Blackstar' at least a listen. And a watch. It might be amazing and it might be dreadful. I'm really not sure yet.

I listened to Blackstar (the song). It is very interesting. More amazing than dreadful.
I wonder if it's representative of the whole album? It seems to think it's a touch more outre than it really is, but sat alongside the right material it could really work.
Bowie will return to the stage before Pulp do.
Luke Skywalker will fall to the darkside and be redeemed by his daughter before Pulp record a new album. [You heard it here first, although you probably didn't. There's nothing new under the (twin) sun(s).]
Next Pulp prediction: This Is Hardcore 20th anniv live album tour with a string section in 2018.
Before that a Jarvis solo album (with Steve) in the next 18 months with tour.

I'd happily settle for that. If we were bartering I'd try and wrangle an additional single out of them for Christmas '16. Another rerecording of an early unreleased track. Or a remastered, fully worked-up version of Cuckoo/The Quiet Revolution/etc.
(And its surprise success, together with promising receipts from the Hardcore tour, would inevitably lead to the We Love Life anniversary reissue we've all been waiting for)
Mind, they say the past must die for the future to be born...

No chance of Bowie ever doing his own show, but he may appear on a stage somewhere. I suspect Jarvis will do another Prom in 2016, but zero chance of Pulp playing in 2016. Maybe 2017. Or 2018.

Let's hope something like this will happen, although i'm not too keen of the After You reworked version. It lost the bittersweet taste of the demo. Sounded like a club remix.
Really hoping for new material next year, we need some new Jarvis or Pulp music. It's been almost 7 years since the last. Way too long, time flies too fast.

In retrospect, Hardcore was hot on the heels of Different Class, only a 30 month wait! Must be time for the Relaxed Muscle follow up.
I suspect Jarvis ran out of tunes, something called writer's block. A musician never spends that many year without doing any music, release something. Pulp reunion doesn't count. Can't say it wasn't a nice treat, but a musician needs to release new stuff, otherwise he slowly dies.
I would even be ok for some kinda Pulp record with old stuff properly recorded, with a tracklisting like that, even though we've not heard a few.
1. Got to Have Love 2. Darren 3. We Can Dance Again 4. After You 5. The Quiet Revolution 6. Street Operator 7. Can I Have My Balls Back, Please? 8. You Are the One 9. Catcliffe Shakedown 10. Everybody Loves the Underdog 11. Cuckoo Song
I mean, what a record...

Not sure he has writer's block as he's hardly prolific (or just plain lazy).
Apart from a period from 1992-1995 where Pulp did about three albums worth of material (Intro, His n Hers, Different Class + B sides) the history of Jarvis has been massive gaps between recording albums.
It 1982
Freaks 1986 (along with a few singles)
Separations 1989
Hardcore 1997
We Love Life 2001
Relaxed Muscle 2003
Jarvis 2006
Further Complications 2009
Even now at the arse end of 2015, at worst he seems to have just skipped one album release whilst touring with Pulp (2011-2013) and various other activities. I'd be surprised if he doesn't record something he's written (Pulp/Solo/Relaxed Muscle/other) in the next couple of years.
Let's hope you're right :) 2016 would be great, there's a new Divine Comedy record coming out and a Kula Shaker as well, how about a joint tour ? hehe keep dreaming right.
I think Jarvis is too old for Relaxed Muscle. It'll ever be Pulp or a solo album, or nothing. Most probably the latter.

And a new Bowie LP and Suede as well. Will be very retro next year. Bowie, Pulp and Suede on the same bill would probably get me over to Hyde Park.

If Stuart Goddard can get away with being Adam Ant in his sixties, then I see no reason why Darren Spooner can't rise from the grave.

Yeah but Jarvis was already out of breath jumping around with Pulp in 2012, so in 2016 with Relaxed Muscle... That would be a very very old skeleton :D
Unless that skeleton started jogging in the past months

I guess most skeletons are pretty old. Not sure he wore the skeleton suit when he recorded A Heavy Nite with, but it's nice to think he did!
He did perform as Relaxed Muscle as recently as 2012 in New York. Personally, I'd love to see a Relaxed Muscle gig more so than a Jarvis solo gig which I did do once.

I just hope Darren Spooner doesn't have a beard these days.
