One of my friend's told me that there was an article in yesterday's Times by Bob Stanley called Pop School - 20 Best Pop Bands and that Pulp came in at no. 13. Hurrah!
The write-up for Pulp was as follows:
While Oasis and Blur squared up for the battle of Britpop - North versus South, working class versus middle class - Pulp sneaked in with their tales of wood chip, art school dalliances, and ended up as the nation's favourites. Their lyrics rebranded their home town as Sheffield: Sex City, reminded the media that working class people did sometimes go to college, and documented the rave scene (Sorted for E's and Wizz) from a gentle distance. Jarvis Cocker - a cross between Serge Gainsbourg and Jake Thackray - was the unlikeliest and most intriguing pin-up of the '90s.
Best line: 'Take your Year in Provence and shove it right up your arse' (sic).
