During the question period after todays screening of the film, Florian said something rather interesting.

In talking about the band agreeing to do the film, he said (almost word for word....) "They (the band) said that we would have to do this quickly as we are playing a show in Sheffield in 8 weeks and it may be our last'

I fixated on 'may be our last'

That's right. Sheffield wasn't their last show, they did the Coachella boat after Sheffield.

Yes, but in the context of Sheffield.

You are aware this concert took place 18 months ago, right?!

Yes, never mind all that, what about a review of the film, voxpop? You are one of the few common people to have seen it.

I went to this as well. That woman doing the Q&A was unbearable.

I thought the film was a bit, I don't know, boring. The concert footage was so great, that I just found myself wanting more of it. There was just a lot of people on benches.

I think it really would be a shame if they decided not to release the whole concert footage at some point.

It seems to be mixed better than anything I've seen. And Jarvis' voice sounds really strong. I can't imagine they would have the coverage they have and not plan to release it somehow.

I'm hoping for a 2 disc special edition blu ray or summat.

When I've heard them say things of this nature, it generally comes across in the very vague "never say never" sense rather than suggesting any actual plans. But it is very easy to fixate on words or nuances of tone, I definitely got quite excited the other week about a "secret gig" that turned out to be a DJ set as I would never think of using the word gig for that, but these things don't generally stand up to the levels of extreme literary analysis we want them to, unfortunately.

I have to say, I've given up all hope of more Pulp since watching the trailer.

I've said all along that until Jarvis says it's the end, it's not the end. The tall skinny man has sung.

I actually enjoyed the film. I didnt have any expectation of it, but I did wish there was actually more of the interviews of the fans. The interviews were very interesting.

The concert footage was great, but Im not sure we needed more of it in the context of the film. It should be released as a stand alone. It seemed like the right amount seeing as the film was about the city and the fans, not the show.

And even though Russell was not part of the concert, I wish he had been included. I always assumed Russell the most 'sheffield' of them all.

Overall, it was great!

If Melinda from Altanta is one of you, she gets lots of screen time. She does seem lovely.

I think it's daft for anyone to say for sure that this is the end of Pulp. They had a really successful reunion, and Sheffield was the end of a really amazing tour, after which they're going off to do their own thing again, and have no further plans. There is nothing to say that they're not going to get together again, in some form, in 5 or 10 years. No-one invents arbitrary rules for their lives. If they decide that Pulp should play some gigs again, that's what they'll do. What it does mean is that there's not gonna be an album, but then that was never likely to begin with.

It's nothing to get upset about- I wouldn't want them to be touring perpetually without doing new material, and being a full time band with recording and releasing and promotion schedules etc obviously isn't appealing to them anymore, which is understandable. I imagine that touring an album is somewhat more gruelling than basically just having your pick of music festivals to play. And I guess personally I've kinda had my fill of Pulp over the last couple of years anyway, and I'm more interested to see what Jarvis does next in terms of his solo material than I am in seeing him hump a speaker stack during another performance of This Is Hardcore. But then again, I have had the privilege of attending five Pulp gigs since the reunion- if I hadn't had the chance to see them I imagine I'd be pretty gutted that they might never tour again.

I think that Jarvis saying "I think it was good that we left Sheffield til last, it gives the story a happy ending" is pretty conclusive to be honest. I'm not saying that I want Pulp to be a full time thing, but I still think it's pretty sad when the person who said never say never actually says it's the end.

To me it seemed like he was talking about the 18 months of the reunion, it seems very un-Jarvis to say "this is 100% the end of Pulp forever".

Morning Jarvgirl and Calumlynn

I've just read your posts and must say I agree with you both! I think Jarvis is always a bit opaque or ambiguous in the things he says (both accidentally and on purpose), and, as ever, his words can be interpreted in different ways. Like Jarvgirl, I initially interpreted "it gives the story a happy ending" to mean the whole PULP story - i.e. from Jarvis learning a few chords on the guitar and practising singing in his bedroom as a teenager, all the way through their eventual escape from Sheffield and triumph as a band, through good times and bad, with the reunion as a marvellous coda to it all and the film as a final full-stop.

I think there is some quotation of John Lennon's about the breakup of the Beatles, where he likens them to the children in a family leaving mum and dad and making their own way in the world, and as regards Pulp, I can see that after all these years, now that they have their own, full lives, it would be difficult say, "Yes, let's be a proper creative band making albums again", because that requires so much of you and there are now other dependents to think of.

However, if Calumlynn is right and Jarvis just means that the film is a happy ending to merely this chunk of the PULP story, i.e., the reunion, then I am very happy - and knowing Jarvis, he probably doesn't even know himself. I think he plays life by ear.

Agree with pretty much all of this, and what Panther said.

After You was a quite a tease in what they might do next but ultimately it was best to take it for what it was - a nice Xmas pressie (they could, as they said, have just got us socks after all). Jarvis and Steve working on another solo seems the likeliest next move and that's still quite exciting.

Regarding live shows, Pulp are probably the only group I would struggle to tire of seeing live, playing largely the same set, mainly due to Jarvis' stagecraft but also because so many of their songs, even the hits, sound even better live than on record.

Perhaps if they re-convened again at some point the 'play an album live in its entirety' thing which has been popular among legacy acts in recent years would be a welcome variation for the band too along with the associated b-sides (leaving DC out, as nearly everything from that gets played at most shows anyway). They clearly got a blast out of giving Like A Friend a new lease of life and must have wanted to give the song His'n'Hers more airings.

The thing is, there is a good chance than they will never play again. They just might not get round to it, or never really feel like it again. But it just seems weird that, after what, 34 years as a band, and with all the false starts and minor successes and potential break ups etc etc, that they'd now just say that there will never under any circumstances be another Pulp gig. Bands only usually say that if they really hate each other, or haven't kept in touch. Like it's pretty much 100% sure that The Smiths will never perform again, for example! But Pulp have remained reasonably close, and while they may never feel the urge to tour again, what's to say that there won't be some sort of event that brings them together again, whether that be a sudden need to raise money or in order to stand up for a particular political issue. I reckon Pulp are too clever to say that it's all over forever.

I agree with this, album shows with b-sides would be amazing!

I'm not really sure why people think Pulp won't play again.  I'm a bit surprised that there hasn't been anything for 18 months, but given the film is coming out it's possible other things will follow.  The original Hyde Park announcement came out of the blue, and likewise the 2012 dates.  I did expect something else to be recorded or at least re-released in the wake of After You.  Pulp just seem to be slow at doing stuff.  Always have been.
